I wonder how in those days when the actors did the stunts that they actually survived them. These men were just amazing.

Those were the days, no cgi, all practical effects, real stunts, and tripping horses with wires.

Interesting fact: during that last stunt, Buster Keaton was slammed into the ground so hard, he fractured his neck, though he only found out much later, when a doctor asked him when it happened. He said that he and the technical crew underestimated the force of the water, and he had a headache for a few days, but thought nothing of it.

Basically the clock hanging scene was done using a perspective trick, you can see it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXO2oaiQebCUgas And the vehicle and train stunts are a 100% real stunt.

The cameras were hand cranked. So they used "undercranking" which involved filming at a slow speed, and playback at 2x or 3x frames per second through the projector lens. This allowed stunts to be done at a slower pace with the car or train slowed down considerably. They also had the ability to cut and splice film to insert or remove action. Some of the scenes you see here were done by stunt men although the ones with close-ups are done by the actor-comic himself.

I think the one where he leaps from one building the other and falls through the awnings was done with a dummy, then they cut to the close up him clambering for the drain pipe. If you watch it back and do so at 0.25 speed which is in the settings (looks like a cog) next to CC, you get a better idea of the editing and as mentioned the speed of slow hand cranking. the famous clock scene was done in total secrecy, no photographs exist, with the camera angle looking down onto the busy street acting as the perfect distraction. GENIUS.

@joshua ashley I can answer that. That locomotive is Union Pacific #1237, a 4-6-2 Pacific type steam locomotive. It took a bit of digging but I’ve narrowed down that 1237 was likely built between 1908 and 1913. This guess is largely based off of the appearance of the locomotive, closely resembling pacifics used on southern Pacific and Illinois Central. From 1908 to 1913, UP, SP, and IC were controlled by Harrimon. When he ordered these three railroads their pacifics, he ordered them with very similar specifications including appearance. The side number on the tender is unusual for Union Pacific, but quite frequently by Illinois Central. On top of that, most UP engines were oil burners, while 1237 is a coal burner. IC pacifics were coal burners. These similarities lead me to believe that 1237 was built between 1908 and 1913. I don’t know who built it, but it was likely USRA.

Harold was a stunt coordinator and had a team working with him much as they do today. Safety was always his watch word. Of course he had Mattresses although if he hit them at speed he could of bounced off and would of been killed. Now stunt teams have progressed to air bags have have more technology at their finger tips. It still took nothing away from the bravery and skills that both Harold and Buster displayed. They were both accomplished acrobats and were extremely athletic.

But some of it was not. In "Ask Father" an early Lloyd short film the camera keeps rolling as he climbs 3 stories up the side of a building. The climb includes a brief cable walk as well. No Illusion. He rode on the back of a Culver City Fire truck in "Girl Shy" falling off at 35 mph, and being knocked out cold. 12 stitches. No illusion. In another film he hung off the side of a narrow gauge mountain railway car(Mount Lowe) over a deep canyon drop. No illusion. The Safety Last prop wall was at least 15 feet high as it involved more than two stories. You can clearly see that in the movie. Where did u get this 6 feet number? I do understand the run down HL club on here. One part trolling and two parts politics.

Apart from their talent and bravery, and ability to plan and execute stunts safely, Keaton and Lloyd had fans, and lots of them back then. Chaplin didn't do dangerous, fatal if done wrong, stunts. The Englishman doesn't have fans, he has a cult. A political cult of the Left who project onto him all their own causes and ideologies. A man who lived mostly in America during his productive years, in a mansion, with a serving staff, waited on hand and foot, and with a deeply flawed attachment to underage females. But the cult doesn't care, he was a millionaire but one of them in the proletariat. Give me the Yanks, Lloyd and Keaton, not the Limey Lefty, and the cult.

@@TinLizzie-uc1jw That's where he got his nickname Buster, from his busted neck.

cantopia No. He got his nickname Buster when he was only a few months old. Harry Houdini was visiting the Keaton’s and Buster’s father called him downstairs to meet Harry Houdini. Buster fell down the stairs without getting hurt. Then, Houdini said something to the effect of “My, what a Buster!”. A “Buster” was slang for a fall. The nickname stuck after that.
