Loved seeing the old 419 I worked at Thunderbird in 91 they came standard with three 525 horsepower mercruisers and you could upgrade with superchargers on top love the way they sounded when we would test them it's nice to see something that I know I had my hands on looking so good after all these years

Odd. How could you upgrade with superchargers? The 454 525SC's had the B&M blowers on them already. Mercury never offered any upgrades to the 525SC package, or any other engine for that matter in the 90's. Also, from talking to Scott at Formula many times about these, I know they came with a variety of engines back then - there was no "standard". The smallest was a triplet of the 365 hp 454's, i.e, those that predated the 385 hp Mag 454 and was one step above the 454 330 hp motors.

My father used to race boats when I was really young. It happened to be the same time of this boat. I had the pleasure of driving and riding in boats like this in anger. Totally awesome to hit 85 mph on the water. My father bought this super slick power catamaran hull and equipped it with outboards from mercury 4 of them being around 400 hp each. It was a blast and so much fun.

Its good to see you at the controls of this beauty. A big powerful boat like this covers a lot of water quickly and can be dangerous with someone inexperienced. When I was growing up I had an obsession with American muscle cars i still do, this is for sure a great tribute to keep a very cool formula 419 SR1 in such superb condition. Loved the hydraulic engine hood with its mirrors so cool even Q would have been proud, the engines looked so in keeping with its age, Nicky boy was giving it some 45° great fun another one off the bucket list.😃 Also thought the slow mo was a great touch👌 they say when your doing something you love it's nolonger work. 😉👍👍

I worked for Formula back in the day when built in North Miami Florida. Formula, Cigarette, Magnum, all basically shared same hull design (Don Aronow). The SR models were a bit heavy, but very strong and dependable. Great video, good memories, thanks.

Yeah. From what Scott has told me about this, it was basically a splashed 42 Revolution. Not a bad thing though, one of Cigs better hulls at the time. Back when Formula built cool boats. Not blaming the Porters they are just following with the times, but sad to see that they don't even offer a go-fast boat any more.

Great Video. I grew up watching the Formula SR1's in Abersoch North wales when Abersoch Land and Sea was a Formula dealer. That exact same boat Top Gun used to turn up every summer on a Artic trailer them days sporting three Petrol engines. Think it then went to Jersey after it had been fitted with the new engines. And a top end of "nearly 50" on a 40' boat like this is about 1/2 of what I'd like it to be. I'd settle for 525's or 540's and 90 or so, but like Phil mentioned about your wallet, mine is only responsible for fuel in a 2.5 hp mercury on a 16' canoe. (-;

@@rackemwells I agree. No point in a go fast boat when it goes as fast as a basic center console or some express cruiser. This was meant for a roaring gasoline engine going 90kts.

@@blewyd absolutely but hey, there’s no doubt I wouldn’t take this rig and enjoy the hell out of it. I’m sure it’s decent on fuel, handles big water really well, and likely has very usable low end torque and a feel of power at lower speed. Great for all types of things around me, The Chesapeake Bay, and while not a one trick pony, this rig would be hard to beat in an all around shootout.

If I were to buy a race boat (especially a SR1 Formula) I would need to have big, loud, gasoline engines for the race boat experience. Instead, I would probably buy a diesel powered express cruiser that is just as fast, economical, and more space inside and out.
