My hometown is (was) Lackawanna, N,Y. on the very east shore of Lake Erie. My uncle (mother's brother) worked on the lake ships so we would visit him when his ship docked at the Buffalo harbor. My mother's family was from the Detroit area. When we visit Buffalo in the summer, we go to the Welland Canal to see the ships in action.

Awesome footage with the drone and high def video. So much nicer that what we could do just 30 or so years ago when I started doing a bit of photog on the lake boats. I can only wish we could get in a time machine and capture scenes from 50 - 75 - 100 - 125 - 150 years ago with todays equipment. But the mute button was the first thing I reached for.

What was the reasoning for putting the bridge and crew accomodations so far forward on the older ore boats?

The Classic Lake Freighters have the best Design (Pilot House Forward, Engine Cabins Aft). Also, I especially like the ones with the Small Pilot House, like the one on 1:15.

Do the Great Lakes have a US navy presence on them? Are there navy ships are the great lakes?
@Counterpoint1951 Жыл бұрын
From what I've read, yes, there are U.S. Navy ships on the Great Lakes, but they are used for training sailors, not defense. The U.S. Coast Guard is responsible for protecting the Great Lakes from illegal activities like smuggling and terrorism. They also assist with search and rescue operations.

Just when I thought I'd forgotten about it, the John Leitch shows up again... I'd like to know what they were smokin when they thought that design would be a good idea, that boat takes the prize for ugliest on the lakes
