I played Myst with my dad when I was very little. We played it pretending we were archaeologists discovering the worlds, taking notes and drawing diagrams in a big leatherbound notebook. We didn't use any walkthroughs. We really got into it and the same with its sequels,. One of the best video game experiences of my entire life, the designers must have been literal geniuses

My dad got me a Sega Saturn and Myst was among the games he chose. Needless to say, even after 20 years, I still haven't been able to figure out the game. But I still have the console and the game still works (which is weird because all the other games I had have all broken down and deteriorated).

Seems like everyone I run into these days has never heard of Myst and it makes me sad. It was once literally everywhere, and now the only people who know about it are mostly in our 30s or older. For like 7 bucks you kids can get it on your phones so at least give it a try. Also try Riven.

Myst was amazing and I didn't find it to be that hard either. However, its sequel Riven was quite difficult and it was the first game where I caved in and consulted a walkthrough to complete it. I still regret that decision because I've always believed walkthroughs ruin the experience, especially for puzzle games. There have actually been five games in the main Myst series, though only the first two and were made by the same developer, and some side games like Uru (also by the original developer). I've only played the first three but of those I found the third (Exile) to be the easiest. If you're looking for a more casual experience that's the one I would recommend.

I remember having no idea what to do when I played this (I was 8). Watching this also reminded me of similar Sega Saturn game where you had towalk around in an organic looking alien tunnell/spaceship and avoid monsters. I can't think of the name for the life of me... does anybody know what it could be? The game was also made up of pre-rendered graphics.

Thanks so much for sending this gem to CGR. I owned it for the Saturn back in '95 and beat it without help, just took a bit. It got me hooked on the whole Myst series. I about wet myself when I saw this on here, so many good memories of when gaming was fun and creative. BTW this game came out in '93 for the Mac, not the Win PC, that wasn't until '95 when the ports came. And this game isn't hard once you know what your doing, Now Riven and Uru, those can make your head hurt. Nathan.

Myst is one of those adventure games that requires a notebook and pen, and you have to scribble down EVERYTHING. I'm very thankful that there were no internet cheat guides in 1995; I strongly suspect most gamers today would immediately run for the cheat book. But such players would completely miss out on the experience. The puzzles aren't impossible once you figure out the logic. Highly recommended.

The funny thing is that the game mechanics were archaic even when it was released, this was the Quake/Unreal/Crysis of the era. That is to say, this was a big graphics demo which got packaged with almost every home computer back in the day, thus the high sales.

If ever there was a game deservant if the term 'classic', it's Myst. Probably not the best game ever made, but imo certainly the greatest ... but only because Riven didn't precede it but was it's sequel. I'm ecstatic to see this game again, here in the classic game room.

I think I was in third grade when this came out, and my uncle got it for me for Christmas or something. I remember clicking away on our Quantex PC, pencil and paper in hand, taking notes about what the tower was telling me. I'm pretty sure my little third-grader brain couldn't handle a couple of the puzzles and I went over to my friend's house because he had internet and a printer, and I most likely cheated a little bit, but I still got the satisfaction of getting stuck in a bad ending.

This was one of those killer games I always wanted to play but missed during its time. In retrospect, I don't think I would have enjoyed it. Still, I might pick up realMyst. It was a real-time version of Myst, with actual 3D graphics and free-roaming. That sounds more like a Myst I would like. I've heard it's out for the iPad as well, with improved graphics. Pity I don't have an iPad.

I've heard that this is the best console version of Myst released. If you played this on the PlayStation, the game's footage and audio sounded horribly compressed and the aspect ratio is inferior.

Myst, to me, is what Snow White was to animation. It gave the medium artistic cred not seen before. Don't get me wrong, there were great storytelling experiences before Myst like Final Fantasy IV for instance, but this kind of cerebral experience had never been seen. Also like Snow White, how much it holds up is based on opinion, but it's impact is undeniable. Get the version on GOG.com if you want it. It costs 4 bucks and is optimized for all modern Windows systems. It's never too late.
