Gotta love a classic fight like this. Both fighters always in range, neither afraid to throw or get hit, and both trying to stop the other guy with each punch. And not to mention the classical boxer vs brawler. I remember watching this live with my Dad. Mayorga was the kind of bad guy that you loved to see. He ALWAYS had good fights. Made up for this unpolished skills with pure bravado and fearlessness.

I feel like his fight against Floyd was even more impressive, albeit not one sided like this. This was the most satisfying "watch a big mouth get owned" fight, for sure.

I remember the promotion for this fight being incredibly effective. They really made Mayorga out to be this disgusting but unstoppable super villain, and questioned whether De La Hoya still had anything left after getting crushed by B-Hop and taking a long hiatus from the sport. Would it be redemption, or would it be the final nail in the coffin for the Golden Boy's illustrious career? I came in legitimately worried about whether De La Hoya would survive the fight, and the tension was real. Ultimately it was little more than a tune-up fight for his eventual bout with Mayweather; when the ref knocked De La Hoya over while trying to save Mayorga, he probably did more damage to Oscar than Mayorga did. But man did the marketing and promotion for this fight make that finish memorable.
@el34glo59 Жыл бұрын
DLH didn't get crushed by Bhop. Yes I'm aware he got a knocked out by a body shot. But DLH was winning alot of those rounds and fought dam smart up to that point. . And that's saying something considering the size of Bhop. Who was also a lifetime middleweight. I'd never count out DLH in any fight

Never forget watching this live. Sweet revenge for Mayorga talking that smack about his wife. The sound of that Left in the first by DLH could he heard from outside the arena. Jesus that was a bomb. No one generated power from short left punches like DLH. At any time you could get knocked cold and he only needed inches. No wind up needed. But on this one, he got all that core torque into it.
