Westerns have a long history of being often recycled, borrowed, chopped and changed for various productions, going back to the 1940s and ‘50s. Rebooting classics is not a new thing. It might surprise you to know some of your favorite Westerns are in fact remakes. Let’s take a look at some Westerns, or even movies adapted from Westerns.
To start off, I'll make a quick mention of some of the obvious remakes that I think it's fair to say most of us are aware of and likely don’t appreciate as much as the originals. Let me know.

Stagecoach has been remade several times, none even close to being better than the original. I actually think the Quaid remake of The Alamo is the best version of the events made to date (and there are a fair number of Alamo movies, which might even make a good subject for one of your videos). Destry, both versions I like a lot (anybody who has read the Max Brand novel, however, won't recognize the book in either version) and both can stand alone as good movies. A much overlooked comic Western with Charles Laughton, Ruggles of Redgap, was remade with Bob Hope as Fancy Pants and both are very good. Good one, Wrangler, thanks again.

It seems a good story well done, works, in Japan, in space, in the West, or in Prohibition. Thanks for keeping "The Good Stuff " alive and more than old memories. God bless you.

I admit to not seeing the Japanese films, but I can name only two western remakes that surpassed the original and one that was equally good. 1: Law and Order ( 1932) with Walter Huston was remade as My Darling Clementine, Gunfight At The OK Corral, Tombstone, Hour Of The Gun and Wyatt Earp. 2: The Badlanders was a remake of The Asphalt Jungle. Since I prefer Alan Ladd to Sterling Hayden, give me the remake in what I think is Ladd’s best Western NOT named Shane). The Texan ( 1930) with Gary Cooper and Fay Wray was remade as Branded with Ladd, Wanda Hendrix and Charles Bickford. Of course I am a huge fan of Cooper and Ladd ( especially in westerns), as well as Wray so both films appeal to me.

Bruce Willis’ 1911’s seem to have extraordinary capacity in Last Man Standing.

Kudos for including "The Outrage". Nice work. Another entry for your consideration; the first time I saw Clint Eastwoods' "Pale Rider", I couldn't help but think of it as a remake of my all time personal favorite western "Shane". Subsequent viewings have done nothing to change my mind.

A few you missed: 1. Red River, with John Wayne and Montgomery Clift, was a reworking of Mutiny on the Bounty. 2. Rio Lobo was a remake of El Dorado, which was itself a remake of Rio Bravo. Howard Hawks made the same western 3 times. 3. Yojimbo, A Fistful of Dollars and Last Man Standing all take their plotline from Dashiell Hammett’s novel Red Harvest. Hammett’s work was well-known to film makers due to the success of the Maltese Falcon (itself a remake). 4. John Wayne’s The Alamo was actually the 4th film recounting of the story, making the 2004 version a remake of a remake of a remake of a remake. If you count made-for-TV versions, it gets even crazier. And if you think the 2004 version was unnecessary, you haven’t seen the 1960 version. It was an account of the legend of the Alamo, not an attempt to tell the real story.

Yes like I said, it was not uncommon to remake, reinvent and reimagine westerns over the years.

I Guess Dead Men can't sue. Dashiell Hammett's Red Harvest (1929) has the same basic plot of Yojimbo. My favorite adaption of this plot is The Warrior and the Sorceress (1984) with David Carradine as Kain (No Lawsuit there), Luke Askew as the main villain and María Socas as the Sorceress, a role she performed topless for most of the movie. Can I get a Hell Yeah!

Some movies should not be remade, namely The Magnificent Seven and ANYTHING by John Wayne!

The remake of True Grit was excellent. As good as the original, IMO.

An argument can be made that there was a loose -- and humerous -- remake of The Magnificent Seven in the form of . . . *¡THREE AMIGOS!*

Missed a BIG one --- El Doardo was the real remake of Rio Bravo. Rio Lobo, IMO, has more changes. But, yeah, all the same basic story.

Did you know that Rio Bravo was made as an answer to High Noon?? In High Noon, the hero asks for help and gets none. In Rio Bravo, the hero is offered help, and refuses it. Totally opposite movies, that somehow, are both quintessentially American.

I may be confused, but perhaps you were intending to show El Dorado as the remake of Rio Bravo? I don't think Rio Lobo was :) Regarding which Destry was the best? No contest -- Destry Rides Again, if only for the gals barfight and ending mob scenes, not to mention better acting/writing.

Many people describe the Rio Bravo trilogy as Howard Hawkes remaking the same movie twice. They include Rio Bravo (1959), El Dorado (1966) and Rio Lobo (1970).
