I remember AVGN saying something like "if you have one baseball game why do you need to have so many others?" when talking about more variety of sports titles on Genesis vs. SNES. Sports games were arguably one category where the Genesis never was surpassed by the SNES. I had an SNES back in the day and used to really enjoy Madden 94 and NHL 94 (which was one of my favorite games of the era). Years later when I got into collecting and got the Genesis versions of these games, it was quite apparent that they were superior on that platform. The scrolling was smoother, the action faster and the higher resolution graphics really helped with the small players and numbers/letters. These days when I get an urge to play some NHL 94 I automatically go to the Genesis. Great video, by the way!!

NBA Live was a huge step up for EA's basketball, the stuff before was kind of dreadful, their "vs" games are the kind of 16-bit sports games that need to be avoided and forgotten while games in this video get discovered in bargain bins as hidden gems. My roommate got really into NBA Live 99 on PS1 the same year I got NBA 2K on Dreamcast so we kind of got sucked into battling franchises. NFL Football 94 was the last real new title that I played with my dad back in the day. He decided that games were a little too complicated once the 32-bit generation came around. So I've definitely got some deep rooted nostalgia for Sports Talk 93, as we played both that and 94. WWF Royal Rumble might be my most played game with my friends on the Genesis. It was the closest we could get to the button mashing fun of Wrestlefest, while having fresh enough rosters to feel somewhat current to what we'd see on TV. World Series Baseball was likely my most played solo sports title on the Genesis. I was super into baseball back then, and having the real teams, players, and stadiums represented was welcome, along with a fun game engine under the hood. I think Evander Holyfield Real Deal Boxing was the catalyst for my getting a Genesis. A friend of mine rented it, and the graphics and presentation were an absolute game changer for me.

I'd pick Madden '92 for football primarily because of the ambulance and also because I found the weather, particularly the snow, "pretty". I think it's also the only Madden gave I've ever played to this day. I'd also like to mention World Series Baseball since I grew up in the Montreal area and it was the first baseball game that I ever played that let me play as the Expos in Olympic Stadium, instead of just a generic stadium as seen in Sports Talk Baseball (which had the MLBPA license but not the Major League Baseball license, so it had the players but no logos or real world stadiums). The sports game I played the most on the Genesis was NHL '94, even though I never really followed hockey much in real life, since it's a fun pick-up-and-play title and the first NHL game to have both the real team names and the names of the players in the same game (plus some synthesized versions of the authentic organ music tunes played in certain arenas like "Here Come the Hawks" for the Chicago Blackhawks).

International Superstar Soccer (which was later renamed to Pro Evolution Soccer) was truly one of the greats, and the Nintendo 64 game (ISS64) was on a level with Mario 64 or Turok on the "This console is awesome!".
@drunkensailor1123 жыл бұрын
It wasn't renamed pro Evo. It was always iss until the game failed with both iss games on gamecube. Pro Evo by that time was already a different and new football game made by a different studio.

@@drunkensailor112 Good call, I stand corrected since I thought that ISS was the western title for Winning Eleven, but it was Jikkyō Soccer. Though International Superstar Soccer Pro on the PS1 is indeed a Winning Eleven/Pro Evo game - that's a confusing lineage.

Definitely all hockey games NHL94, 95, 96, 97 and 98. I liked NBA Jam also.

Dying to hear your top 10 Super Nintendo sports games! Thank you for doing this: the sports genre was so important back in the day, and they don't get the attention they deserve from historians.

You should've played Coach K basketball that was the best basketball on Sega Genesis simulation wise

I was hoping to see Pat Riley Basketball in some capacity. Glad to see it made it at the very end. Those close up angles of the action were so cool. It might not have been the best basketball game, but it was the one I played the most.

@@elel. I was disappointed with it after 96. They took out all the unlockable players, made it harder to play defense, and I just didn't like the gameplay as much.

@@supersanic1254 it has more arcade gameplay, I prefer 97 and then 98.

No Mutant League Football or Mutant League Hockey!? What is this list!? Heh joking aside, I love those games, but you've got some great choices here. Royal Rumble was immense at the time. Great video.

I will admit, I too was shocked to not see either of the Mutant League games on here. They were the single best Sports games I played as a kid.

I love sports games, especially in that era. I have at least one of baseball, basketball, football, futbol and hockey on my Genesis. NFL Football '94 is one of my favorites, and I'm a latino guy that loves futbol above any other sport. WWF games were great too, at a time when the actual product was decent. And ISS Deluxe, I got it in Chile bootlegged (I did not know that was the case back then), and even though it's not as good as the SNES version, I still played the crap out of it.

how dare you!, i am so butt hurt you left out my favorites lol, good list, I actually prefer NHL 93 just for the fact anyone has a fighting chance with the left right goals compared to 94 if the other person controlled the goalie better than you they had an advantage. and I enjoyed NFL 95 me and a friend of mine put serious time in it and it's still fun to this day. Sports games on genesis were heads and tails above what the SNES offered.

NHL 93 or NHL 94 is going to be #1 on most Genesis sports game lists so I think it's cool SLX did his own thing. The Montana games are underrated so he has a cool #1.

My personal favourite is NBA Live 96, closely followed by Sensible Soccer. When I discovered as a kid, fooling around with a friend on the player editor, you can unlock legends like Abdul-Jabbar, Dr J, Larry Bird... it was pure magic. I remember even checking the Guinness World Records book looking for the greatest players (we didn't know that much about NBA back then in Europe). I played ISS Deluxe quite a lot also, but on the SNES, what a fantastic game regarding if you like the sport or not.
