Classic Game Room reviews HEAVY NOVA for the Sega Genesis video game system from 1991. This game puts the 16-bit Mega Drive through a painful experience as a killer robot warrior fights through a space station in this science fiction video game. It's a side scroller scrolling action game in 2d 2-d two dimensions, two dimentional. You pilot your cyborg machine bot, which they call a heavy doll (sounds kind of like some Blade Runner outtake to me) and encounter various enemies which you must destroy. This bizarre game is not very much fun nor does it have award winning gameplay, graphics or next gen sound. It's interesting and probably will not make it to the PS3, Playstation 3, Wii or Xbox 360 Live Arcade.... that's for sure. Here's a game for the garbage dumb bargain bin.

I had this game. It was pretty terrible, but I did actually get to the point where I could control it with general predictability. I had to finish every game. I didn't have a large selection of games I owned so probably through pure brute will I have finished this game many times.

This game was all about timing and proximity. There were a lot of moves that came after each level. Yes. Each levels' gameplay was a little short and corny, but during the battles with other bots, if you bothered to read the book, you could perform these moves. In my opinion, if a person could become proficient at this game, it represented the amount of adaptation to timing a person could achieve... even if it was a little lame.

This game was the First game I bought for Genesis... and Honestly, I thought it was amazing back then... The Graphic were by far the best the system had to offer, along with the sheer size of the robots, completely exploded my mind... I was used to playing games like River City Ransom, where graphics were sacrificed for gameplay... Finally, I got a SEGA, and I think I got this game for $29 and My sister Bought Klax for $9... but the Graphics were just so good... The controls... not so much.

I love this and black hole assault as a kid, but as someone else pointed out, it's not like there was a lot of competition. And for the time/day/age, these games looked amazing. Hell, watching you play it now I was like "those animations are borderline beautiful".

the soundtrack on the mega cd was awesome for '91... I had it on cassete to listen in my walkman while mountain biking lol I was 14 and loved even the grainy fmv's lol

I had this game as a kid, and I remember a lot of the moves, etc. Whether or not you threw the opponent or just kicked or punched them depended on how close you were to him. For example, standing close and pressing B performed a double arm throw, but there were other moves you could do using this principle. I'm just going to be nitpicky, because I've seen this on another review of this game, which I actually liked as a kid (my brother and I played this a lot), but if you had the manual, it explains what DOLL is: Defensive, Offensive, Lethal Liberator.

this game reminds me of Cyborg Justice, also if you watch Gundam Wing then the term "Doll" used to refer to a robot doesn't sound so strange, in Gundam wing they had giant unmanned robots called mobile Dolls.

Just an FYI, no offense or anything, I think the review was spot on: if you read the manual that comes with the game (which since you got it on ebay you probably didn't have) it tells you what DOLL stands for: Defensive Offensive Lethal Liberator.

I enjoyed this review of yours. You get the impression that this game was not finished yet but rushed to production and release. In Japanese it is difficult to hear the difference between a the 'b' and 'v' sound, hence the error. But the proofreader should have seen these errrors.

i remember renting this when i was like 12. i dont remember playing the single player but the 2 player fighting seemed to entertain me and my brothers for alittle while. never could figure out how to do "abilities". like you said it seemed to happen at random. after being bored and pissed at it we would just pop sonic 2 back in or something. i might download the rom or something just to check it out again.

I kinda liked this game back in the day. I think the controls weren't as bad as some B-grade games once u got used to the flight ability (better control in air than on foot) and the few fighting moves.

Has anyone ever played the first Lego Star Wars for the DS? Now that was a game that was truly incomplete. The glitches and bugs in that game were so bad that in some areas of the game... You could not progress any further!!! Ghostbusters for the DS was another really bad game! I really liked the review!

According to the back of the box you're trying to become the "Heavy Nova" the deadliest warrior in the universe. Hell, even the manual isn't really finished. Whoever designed it was very sloppy at his job. But there are some cool hand drawn versions of the DOLLs in the book.

Heavy Nova itself is not a bad game, it is the controls that suck. If the controls would have been more responsive, this game would have been a hit. And yes, this game does have a sequal, it is called Blackhole assult for sega cd.

I used to rent this game from time to time for sega genesis from blockbuster. Now the game had a great concept, still does. It lacked controls, this is what killed it. Perhaps if they were more responsive it would be ok. This is by far not the worst game on earth, another sega genesis game actually beats Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing. This game was known as Cyber-Cop there is zero direction, zero way to know what you are doing, try it out, you will lose interest in 3 minutes.

The worst part isn't the controls, you can adapt to it and work around the clunky system. The problem is the game has nothing to offer, the platforming is about absolutely nothing, what you see on the first stage is basically the same on the final stage. The fighting portion is at least better than the platforming, but after 30 years of Street Fighter 2 reinventing fighting games, it's like asking a smartphone owner to make a phone call using a Morse code tapper

I know this all too well. I played the game when I was 7. Ithought this game is going to be good but it turned out to be the biggest mother load of shit I have played a long time ago. The graphics are very good ahead of its time and intro was inspiring when will Micronet learn that GRAPHICS QUALITY DOES NOT A GOOD GAME MAKE! The controls are cyptic. No wonder I lose in the boss stages!
