I just bought one from a guy who had it since Feb, 65 in San Francisco. It was his only car. The month tag is about an inch thick. Needs work, but super excited especially that I found a video that is exactly like mine. Thank you.

65 was the first year when the heater controls became levers situated either side of the handbrake. It was the only year where the tips of those levers were the square type. Keep the informative videos coming Chris, great stuff!

Made into a double bed and the moon roof was wonderful for star gazing. Spent many great times in my 65.

My family had a 64 bug the same color. But its was a real bare bones model. Had no radio, a lever on the floor for reserve gas (no gas gauge) it had a full rubber strip around the outside windows (no little plastic liner in the middle) a white steering wheel with just a round horn button in the middle, the light cover on the back engine lid was a smaller rounded one. There was no trim on the top of the doors up inside. (there was a roof liner) it did have shoulder seat belts in it. (saved my brother life in a head on collision in 1968) I was only 3 when we got it and 7 when it was wrecked, but my memory is pretty sharp about that car!

Another change for 1965 is that the thermostat ring was gone. This was the first year with the flaps inside the fan housing. VW also changed their chassis numbering system. From 1965 it started with 115, in 1966 it started with 116, in 1967 it was 117 and so on. This makes it pretty easy to find out the model year of the 1965 and newer cars. This is just a nerdy detail but are you sure that is the original distributor for the car? It looks like a ZV/PAU distributor. The one with the big cap and internal condenser. If I am not mistaken the last year for the big cap distributor was 1964. Sometime during the 64 model year the beetle got the smaller distributor with the aluminium housing and the external condenser. The 65 beetle usually came with a 205 series distributor (they look very similar to the 1300 distributors). But functionally the distributors for the 40hp are interchangable with each other. They are all timed to 10btdc and give the same amount of timing advance. In my opinion the ZV/PAU has the most pleasing look.

Hey Chris My first new car was a ‘65 bug...blue (not the same as in this video). When I told the dealer I wanted to use a Judson supercharger, they convinced the importer to sell them a “1500cc Transporter” engine which they installed before I took delivery. I later added a scavenger style tuned exhaust, Fish Canadian carburetor and canister oil filter. Thanks for the memories.

Great video! Two changes between '64 and '65 that I recall when I had my first car, a '64 Beetle bought in '71. One was that the heating control knob was changed to levers, and the other subtle one was that the wipers formerly parked to the right, in '65 to the left.

Of all the '65 model features, the folding rear seat and expanded cargo platform is probably the most significant. Up to this time, a flat folding seat for cargo capacity was reserved only for wagons and and optional in some Corvairs (sporty compact hatchbacks were still some time away in the 70s). The Mustang Fastback (which came the same month as the '65 Beetle model year start - August 1964) had this too. But I wonder if VW engineers were following the Barracuda closely which had pioneered the feature several months earlier and then decided to include it in their '65 model updates?

Another change was the direction of the windshield wipers. They point to the drivers side rather than to the passenger side. Another change I also noticed was the size of the dash where it meets the windshield. The top of the dash sticks out just slightly more. I had a 65 in this exact color combo. Only difference was mine had a sunroof. Really miss mine. Great video

Hi Chris, as usual ,a great video.Still, what makes you really special, is your willingness to share your knowledge with anyone interested.That is the mark of a superior craftman and person.Cheers mate,you have helped me a lot ! Something I`d like to know if its possible, is how many newtons has the gas struts they use to replace the original springs on the hood of the bug.I`ve seen them in pics but I can not find them over here,so I`m planning of adapting others....I guess should be around 180NM each.. anyway, congratulations on your work ! I love it mate.

Beautiful Restore ..... My first car.... although in Java Green ....with 40k on it ...lol One addition that I found and loved at the time was a super easy to install short throw kit plus a nice wooden shift knob with the shift pattern on it .... The kit was really nothing more than a 1 inch wedge with longer screws that essentially just changed with pivot point on the stick ....!?? It created a shorter throw, and the wooden knob vs. the stock black or ivory plastic , you just HAD to Have .... !!! I buffed the hell out of my Java Green and topped it with old fashioned yellow can Simonize.... and Man Did It Shine ...!!!

Awesome looking and yeah best color. I had a 65 in seamist and purposely had Blackwall tires to enhance those Moon hubcaps. Had the car in stock form in the 70s because of gas prices and going to school. Between school/work and home I was putting over 100 miles a day on car. I got frustrated with having to flat foot it to get from point A-B so I got 4.125 final gear and .82 4th and dual port heads and 74mm crank and 88mm pistons and dual carbs to match. Car turned into a joy to drive and got a little better gas mileage. I drove that car for years with the mods and ran beautiful when I sold it. Needed to be gone through again but I had kids and all by then. It needed king pins and body work but was still a worthy car. Can't believe I'm saying car was one of my cars that I let ger away 😁

Hey Chris - I have a '70 and you are correct. The headliner has the "tuck" at the rear window. It amazes me at the amount of effort the factory put in on the upholstery for their cars. The headliner is a difficult installation and that "tuck" doesn't make it any easier.

Purchased ours new in 1968................A tin top camper. Spent many wonderful years camping with it. Those were the days when you can go, pitch a tent without a reservation.

65 is the first year with the new type of chassis number. The first digit ‘1' denotes type 1 (beetle). Second digit used to denote body style. The third digit ‘5' indicates the model year 1965.

A couple of thoughts. I'm currently researching this because I have a newly rebuilt bone stock June of 1965 40 hp motor and it's running rich. My original owners manual says to set them at .008" intake and ".012" exhaust. On what looks to be the original sticker on my fan housing it says to adjust both intake and exhaust at .004" so of course this confuses things somewhat. It would seem the assembly line worker installing later short stud motors would have the last word (and the correct stickers on his bench) knowing which motor went into the car. There are some threads on Samba that say if your motor is an earlier (part of 1965 and earlier) long stud motor they should be adjusted to .008" intake and ".012" exhaust. But later short stud motors like mine (square mount boss under rocker arms, head number 113 101 373 / 63) should be adjusted to .004". One guy adjusts his short stud 40hp #3 exhaust at #.006" and the rest at #.004 as a precaution since #3 exhaust valve tends to run hotter. The other thing I noticed is that two of the fuel lines on the cut off device on this motor are being used (bypassing the function of the device). Is there a reason for this? I have one of those and am running it on mine. My understanding is that they prevent flooding the carb when it's parked on a hill. Just wondering if having all the lines connected can cause any problems with fuel delivery or not. Thanks, Christopher

If you have square boss, just adjust to .006 across the board. Try eliminating those fuel adapters and run it straight to see if things change.

Will get a 65 as a daily driver in the future. Might sound like a horror story for the "keep it spotless" veteran car owners out there i reckon. Heard rumors that POR-15 is good for keeping rust in check.

My first car was a white 10 year old ‘65 I bought for $500. The steering needed replaced before driving but otherwise it was in good shape. It was horribly underpowered but it got me where I was going.

Same color I had back in mid 70's early 80's, and the easiest year to change to 12v, still have the motor- might have to sell it soon, car is long gone

My dad had a 64 but it had the small round license plate light which he was mad about. The dealer told him that even though they went to the wider light in 64, early builds still had the older style light.

VW was famous for using the old style parts on the next year until the supply ran out. So, some of the early versions of model years had random carry over parts.

in Australia we went from Australian built to German built bugs but our bugs are different my 69 but dont have head rests like the US ones do

Hey Chris! I've been watching your videos for years now. You've given me tons of helpful tips. But I have a question I NEED help with. I have excessive steering play on my 1970 vw bug. I checked the tie rods & it's not those. I'm VERY sure it's the gearbox. I adjusted the sector screw pretty tight while giving it a little slack but it still has play. I also sprayed white lithium grease inside the box via 2 of the bolt holes to help grease up the inside & maybe try & reduce the play. It helped a little but i dont want to replace the gearbox & I don't know what else to do or try. Any tips?

Have you read John Muir's "How to Keep Your VW Alive"? Good book for whatever skill level you are. I pair it with the Bentley manual too. Might be that your steering box is just worn out. The Samba (the website and forum) is an excellent resource as well. Just search for "thesamba forum" just like tha with no space between the first two words.

Stock radios for the year, whether they work or not, I usually just buy a vintage bluetooth speaker to put in the bug and use my phone. But a vid on radios would be cool.

Did the back seat frame change this year? Building a '60, and I think I have the wrong one? Seems like a rectangular addition to the frames bottom. Any help would be much appreciated. Just bought your tarboards for my engine bay. Thanks!

No 65 with the square boss heads would be .006 on intake and exhaust.

Great video! Did you guys paint this car? I'm working on a Sea Blue '64 restoration and am trying to get the paint color nailed down. PPG #12333 is where I am right now. Any pointers on getting a good match with the original L360 for Beetles? What tires are those? Another interesting bit regarding my August 63 car is the decklid is a three month only part. It has a 64 style body line that ends above the housing, a 63 style light housing, and a T handle mechanism.

Hey Chris, I have a black early (Oct '63) '64 with the small white signal lights on the fender. It didn't come with the D-Ring horn and the best I can determine it is original.

Ah yeah that is a good call. I thought about that when the video was already uploaded, I remember I had a 64 with just the straight horn bar. no D ring. You are right.

Correct Chris on the '64 and '65 having the straight horn button. Reconphil, I have a (3rd week of Nov "63) 1964 that came with the new larger sized turn signals. I think the change over was in the first week of Nov, "63 for that. I think there is a thread discussing that on the Samba.

Beautiful job but did you run out of hoses? They're short, both the fuel line and the breather hose. Also, no fuel line clamps?

I think I've just noticed something.....you haven't done your "vallone special" with tweed using the 65 pattern have you....maybe I'll try it on my car....a nice tan leather with brown tweed could be nice

Age 11, thats great. I'm an old guy now but when I was age 15 I bought a 1962 VW ragtop bug. The engine was in the back seat and it was in very poor but not rusted condition. Only had a JC Whittney catalog to buy seat covers, ragtop, etc. Used a lot of bondo and hundreds of hours of work to finish it. I took my drivers test with that car. At one time in high school it could only be started by pushing and popping the clutch. It''s great to see someone your age interested in these cars. It will be something you will never forget. For me 45 years ago, but I remember every drive, the smell, and sound of that car.

Back in the early eighties I had a 1965 VW Bug was my very first car. My VW Bug did not have the push button to open the rear deck lid it had the the old-style t handle. Maybe it was an early early 65 late 64 maybe I'm not sure just want to put that out there.

Hey Chris happy Saturday I really enjoy your videos. I have a 1961 bug came with the steering column and steering wheel same color as the car from factory beryl green to be exact and e brake and other accessories napal green. You think if I change the color on them to give contrast say silver beige would depreciate the value of the car??? Or do you recommend staying with what came from factory?

Nah, I do not think you will devalue anything. But it was rare to have those pieces colored the color of the car. They only did that for a short time.

Hello, so I too have a 65 and was wondering if the 65 model year only came with magura fuel gauges? I ask because I haven't seen one with a video brand. Thanks

@@chickensoup5452 I believe so, in the USA at least it was the same gauge. Earlier bugs had those odd ball options of like a Denhe gauge or something.

Hey Chris hope you see this or somebody else can help me out. Just got a 65 bug. Turn signal was broke off and I’m going to replace that. My question is the high beam switch. Is it on the lever or is it suppose to be on the floor? Mine doesn’t have a spot on the floor. Not a complete restore but would like them to work. Thanks

Yes it should be on the floor, check behind the front firewall carpet or mat.

Chris, How much does a restoration like this cost the client ?? I have a 1967 that I would like to start working on and getting it back to being operational and completely stock. Then, I'd buy a 1965 and fully customize IT to be a complete show car ... Thanks for the video.

Hi Chris Im looking at buying a 65 at the moment which is original however i noticed the seats have more of a line pattern to them so slightly differ to the checkers ones in your video. Could you please tell me if the pattern varied on the 65 bug, Thank you.

Hi Chris, Thanks for reply. I forgot to mention the car in Question is a Sweden spec car. Everything about the seats is the same as your car in the video apart from the pattern. Im told they are Original, Is there anyway i can send you a photo? Ive been watching your videos for years and really value your opinion. Kind regards Phil

@Chris_Vallone, I believe the doors on my car are off a different model year? My 65 bug had its vent windows removed & I would like to reinstall them. Additionally, the door release rod is different from this video. Is there anyway to identify if the door is correct? thanks

Yeah I am wondering that myself. Looks just like a drain plug, but then you can pop it out if you need access to the license light.

Hi Chris, I have a 65 and want to return the wheel to an original/repro thats shown in the video. Can only seem to find the d/ring shape horn. Where should i look for the original type? Thanks in advance.

You would have to source a good used German wheel, as I believe the only repop wheels cater to the "D" ring.

Yeah I believe they sell new tins, but they are not exact. You would have to probably source some good used ones. Check thesamba.com or some FB VW groups to help you.

Something in show condition like this could get to like 35k in some instances. #2 cars can be mid teens to 20s.
