Classic Military Watch Inspired Perfection & The Best Microbrand Automatic Diver - NTH Näcken Review

Today I review a watch I bought last year on a whim. After borrowing one from my good friend and industry legend John Kiel, I was instantly hooked. As I am sure a lot of my viewers know, I have owned countless Tudor, Omega and Rolex dive watches over the years, so when I was introduced to the NTH Näcken line, I instantly understood this was no ordinary homage, but a tribute to an entire era of classic military dive watches.
With a big crown of a 1954 Rolex Submariner, the dial of a Marine Nationale Tudor Submariner 9411 or 9014, and the case like the previously reviewed 60s Omega Seamaster 300 166.0324, it has been tastefully brought bang up to date with modern materials and a quality that secures its dominance as one of, if not the best micro brand, military inspired, automatic 300m dive watches. In addition, its modest price of just over $600 can’t be beat.
So, today I dive in (forgive the pun!) and take a look with a full review, including what I like and don't about this super fun watch that set the record on its release of being the thinest 300m microbrand diver.

I've had my Nacken Modern Blue for 7-8 months and absolutely love it. Great quality and wears very well in my rotation. Sure, it's not of a Tudor Black Bay quality, my recent Black Bay Black in-house is 'outstanding' in the quality and feel, but for $500 (pre-order price) vs. $3k+ you're getting a stylish and good looking diver that wears well whether with jeans and tee, or slacks and shirt. Great review TGV!

This model has the date buried under the dial? You can still set it by the crown but it remains invisible because is covered? I see that is 9015, there is another model of this movement without date that you were using?

For whatever it's worth, the bracelet does taper, from 20mm at the lugs to 18mm at the clasp. It's not straight, but of course it doesn't have the more dramatic 20mm-16mm taper some bracelets have, which is more noticeable. In our view, our steel bezel inserts are a better material choice than ceramic or sapphire, which are more scratch-resistant, but also more brittle, and can be cracked or shattered, unlike steel. If a steel bezel is damaged, it's much easier to replace than a ceramic or sapphire insert, which may require an entirely new bezel assembly, not just the insert. Our bezels are PVD/DLC coated with the highest thickness coverage, for maximum long-term durability. They hold up very well to all sorts of abuse. We've used expansion clasps on other models, but they're thick - 7mm, and expensive, whereas the focus for the NTH Subs was on thinness, as well as affordability.

I have several ceramic insert watches with pretty light wear and I have fractures in a couple of them. I prefer a SS insert anymore. As for the extension clasp...no thanks. Clunky and unnecessary for 99.9% of the time you wear the watch. I realize I run the risk of sounding like a fan boy, but there isn’t anything I can think of that I want different on any of the models. Fit and finish is spot on, and quality is there. The rest is looks, like it or ya don’t. I hope most people know what they like before a purchase. I could say I wish they were less expensive, but I think that the level of quality represents a fair price. The cardholder is cool and useful....but here lies my complaint, I want an NTH decal.

Hi TGV! I started watching your channel a couple of months ago and you really changed my life in terms of enjoying the finer things in life. I do like listening to classical music once in a while and of course stepped up my watch game immensely. I went from fashion watches (DW, Boss, Armani) to a Seiko 5 on a Bond Nato and just recently a blue Omega Seamaster 300m with the ceramic bezel and Im absolutely chuffed to bits, Im over the moon! ;-) Next up is a classy Rolex but Im unsure which one to go for. Im thinking Datejust (Blue or Gold) or Oyster Perpetual. Thank you very very much for your amazing content, you have a really inspiring personality. Best Regards from Austria! Kimo

Excellent review as always! Wonderful watch, wish I could own them all but 6 is the limit! I did purchase my first "microbrand" watch a few months ago...the Ginault Ocean Rover (killer homage!) It is a really fun market segment and the NTH is an excellent example of the fun that the microbrands bring to the table! Bravo!

Every product Chris Vail makes is not only of high technical quality but is exceptionally well thought-out in terms of design *and* performance. It's amazing the value you get with his pieces. At the time this watch was made I believe it was -- and maybe still is? -- the thinnest 300m-rated dive watch on the market. At any price level. That's typical for him: find a way to contribute to the market of enthusiasts, and then over-deliver.

Great review TGV! I appreciate the construction of this model and the concept of one watch encompassing a whole time period! I own a Tudor Black Bay, 79220B. The snowflake hands were one of the reasons I fell in love with my Tudor! Surprisingly, critics may knock the snowflake hands on the NTH, I find it flattering that the Tudor hands were selected to be used on this watch. I do agree, Chris should have done some engraving on the case back, it would look more complete!

Another fantastic video, thanks Tristano! Sometimes I feel it’s a shame so little people are into horology. All your effort and great observations could be enjoyed by many more of us. On the other side to me there’s a sort of romance to a passion like horology being as small as it is, it keeps it exclusively to those who really like it. Also, we would not have the utter surprise and joy of meeting a fellow watch geek ‘in the wild’. As you always say, onwards and upwards! Eli

Greeting Governor! I'm happy to share with you two of my most recent watch purchases! I now am the proud owner of the Orient Ray Raven 2 and the Orient Bambino Gen 2, cream dial with blue hands. I will openly say that your video reviews surely helped me commit to my purchases. I have been a long time viewer of yours; however, I am a fairly new collector of "real" watches. This is referring to my endeavor of purchasing non-fashion watches with real movements. As a college student, these two watches strike my budget just right and mark the start to my new collection and I have you to thank. Let the obsession begin! Cheers TGV!

I really enjoy your videos. I tune in all the time. Such attention to detail. I know this is obviously a watch review, but I love the fact that you have a map as the background on your table where you are reviewing these things along with little military figurines and your folding knife. Little things like that make your videos classy, compared to some random other guy doing a review with a plain old table yapping on...I can't believe I'm talking about this of all things, but I thought I'd tell you it's appreciated

A cracken intro as usual TGV, loved it. Love your imagination, great depth . The Nacken is a nod to several respected divers. Knock off? I say not. You speak of your nightly sleep interruptions and checking the time. I would say you explore a nixie clock, a great homage to the 80's and the beautiful nixie tubes. I purchased a nixie watch which I adore amd unique . Great show. Best regards.

Good evening, I am a recently new watch enthusiast (2months in, at the age of 45, already with a collection of 6 Seikos, 2 kinetic GMT's, the other 4 automatics, 1 of which is one just to pull apart and digest the workings of horology), as I am now looking at more detail into watches to add to my collection, I was wondering about the Soprod -V- the ETA movements, as I am finding conflicting advice. Could you possibly help clear up which would be the better, more reliable movement to go for ! ... Thank you in advance.

Excellent review TGV! The cases on the NTH subs are to die for. The steel bezel is outstanding as well. My biggest gripes are the intact date wheel under the no-date dial, and the gimmicky lumed crown. I would prefer to pay a little extra for a Seiko NE15 movement as well.

I just got incredibly lucky and sealed the deal on a barely worn, no date, vintage black Barracuda at 4:30 this morning. The seller is in Australia and had listed it only about an hour before I saw it. Since it had only been up for an hour in the middle of the night, it had no bids so I submitted a very good offer right away and it was accepted within minutes. That timing was just perfect and I cannot wait for it to arrive.

It is a great, stunning diver watch! I think, every diver watch has its own character, even if the certain function requires typical visual elements which should not be modified too much. It means similarity between different divers just because of the same purpose of diving, while the individual character comes through beautifully as well. It means double enjoyment at each of the timepieces, especially if we are able to compare them. Dear Tristano! It is a great new review with tremendous intro and music! P.S: I thought I am the only lad in the World sleeping with wrist watch, lol. :) Thanks, Robert

I'm impressed. Love the slim case, lack of crown guards and a tasteful simple dial with an unobtrusive logo. NTH appear to be doing everything right from what I've seen of their output elsewhere.

Swap the miyota for an ETA or sellita and I'd be sold instantly. Great watch with interesting details, but I feel 600+ is too much for a miyota. Great video as usual TGV.

Very good point, personally I prefer the 9015 in this case. It gives it a slender profile and I have to confess, I am tired of chunky divers, this was a breath of fresh air, otherwise I would normally agree with you! Thank you Ben, glad you enjoyed it Best regards, TGV

Swap the 9015 for an ETA or Sellita and you get 13mm+ thickness (and potential handwind issues with the ETA). A watch is worth much more than what's on the inside - which in this case is a reliable, smooth-sweeping machine.

@@RM-Atticus74 how thick is the glycine combat sub with the ETA 2824-2?
@RM-Atticus74
@RM-Atticus74 5 жыл бұрын
@@JB-fl2gp Lower water resistance makes it an apples to oranges comparison. The 2824 is 4.6mm thick vs the 9015 at 3.9. No way you're squeezing it in a case thinner than the NTH without lowering the WR.

Chris Vail does a great job of designing watches. I feel bad that I don't own any of his creations right now (I've owned 2 in the past). But this year I WILL hunt down an NTH Azores and perhaps even this model Nacken that you've reviewed - that blue is very cool. Thanks for the review Tristano. Ciao, John

John!!! Always brightens my day to hear from you sir. Get the Azores, its stunning and perhaps even more bang per buck. Have you seen the "vintage" version of the Nacky (yes, I have started doing that with the name LOL) Thank you, Best regards, TGV

Great review TGV! I own the NTH Näcken Vintage Black and I totally agree with your review comments on the watch. I own watches that a lot more expensive than this NTH, but I have to say this right at the very top of my favourites as it looks great, has excellent build quality and more importantly, living with the watch is incredibly enjoyable, largely because of it's sizing and design - A real winner!!

I have seen several watches (on your channel and elsewhere) with that green wrist band/strap. I think it looks great and I would like to get a hold of one. May I ask where I might be able to do that? Anyone feel free to answer. And thanks for a great channel

Smashing review video as always TGV! I think I like everything about the watch except for the all white hands, I'd prefer some metal on the edges of them. Also, the case back as you mentioned and the fact that they're produced in China, recently purchased a Armogan Le Mans which I thought was produced in Luxembourg only to find out upon arrival that their produced in China but designed in Luxembourg, that was a huge let down for me personally. All of that side, I gear more toward your side of preferring slimmer profile divers. Quick question, what are your thoughts of the brands; Out of Order (damaged in Italy) and Deep Blue watches?

I got the last blue, non-date that was left on Janis Trading. Just a great watch. Understated, with the great, measured nod to military style and the divers of the 50's and 60's. I generally eschew divers on a leather watch strap but I'm seriously considering either a shark or stingray band.
