when it was fresh, the comics had more control over the material and the studios weren't prepared for what they were putting on air... as it went on, it became a bit like a scripted reality show.. they'd bring in new comics, usually those that wouldn't make it as a standup on their own thus more willing to take the lower pay for the hopes they might get one crappy film and retire or slim chance it would open more doors rather than stain their careers. The show itself meddled too much and of course, so did the studio... and govt as well in different periods meddled as well. So, it will never be like it was... if anything, it's a career killer for most. The handful that escape it and become successes, usually do so because they have better life, financial planning and career management skills. Those that don't sputter out not long after they leave the show. Adam Sandler is one of the better examples, albeit his works were subpar - one of the faults being that many comics make better dramatic actors than comedic actors for film/tv... but creating his own studio and churning out multiple low grade comedies than focusing on obtaining competitive roles in major releases is what kept him float once his contracts dried up.
