What would the original pixelated Sega Genesis version of Sonic The Hedgehog 1's zones all look like if they were recreated in 3d with all of the shapes and colors of the original game? You're about to find out. To add some flare to the new depth, each zone has a rewritten version of the original level theme.
creator notes I created this method of portraying all of the 2D sprites as a three dimensional object by dividing all of the flat sprites/images up into blocky "3d pixels" then I extruded the pixels that needed to stand out more than others to achieve this 3d effect. It was a fantastic project - and rewriting all of the music was a thrill too, because I am so fond of sonic music and felt like after 20+ years of playing the game over and over i'd added a little piece of it to my heart.

This is a true masterpiece!!! I love the first 4 Sonic Genesis titles soo much! Their my childhood. Seeing these classic zones in 3D is way past cool! For the past few months, I am currently working on a Sonic project inside Minecraft in a similar vein: bringing the 2D classics into the 3D realm. Man you put soo much love and effort into this and I love it! Leve design has always been a talent I want to master someday, which is why I appreciate these kinds of works by fans soo much! Are you talking tiger games? It's the computer calculating where every single file of sprite should go, if it would be just fast images it would be impossible to make a game. While yes animations (in 2d) are fast moving pictures, the computer still has to run through the code, what is the boundaries of the world etc... and the biggest hole in your comment is that games are "interactable" for example you can die a lot in sonic 2 or you can go through the whole game without dying. Pictures are just pictures, non-interactable

I've always imagined, remakes of Sonic 1, 2, CD, and 3K, with an option to switch the game's perspective, to either 2D or 3D. However, I can't complain, with Christian Whitehead remakes that we do have, and same goes for Sonic 3 Complete and Sonic 3 AIR.

Instead of manually dividing the pixels into blocks you couldve scaled up the assets by about 500% then convert the upscaled png to an svg then import it into blender then convert the svg into a mesh then extrude it on the y axis. Then you can use the remesh modifier, pick sharp to make the topology all squares

That's definitely a possibility with this video. However it's 4 years old now, and I've refined my technique a lot over the years. Check out some of my newer videos - I'm now required to draw the sprites from multiple angles to animate them etc. Thanks for the feedback though, nice to see a alternative and probably more optimal approach.

I have an question that might be odd but I had ( or some people prob ) an theory about on Final Zone when Eggman launches his pink spheres attack the spheres sometimes change different lightning shape and by pausing I notice it has sometimes an Nazi symbol and it’s possible you try to see even in 3D that sphere animation if it’s true ? Anyway keep up the good work

Troy Wright I totally get where you're coming from. I wanted to completely redefine the themes for each zone. Using the old FM synth from the genesis/megadrive would be too similar to the original music. I do appreciate that you don't like the more modern rewrites as much. I'll take that on board.
