Part 2 of 2. Classic Game Room reviews THE REVENGE OF SHINOBI for the Sega Genesis 16-bit video game system by Sega released in 1989. The Sega Genesis game console (aka the Mega Drive Megadrive) is CGR's favorite gaming system, and it's no surprise that Revenge of Shinobi is one of our favorite games. This two parters looks at this amazing side scrolling action game and what sets it apart from the rest. What we need is more 2d two dimentional side scrollers on game systems like the Playstation 3 PS3 and Xbox 360 and Wii. Although some platformers and 2 D side scrollers have hit Xbox Live Arcade XBLA we want brand new ones that combine old school action with martial arts mayhem, great stories, fun gameplay and characters. In this video we talk about the different software versions and revisions of Shinobi, version 1.00, 1.01 and 1.02. This game is famous for its end bosses (end boss levels) with Spider Man, Batman and Godzilla. Spiderman was kept in all three versions, but Bat Man was removed in 1.01, and later Godzilla was also removed from version 1.02.

One of my all-time favorite games! The music was great. I used two important tricks to make it through without using a 'continue'. #1 - you can set your throwing stars to 'unlimited'. Go to 'options' and put it to zero... and wait. It will turn into an infinity symbol. #2 - at the beginning of the factory level, there is a 2-up. Jump and spin, throwing stars. you will hit the 2-up. jump down and get it. You will die, but you will be +1 life. repeat a few dozen times...

Two mornings ago, I beat Revenge of Shinobi on Normal Difficulty without dying ONCE! Yes, you have to be absolutely mental to do this. There are some Pixel-perfect jumps in the game and proper positioning that you need to be aware of. I was shakin' at Godzilla. I only used the 'Ninjutsu of Mijin' (suicide at the cost of a life, to refill your health bar and damage the enemy) once and it was on Godzilla. At the end, I even had 9 lives. It was unbelievable, because the game leaves a high probability for death. My record was: 2 deaths and I would mostly have at least 4-6 deaths during my playthroughs on Normal. Now I really like RoS.

On a side note: I found that if you grab an extra life, then die immediately afterwards, you gain ~two~ lives. So, in essence, it was like you never died and you got the 1up. The extra life would also respawn when you restarted the level, so you could use that "technique" as many times as you wanted. :-P

In terms of action, Shinobi III takes a dump on this. But this game looks quite impressive and innovative. The level design seems more thought out.

Lo and behold Sega did bring back the Mega Drive in HDMI, just with the wrong Shinobi game. Revenge of Shinobi really is one of the best games ever. It's a real shame the series rarely comes up in the greatest of all time lists

Man I remember owning the original copy of this game when I was a kid which had the Spiderman/ Batman boss it wasn't until replaying the game recently that I realized they have removed and re-skinned the bosses for the digital download, I really wish I still had my old copy of the original game as it was such a let down to reach that part of the game only to see a pink spiderman and Manbat. Really cool retrospective review guys. :)

One of my favorite game of ALL TIME! This game alone made owning a Genesis great. To me, this IS the best game on the Genesis...even later games couldn't touch this game. The graphics, design, gameplay, depth, replay, sounds, and MUSIC......are the BEST...even rivaling the best SNES has to offer. This game is still very underrated to this day...which piss me off.

I was never a big fan of this Shinobi but I loved the Shinobi 3. I didn't even know Godzilla, Batman, and SpiderMan were in the game...lmao. I'm going to have to see what version I have now. How do you know what version is what? Besides you know getting to the levels?

Godzilla hasn't really been replaced, they just ripped of all his skin and made his atomic breath the more appropriate blue colour.

wow, I was unaware that I had a later release of ROS. And he was mistaken I apparently have the 3rd release, because I fight a giant skeleton t rex instead of Godzilla, and my copy is for geneses

Actually yes it will be playable in HD 720P and look right. All the games will be playable in this mode. I would imagine the games will look a little better than the original carts.

...I've noticed that almost EVERY enemy in this game is a robot. I think only human was the girl in China town...she's the only one doesn't explode when you defeat her.

I own both the original and the 6pak versions. The original with Batman is just WOW first you fight Spiderman then Batman!!!! Name one other game that has bosses from 2 totally companies together, especially 2 ICONIC characters as those.

that power up that makes you jump higher doesn't help in the stage 7 level with the big waves... you still only jump as far left and right as normal... i only found this out a few years back! lol

Make no mistake: this is one of the finest Genesis/MegaDrive games. While debate rages on whether S3 or ROS is better even to today(see my page for details), you absolutely have to have this game in your collection.

Interestingly enough, Super Hang-On also had a revision at the time, that got rid of the Morobare signs along with Bridalstone I believe... It also plays differently. But they went with the original version.

Yeah, Shinobi did come out for the PS2 as did a pseudo-sequel "Nightshade". But they were panned for being far too hard. Theres also a remake of Revenge of Shinobi on th eGBA, but apparently its terrible.

@DippShits well, first off i consider Strider and Gunstar Heroes to be the best games on the genesis, but that is just my opinion. i have used the infinite shurukins cheat, but i have not used summersaul shuruken. i do beat the boss, but i lose a bunch of lives in the process and die later on, as i said the games difficulty curve is ridiculous, and i have gotten to the last boss in Ninja Gaiden so i do not just suck. this is to the games disadvantage, but again, that is just me.

Mark, if you love this game so much, why haven't you reviewed Shinobi III? IMO, S3 is the best of the series, and I have them all, including Shinobi on Saturn. But Shinobi III was the best!

You're so right about the end levels of this game. The ramp up was functionally retarded how hard it got, but honestly..looking back, I wouldn't have had it any other way. One thing that still irks me to this day was my inability to beat the game without the POW on me. The end boss presented two options: really really easy or discombobulatingly hard. Having the POW powerup so you had the long hard hitting sword made all the difference.

you can tell about what version you have playing until level 3 the flamethrower enemy look a lot like rambo in the rev 0 if they are bald you have the 1, also batman only appear in the 0 as well, but devilman is also great XD at last most rev 0 copy are japanese only

That's it, I'm convinced, I need Marknobi! Mark and Godzilla team up against Batman, Spiderman, and Zeed. Marknobi has to rescue his father Shinobi for the Sega 32X/CD. Utilize the CD for the sound and the 32X for extra levels of parallax scrolling and sorite rotation.

I am so glad I have this game. I bought it off eBay for $55. Seller didn't know about the different revisions. I got lucky AF! It is version 1.00 with Rambo, Dark blue Spiderman (the web goes behind shinobi, instead of covering him) and Batman. Probably won't get that lucky ever again. 😢

I played and loved the arcade games in the mid-late 80s. I had my first taste on my friends Japanese mega drive in 1990. He let me borrow his mega drive and 3 games Strider, ghouls n ghost and super shinobi. From then on I'm certain to be a Sega man for life. (SEGA = ARCADES) All 3 were amazing but super shinobi was the one game that nearly made me shred a tear (if u fail to defeat neo zeed in time to save your girlfriend) lol! Fucking awesome game!! The best game on the mega drive.... Arhhh those memories!

I agree with you on seeing some new 2D games. But not in Pixel graphics but in high quolity 2D artwork. So that the end product would be kind of like playing an anime cartoon. Crisp and clear but without the limitations of actual set video.

Shinobi is awesome. I've played some of games from this series. Shinobi on PS2 was brutal hard, too much for me. Kunoichi was better in my mind. Sadly I lost this game. Shinobi 3DS is great. One of my favorite 3DS games I have. Hopefully Shinobi series continues in the future. Now when we are going to get Shinobi VS Ninja Gaiden? Now THAT would be super cool game to have. Or make a movie Shinobi VS Ninja Gaiden.

One little thing that may help... At the begining, go to options, select 00 shurikens, wait a few seconds and the 00 turns into the infinity symbol And you will ALWAYS have 999 shurikens. Infinite! :-D And the life bar increases at IIRC 20,000 50,000 and every 50,000 after that.

If you look closely, there is a small animation that happens when you defeat the female enemies on the china town level that suggests Joe actually shoots the strap holding their dress on, causing it to fall off. That's why they end up sitting on the ground with their arms crossed to cover themselves :)

I used to think this game was incredibly difficult back in the day but PS2 Shinobi is a whole other level of nightmarish. The last boss kicked the crap out of me 100 times. Shinobi III is a very pretty game but it feels a little easy compared to Revenge. It's still really good but not as good as this.

This was one of my favorite games as a kid. Genesis games just had a very strange feel and design to them. I completely agree with the appeal of 2-D games and how the 3-D remakes of old 8 and 16-bit gems have been bastardized and just lost the greatness of what they were. I've applied to Bandai to ask if I can take a shot at doing a 2-D redesign of Monster Party from the NES.. Another weird game that has a ton of potential on new systems if given the proper treatment. Great review.

that's what i use to say before i actualy played shinobi for the ps2.i refused to play it when it first came out.i said "oh,onother 3d rip off.if it's not 2d ,i will not play it." but i was wrong.shinobi ps2 is what a 3d shinobi should be. i gladly accept it as a final shinobi title.i trust sega with evry thing they do.aldo it's 3d, they realy managed to keep the gameplay of a 2d game so fresh. thank you sega,and thank you joe musashi.

Agreed. Both the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo have games that make them great systems. Everyone will lean a certain way when it comes to the topic of which is better, but I don't think it is an argument that can be won. They are both amazing in their own way. Neither system will disappoint you. And in the end isn't that what matters?

I don't know if Godzilla teaming up with Shinobi would be such a good idea. It reminds me of the Star-Wars games. Where Darth Vador teamed with the main character. While it might sound like a good idea in theory. This just brought down the average age of those playing the game.
