Milkcaps were from old glass milk bottles that were delivered in the USA back when you actually had milkmen come to the house. The bottles had foil caps, in the center of the cap was a cardboard disc... so that's what these came from. They actually had these indentations in them that were there so you could use the v-shaped part to help open the bottle. If you look on ebay, you can find whole vintage caps from the 1950s, etc.

POG stands for Passion Orange Guava, which is a drink that you can buy in Hawai'i (where the game was popularized by Japanese Immigrants) I went to a elementary school in early 2000s that was still playing the game on the north shore of Oahu, many people did not use slammers as they considered them cheating and just hit a basic POG on top of the others to flip them over. Eventually it was banned as it was considered gambling, however you can still buy tubes of the caps at swap-meets all over Hawai'i

The only pog related thing I kept was this one slammer, and it's quite bizarre. Its from an apparently NASA licensed pog set that was given away at Hardee's (a burger chain exclusive to the American south) from 1995 (so, about a year and 6 months after pog's literal relevance to anything) to capitalize on the success of the Tom Hanks movie. I kept it because it was a very nicely minted and heavily detailed coin with the Apollo 13 mission insignia.

I even had a slammer (that's what they called the thing you hit the pogs with) that was shaped like a saw blade. Yes the best pogs were the ones that had licensed characters or movie stuff on them. I had some JP pogs. They even had these weird plastic tubes with caps on the end that you could keep them in. Probably around 1995 I traded them to someone for blue Velcro wallet and a pocket knife. It was 1995 and I was 11. But pogs turned out to be completely worthless.

Pogs was actually a fun game, but what really killed them was the schools banning them because of all the trouble they caused. I had the best slammer on the schoolyard because my dad bought it for me. It's kind of like what happens to Ralphie in My Summer Story, where his dad unwittingly buys him the best top. Anyways, after I got that slammer I owned the schoolyard because of it's unique configuration. It had a stud on the back to make the pogs stick and flip over. It was also both an 8 ball and a Poison slammer in one (The local rules made these 1hks to the stack. Poison was instakill with no slamming required and 8 ball required the flip of at least one pog to collect them all). So I had the best slammer on the yard until someone stole it. Within a week of it being stolen (I confronted the guy and he almost started a fight with me), Pogs were banned and instantly they worthless. In hindsight, it was just a game for bragging rights. No one except for a few cared too much about the designs and if you liked one of the designs then you pretty much played it the least possible.

My school district banned Pokémon cards not long after they debuted (which was the first TCG to really make a splash--the other ones were niche at best, even Magic). The ban was understandable too: A lot of violence broke out as the kids did anything to "catch 'em all," with knife fights, death threats, and rampant theft. Someone spied on me, learning my locker combination, and waited by my locker to open it just because I had a Blastoise. I don't know if POGs were ever banned, but as far as I know, Pokémon was and still is the only card game to be banned in my schol district.

It's nice to see Dan and Nerdcubed doing collabs even after the reboot

Those with the Loony Toons where called Flippo's in the Netherlands, they came in Smiths chips. Some bags had more then one and kids went crazy over them, because they wanted to collect them all. There where also a spinner version, that came a bit later.

I used to have 3 full canisters of POGs when I was a kid. One canister was half full of different slammers. I never really knew anyone else that had them or played, I just liked to collect all the different designs and artwork. There were some really wicked POGs in my collection, but one day they just disappeared. I'm assuming from my mom collecting toys and giving them away/selling them.

I remember me and my cousin getting pogs from the tiny arcade at the bowling alley were my parents and aunt had their bowling league. We never played we just liked collecting the slammers. We had those special tubes for keeping them in full of nothing but slammers. Good times.

In a world of depressing events, I'm glad I can count on Ashens to create entertainment from a small toy.

Pogs were included with some of the 'Playmates' Star Trek Figures. Here's what I did: Open pack; Remove figure, accessories, and base: Throw packaging with Pog attached into recycling bin; Admire figure. That's it.

The weird moment when you realized that almost all the ideas that sells for a fortune started with a cardboard pog.

POG actually stands for "passion orange guava" because those are the juices in it. It's delicious.

Pogs first came about when I was about 6,and then returned briefly when I was about 9. I remember Tazos (the Looney Tunes ones) in packets of Walkers Crisps being so sought after that people would feel up all their packets of crisps in the shop to find the packets with them in, and putting the now-crushed, dud bags back on the shelf). I also remember Tazos being banned from pog matches because they were bloody impossible to flip. I also remember steel "spinner" slammers, which were spiky metal ones designed to pick up speed and flip more Pogs. Also remember them being banned from schools, assumably after taking some small child's face off as we always had our faces inches from the bloody stack! Mine were stolen in the playground and eventually we all moved on to Pokémon cards.

When I was about five I remember my older cousin giving me a huge caramel popcorn bucket (a plastic one with a lid) absolutely full of pogs and a few tazzos. I had no idea what to do with them so I'd just pour them out and organise them into piles of doubles. It was alright if I was very, very bored and couldn't think of any adventures with my Little Ponies.

My god, nearly 30, and I remember carrying around a tube of these and battling other kids on the recess fields at school. Wow, what a flashback! Kids would probably never know what these were now! Now they only really know phone apps.... Haha!
