This 1970 comedy won a bucketful of Emmys during its seven year run; the show was named 'Outstanding Comedy' three times, the same number of times its star was named 'Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series'. The series placed #6 on a list of the 101 best written tv series of all time. The supporting cast was top-notch, and three of them would continue their roles in spin-off series. 'Love Is All Around', the shows' theme song, was written and performed by Sonny Curtis.
00:00 First season open; the lyrics were different from later seasons to reflect Mary's first year in a new job.
00:55 Fourth season opening; these lyrics were used from season two onward.
01:49 Seventh season open: the instrumental backing was refreshed with a new arrangement.
02:44 End credits.
3:18 Mimsie.

By the fall of 1973, the Saturday night lineup on CBS was All in the Family at 8:00, MASH at 8:30, Mary Tyler Moore at 9:00, Bob Newhart at 9:30 and Carol Burnett at 10:00. A lot of people stayed home to watch TV on Saturday nights. The shows were too good to miss. One hit after another.

This was THEE BEST, classic, prime-time TV lineup ever (ever meaning for those born between 1955 and 1965, or later). My family never missed a Saturday night with all of us gathering around the TV set (it was called a TV set back then) to spend three hours of innocent, glorious comedy entertainment ... where have those days gone ... ???

Me too, lovely memories of watching this on UK TV in the 70s. The first version of the theme is the one I remember best and those iconic images of her confidently strolling through her new hometown and loving life - all of it done off the cuff, as you can tell by the people looking on in the background (years later they tracked down the woman looking at Mary at 0:51 as if she were a mad woman and she confirmed she was wondering what is that silly woman doing dancing around like that in freezing cold weather - she had no idea who she was or that it was all being filmed lol).

So many good memories. Life was never easy,... still. It was amazing. We would be at my grandparents. I would sit on Grandma's lap. My twin on Grampas. I told her I was going to be just like Mary. Leave the small town and farm. Go to the city, have a job and friends. She would smile. Then Bob Newhart was on I think. I told her I was going to live in a very tall building someday. I did. On the same block as the building shown in the show. Lol. I did. Then one day, I met Mary Tyler Moore at a fund raiser. Amazing woman. I never got the chance to tell Grandma and show her. Today. I am back in my small town and farm. Catching my breath. Ready for round two. Thank you Mary!

Thankfully she is still here in 2020 and when I do hear this I call her and tell her how much I love her and how much I appreciated her struggles in the 70’s after the divorce. Like this show, back then it was a lot like that for my mom, She had to make it on her own without a husband and she did it all very well. Many of the stories written for the show could be applied to real life struggles back then and it was easy to relate to it. I suppose that is a large reason the show lasted so long and is still liked today.

You got all three openings, the best version of the closing theme, and Mimsie... Excellent!

Thanks for posting all the theme songs back to back! One of my favorite shows of all time. When watching this show it is like being with family. This was the best show ever written. The theme songs are so comforting and warm.

You just want to have everything done for you so you that you won't have to take a few seconds and go and find it yourself. Your laziness is appalling

I like how you did all the different versions of the opening, and then the closing credits at the end, and even got all the major characters that had been in the show throughout the years listed in the closing credits too! Well done, David Gideon.

Not all of them. The last version was truncated, and instrumental only. He didn't show it. It was the last two seasons.

Thanks for posting. I grew up in the 1970s and this was my favourite show, along with Carol Burnett. This opening brings back so many happy memories of never missing an episode over seven years. One of the great TV comedies of all time. oprah was also a huge fan and was influenced by Mary Richards' TV career, and there's a great clip of her sobbing when MTM made a surprise appearance on her show.

Mary was the very essence of the 70's modern cosmopolitan woman, classy, intelligent, independent, successful and very attractive. She was like the song, she had it all!
