Oh, my God! I have a lot of good memories of watching tv as a kid on Friday nights! My sister, my cousin and would get together to watch The Incredible Hulk, and The Dukes of Hazzard. We would have hot dogs, Ranch Style beans, and potato chips with Coca-cola for dinner! When Dallas would come on it was time for my cousin to go home, then my sister, and I would have to get ready for bed. We would always get up early on Saturdays for cartoons! Those were the days! 🤠👍🏻💓

We had a console TV and whenever David began to "hulk out" and I saw those white(yes they were white, not green) eyes, I would hide beside the TV thinking the Hulk could reach out and grab me. Of all the abandoned ideas you mention, I think the 2-hour series finale idea is the one I would've liked to see the most. I wanted to see the moment that Jack McGee realized that "John Doe" was David Banner. I wanted to hear that conversation the two of them had once all the chips were on the table. I wanted to get past the mind-numbingly repetitive procedural elements of the guest characters of the week, and get back to the story of the guy we'd been following. But it just never happened. The formula was set in stone, and few-to-no deviations could be tolerated. It's like nobody ever noticed that the best episodes were the ones where something _different_ happened. He's stuck with an injured McGee while (VERY conveniently) wearing a full face bandage and having lost his memory. He's stuck half way between Banner and the Hulk. These were the best because they led us to believe that something about the status quo might possibly change. But the only thing that ever really changed was that Jack started calling him "John", low-key acknowledging continuity with that face-bandage 2-parter. That was as much continuity as networks would tolerate, back in the day. If it wasn't mentioned in the opening credits sequence, it wouldn't be relevant info going forward. I tell ya one thing, though. I was re-watching some episodes a few years back, and there's one where David meets a psychic woman (even though he doesn't believe in it) who apparently touches someone and sees the way they're gonna die... or maybe just their future in general. I forget. But at the end of the episode, she hugs David good-bye (as guest characters tend to do) and she sees something that makes her look very sad and full of pity. We don't get to see this particular psychic vision (unlike every other vision she'd had in the episode) but her reaction fits 100% perfectly with the end of The Death of the Incredible Hulk TV movie. Like, this man's life will be one long tragedy... and then it will end that way too. I know there's little chance anybody was thinking of the events of that particular episode when they wrote the teleplay for the TV movie, like a decade later, but I like that it fits as well as it does.

The Incredible Hulk TV series is my number one all time favorite TV series for life and until my death. Bill Bixby was my childhood idol and hero and was my ultimate role model in his portrayal of Dr David Banner. Sadly, I never got to meet him. He died from Prostate Cancer when I was a senior in college. I have been blessed to have met Lou Ferrigno quite a few times over the years. The first episode I ever saw was the season one episode Never Give a Trucker an Even Break, which was written around stock footage from Duel, a low budget TV movie that was the debut of Steven Spielberg as a director. And I've been hooked ever since. :) I am a lifelong Hulkaholic.

Great video, @JonnyBaak. Although I was too young to quite remember the original UK broadcasts, I really enjoyed the series when I saw it for the first time when it was repeated here in the late 1980s. (And a bit of trivia you might already know: The only time Lou Ferrigno ever spoke as the Hulk was for a TV Times magazine advertisement in the UK). I'm quite anti-CGI in that I think it is overused and lazily used in modern cinema - "amazing effects" can't ever replace "good story". Whilst by today's standards, Ferrigno covered in green paint seems tame, it was forgivable for the stories and commitment that went with it. I don't think the series would have remotely survived without Bill Bixby's performance - he is so down to earth and likeable, inner sadness but carried off with a quiet dignity and always putting other's wellbeing before his own. The series was actually a bizarre juxtaposition, with Banner's down-to-earth intervening in whatever drama of the week, and then suddenly the comicbook-like appearance of the Hulk to deal with villains. And yet, somehow it worked. I never took to the three 1990s TV movies - they seemed cheap, lazy, a bit dated, and mostly boring unsubtle backdoor pilots for other shows, but at it's best, the original series is still very watchable. It's like 'The Fugitive' (from which the series borrows a lot) with the Jolly Green Giant thrown in.

Boris Karloff felt the same way about portraying the Frankenstein creature. He believed he should not speak and was not that happy with the second film, BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN when he was given dialogue. By Karloff's 3rd outing as the creature (SON...) he was silent once again. But interestingly enough Shelley's original novel of Frankenstein gives vast prose to the creature half way through the novel.

The "gay" connotation to the name is actually just a myth. Johnson said that alliterative names meant it was obvious you were watching a comic book. So, David was chosen from Ken's son's name. Also, Eric Kramer played Thor. Steve Levitt played Donald Blake.

Lost Age Comics I thought Stan Lee said in an interview that the producers were chanting Bruce to David because Bruce was seen as a gay name
@DCMarvelMultiverse5 жыл бұрын
@@gratefuljr Stan had a poor memory and liked to play up popular myths. Johnson said it was because the name was alliterative. The gay angle was likely, according to many historians, the result of a Jim Shooter penned scene in the Savage Hulk magazine wherein two gays dudes at a YMCA try to rape Banner in a shower.
@pjgathergood69874 жыл бұрын
Even since the original series being in production it was widely reported Bruce was changed to David for supposed 'gay' connections. Furthermore, I would even love to see the exact origin story of the "She-Hulk" based on the very first issue of the "Savage She-Hulk" comic book series from 1979 that would be uniquely convincing to viewers like me.

fascinating thank you - was funny to see Lou on Donald Trump's the Apprentice series!

THIS was The Hulk! Hate what the MCU has turned these iconic characters into. To this day Bill and Lou have not been topped in those roles and probably never will be as far as I'm concerned. I'm not against CGI all that much when done right and sparingly but I much prefer Hulk as portayed by a real man. Gives much more depth and soul imo.

imagine how different this show would be if it were remade in the 2020s

Much less heart , intelligence and soul more CGI, over the top action and political messages lol.
