Coleco Vision and MSX used the Texas Instruments TMS9918 graphics chip (there were several slightly different variants that output composite video or chroma/luma video at different refresh rates but they were all the same from a programming/capabilities standpoint) Sound was similar in capability but different chips, Coleco Visoion used a Texas Instruments SN76489A and MSX used a General Instruments AY-3-8910 (both were 3 channel square wave based sound chips). MSX 2 used a Yamaha V9938 graphics chip which was an enhanced TMS 9918 with additional features and graphics modes. The Sega SG-1000 also used the TMS9918 family and the Mark 3 / Master System VDP was an enhanced version of this chip family (which like the V9938 was made by Yamaha) . In addition the Genesis VDP was a 16-bit extension of the Mark III / Master System graphics chip (it supported all of the Master System graphics modes which was used for Master system compatibility) which makes the Genesis distantly related to the Coleco Vision and MSX.

There were also some Famicom ports to/from this system of eventually hugely popular games. The MSX version of the original Final Fantasy was unchanged in gameplay afaik (unlike any other system ports), but it had an expanded color palette and probably better sound, given the superior MSX hardware. And of course as others have mentioned, Metal Gear got its start on this machine, with the Famicom version expanding the early game but truncating the ending. Finally, MSX hosted the only canon version of Metal Gear 2, with NES Snake's Revenge having a separate production team.

I'm wodering if you can plug in a Sega Genesis/Mega Drive controller in the MSX? From what I saw the controller ports on both systems are the same. Which will make sense since you can plug a Genesis controller into Atari 2600.

My favourite system (especially as all of my games were released on it back in the day :)). So much variety in titles, plus titles from major publishers that only came out for it. So many franchises started on it before any other system as well.

Man...I thought Mark was back. Talking about the PlayStation Pro and PS5. This is where Metal Gear started and was ripped apart for the Nes. We wouldn't get the real version of the first Metal Gear in its entirety and Metal Gear 2 in its real form until the mid 2000's. I always wanted to mess with one of these especially for Metal Gear way back when.

I didn't play a lot of cartridge based MSX games as I kid, but some tape based games I highly recommend are Manic Miner, Jet Set Willy, Hunchback, Sorcery and River Raid. None of these were exclusive to the MSX but IMO they're the best versions as a lot of the bugs were ironed out and the music was a giant leap forward when compared to the Spectrum, for example.

Yes but on a rare occasion you might run into a compatibility issue. I only ever experienced this once though with a tape based game called Jet Set Willy II. It ran fine on a Sanyo MSX I had laying around but not on my preferred system which was a Toshiba HX-10. It would crash and reset the system at a certain point in the game.

Ah, Scart. Though... I suspect the Japanese devices actually output something else. (JIS-21 was it?) point is, same connector, different pinout. That might not be a big deal in the US, but in Europe, where SCART is ubiquitous, it could mean destroying your TV. (in theory. In practice probably just the SCART port itself.) ugh. I miss having a SCART capable TV. I had one in the UK, but shipping a 30 kg CRT television halfway across the world is just too impractical. The worst part is that TV probably ended up on the dump, because nobody wants it. It's great for collectors of gaming systems, but those are few and far between. Now, Australia is a bit tricky. We got a LOT of televisions that only have composite connectors, but we also used to get a lot of stuff advertised as having a 'EURO' connector. What IS a EURO connector? Why, SCART of course... I wish I could find a SCART capable TV, but on the other hand, I've seen a SCART to VGA converter go for about $50. And while that still sounds like a problem because most monitors can't handle 15 khz signals, it was also a scan doubler. Once you have a VGA signal that at least meets the 30 khz signal spec, your options open up considerably. A large number of monitors still support VGA as an input, and VGA to HDMI converters are relatively easy to get (and cheap) Recording video from VGA is a different matter. The only device I've found that can do that is the really expensive x-capture1, which is the video capture device from the same company that makes the frame-meister. In theory it can capture 15 khz, so you only need Scart to VGA conversion without scan doubling, but in practice getting 15 khz capture working is difficult, and requires using older drivers... Still, if playing games is all you want, nothing beats having a late 90's European CRT television for practicality. If you had say, a 1998 UK Panasonic model, like I did, then you have a TV that supports: - Composite video - RF Video (I bought a mega drive recently and that was all it came with. Go figure) - Composite over SCART (for devices that do that, or for plugging in more composite devices using an adapter, which is what most European Nintendo systems came with. I still have such a converter from my Wii) - RGB over SCART (the holy grail for older consoles) - standard PAL support - PAL 60 support (for newer consoles that support PAL at 60 fps) - NTSC support. In other words, it supports pretty much anything you can throw at it aside from HD stuff like Component or HDMI, or computer standards like VGA, DVI etc. Wow I miss having that television to hand... But you just can't ship a 21 inch CRT television 17000 km... It's expensive, and it'd probably break along the way.
@frankschneider61567 жыл бұрын
Pardon my question, but why don't you simply buy a scart adapter ?
