I made them today and they came out perfect. I tripled the recipe because I need at least 35 buns for my son’s school. I’m bringing them tomorrow. Wish me luck so everyone likes them as much as I did. Thank you Jemma. From now on this will be my go to recipe for sure.

Omg jemma. This is the easiest and delicious hot cross bun to make and I made this today for 90 people at work (I am a healthcare worker) and they loved so much and I will make this again on Easter Sunday thank you so much

They're pretty common in Canada around Easter. I used to work in a grocery store bakery and one time I forgot to add the crosses before putting them in the oven.... we called them "non-denominational spring time rolls".

You could have put the cross with icing. That's is what most bakeries do in my country.

In the UK we would call that a tea cake.

I made this for my family but I only used raisins in them because they were the only dried fruit I had to mix in on hand. And we loved it so so so much! Thank you Jemma!

The recorder really is an underrated skill that takes us through adulthood. Many times in my life, crisis has been averted by a few quick blasts of hot cross buns on the recorder!

"Hot Cross buns, hot Cross buns One a penny two a penny hot Cross buns" would sing it along as a child while Ma made them and I would nibble on the raisins and sultanas. I personally have never made them but this time around I am going to give it a go.

Just followed this - my god, it took me from 3pm through until 8pm to finally get one toasted and loaded with butter, but to my complete surprise, it was amazing! Thank you for making the recipe into such a fun video to follow and honestly, as someone who follows recipes to bake pretty standard cakes about twice a year, this worked perfectly. It’s definitely a “trust the process” job 😅 Happy Easter! 🐣

Tasted amazing! I substituted water with slightly lesser than 300 ml warm milk and soaked raisins in orange juice for a week ! Thank you :)

I love the extra cinnamon too! I do something not quite traditional, for the cross i use lemon curd or thick raspberry filling. sometimes we eat them with red plum jam. this year I went nuts an made abunch gave some to friends. We still had a bunch left an I made french toast with them, so yummy.

Hot cross buns have been apart of SRI LANKA which was once called Ceylon. Yes indeed a very British bun . My father loves tea buns and I’m definitely making some for him .thank you for sharing your recipe.

If you ever want to switch active dry yeast out for instant yeast...just take a bit of the liquid in the recipe, warm it very slightly (or just make sure its room temperature, at least) and mix the yeast into that. Wait until its activated and pour it in with the rest of the liquid.

I love hot cross buns simply my fav thing at easter due to the time that i'm watching this (2020) we are currently stuck inside luckily we have all these ingredients might not be able to buy them but this recipe is 10x better.

So I tried these for the first time and they came out amazing! I made some alterations for convenience and taste: used plain flour (didn't want to go shopping :P ), milk instead of water (cause why not), replaced raisins with a mix of dark chocolate chips and dried cranberries just to try something different (I highly recommend you try - great combo), skipped the cross (lazy, it's not easter) and brushed with butter before baking. Very happy with my results :) Will make these again, possibly in a few weeks. Butter is a must, even though I skipped the toasting (didn't want to burn the chocolate).

I just looked through a bunch of hot cross bun videos on youtube and this is by far the best. I live abroad and can't buy them so i'm making my own. tried your recipe on friday, I've got another batch about to go in now

absolutely love this recipe - I followed it to a T and the buns turned out perfectly. The only thing I would change for next time is by making half of the amount of dough for the cross so that I dont have an excess amount of leftovers :))

I've heard of hot cross buns because my husband is English, but before we met I had no idea they existed. I do like hot cross buns, but I prefer the Norwegian sweet buns with cardamom and raisins.

In the Caribbean we actually make the crosses out of icing and put it after the buns cool 🤤🤤

Hot cross buns are definitely a thing here in Australia. You can buy them from Boxing Day and at some places all year round. But it's very hard to find them with peel anymore as that stuff ruins a great bun. The 'traditional' Australian hot cross buns have sultanas and rasins, but come in a multitude of flavours, chocolate is especially popular. My mum usually makes them from scratch every Easter. They're the best part of Easter, hot out of the oven with lashings of butter 🤤

Jemma I love this recipe as it seems less dense than others and I’ll be making them on Easter Friday. I wondered if you might consider not using plastic for covering the dough as it’s just as effective to use a damp cloth and much more environmentally friendly.

I tried this recipe today and loved the smell of the 'Hot Cross Buns' that filled our home this time of the Year! They were soft and yet a little dense with a deliciously spiced and fruity flavor. Have a Great Easter Weekend everyone eating these fluffy buns! Stayhome and Staysafe!

Made these this week and my partner ate 5 in less than 3 hours! 🤣🤣🤣 used golden syrup moxed with a little maple syrup to glaze as i had no apricot jam! Yummy

Thank you!! I’m from the UK but live over the pond now. They don’t sell traditional hot cross buns here. They have a sugary version with an iced cross. It’s just not the same. I’m going to try making these.

Thank you Jemma for explaining the procedure so well , I've been following a recipe from someone else but he didn't explain how long it takes the dough to mix together in the mixer or how sticky it would be . I didn't mix it for long enough and the stickiness threw me off . Needless to say it is not working out for me I can't get the yeast to prove . I'm definitely going to follow you're recipe next time. I've always found you're recipes o work out perfectly .

I usually use white chocolate and dried cranberries. That’s generally more acceptable among my family haha though it’s not traditional.
