This time we look at motorcycles beginning with the letter R. From Rover to Raleigh and a dash of RE in between

It should be remembered that the ACU banned the Rudge Multi from racing at one point because it was considered to have an unfair advantage.

Back in early 1962 I briefly owned a Raleigh RM1 moped. With no clutch and no gears it stalled at every stop and had to be pedalled again to start. As it weighed 84 lbs (38kg) dry and the pedals were very low-geared, this wasn't easy. Add in the fact that there was no suspension, brakes were marginal as was comfort, it's unsurprising that production of the RM1 only lasted a few months. Later versions were better, but they certainly needed to be!

Interesting... The only one of this lot that I ever had was a Royal Enfield. Had two of them (one at a time, not simultaneously), and I still believe they were the best-made of the big British twins, and the only ones I've ever owned that never leaked a drop of oil as delivered. Mind you, you could make a Triumph or Norton oil-tight, but RE did it from the factory so you didn't have to! They did vibrate a bit, but nothing like an old Norton Atlas. The whole bike just screamed "quality". I've not riden any of the new ones, but I have a neighbor who has both a 350 and a 650 and loves them, and swears they always start and get him down the road and home again. Not very quickly, but he's an old fart who doesn't care!

Well on modern roads you can only go so fast I suppose

@@bikerdood1100 Ah, Harry is almost as old as I am...but I'll bet he was a slow bloke in his youth! Fine fellow, though, and machinery is kept spit shined. He's a retired veterinarian and takes care of everybody's furry family members, declining any payment. He's even examined my raccoon and squirrel, neither of which we are supposed to have in NZ. There's a pretty stiff fine for harboring squirrels, which I don't really understand, but he came to me; I didn't import him. God knows where Rocky Raccoonn came from; keeping wildlife off an island nation ain't easy, as they tend to come ashore without asking permission!

On a recent trip to India I came across another R motorbike, the Rajdoot. A 350 two stroke made until the 1960s.

They do love their two strokes over there And who can blame em
