IMO the best of these is The Night of the Hunter. Brief Encounter is a beautiful film too, much better than his Kwai and Lawrence. And The Third Man is WAY overrated. If only Welles had directed it.

John Wayne made great movies that were uplifting and told good stories. But he was anything but "a stickler for reality". It is very common to see Trapdoor Springfields in time periods when only muzzle loaders were used. Also his use of Colt Single Action Army pistol and lever action Winchesters in the 1860s when both were a decade or more from being produced. You can see example of both these errors in "The Undefeated". That doesn't make his movies bad. He was telling a story and they were just set pieces. Take in the story and don't worry about the minutia.

To those of us who study's old west the term Mountain Man refers to the fur trappers of the Rocky Mountain west. Many of the movies on your list have nothing to do with the subject.

First one that's wrong. "The Big Trail". Wayne is not carrying an English made rifled musket firing a .577 minie ball, although you do show the correct minie balls. It appears he is carrying a U.S. manufactured 1863 rifled musket. A dead giveaway is the springs in the stock retaining the barrel bands. The British muskets did not use them. The ,minie balls shown were correct for the U.S. piece though. Those for then British used no grease grooves.

I guess there's some disagreement as to what constitutes a mountain man movie in the comments. Here's one working definition I found: "The mountain man genre is a popular choice for viewers who are looking for stories of survival, adventure, and rugged wilderness. These movies often feature characters who live off the land, hunt for their own food, and navigate through treacherous terrain." Not sure all these qualify as per the above (some just involve characters who happen to be in the mountains), but here are some additional candidates: 1. The Grey 2. Deliverance 3. The Mountain Between Us 4. The Edge 5. White Fang 6. The Call of the Wild 7. The Great Alone 8. Grizzly Man

Why do you never point out that so many scenes in Pale Rider are directly lifted from Shane? They are both great movies, from different times, but if you binge watch both, you can't miss the commonalities .😁

Technically, the "Mountain Man" Era on the American Western Frontier ran roughly from about 1806 to 1840. The North American French Fur Trade era, circa 1540-1803, roughly could also be considered a "Mountain Man" era, as could the British fur trade era circa 1760's to late 1800's. The major difference between fur traders from France and Britain and the American Fur Trappers, is that the French and British mainly traded with the Native Tribes, mainly in trading posts along rivers, while the American Fur Trappers, ventured into Native Tribe Territories, actually trapping, which minimized trade with the Native Tribes. The American Fur Trapper methods created much hostility among the Native Tribes, and there were many bloody battles and skirmishes fought as a result. On the negative side, the American Fur Trapper methods effectively began the destruction and subjugation of the Native Tribes. On the positive side, the American Fur Trapper methods blazed the main trails and explored undiscovered lands, leading to the Oregon-California Trail wagon train era, that began just before the end of the Fur Trapper era. Post-Mexican War (1846-1848), the American Interior between California and the Mississippi River, would likely have remained unsettled and sparsely populated well into the 20th Century, had the California Gold Rush not occurred. By the late 1850's. the rich gold strike in California motivated gold / silver prospectors to began roaming into the great empty American interior, East of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, to look for "color". They found "color" and the resulting gold rushes and silver strikes created the new Territories of Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Colorado, Arizona, and Dakota Territory. The gold rushes and silver strikes created interconnecting new trails to the main trails originally established by the Fur Trappers, and the newly built mining camps and towns soon had freight and stage lines to supply them. By the 1860's, construction of the Transcontinental Railroad, blazed a more modern new trail across the American interior, greatly aiding settlement of the post-Civil War Western Frontier. Of course, railroad building across Native Tribe territory, and further intrusions into Native lands caused by gold and silver strikes, brought hostilities between the Native Tribes and Settlers to a boiling over point, so that the last quarter of the 19th Century was one of constant warfare between the Native Tribes and U.S. Army forces protecting settlers, prospectors and railroad construction workers, that did not really cease until the 1890's.

The Mountain Men is DEFINITELY on the list! BTW, Charleton Heston and his son, Fraser, who directed the film, had an absolute BALL at that rondyvoo! Mostly, they just filmed the goins' on without botherin' to tell the folks what they was s'posed to do. Heston took part in a "raw egg" shoot; if ye missed yer egg, y'had ta EAT it, and some of them weren't zactly on the' FRESH side! Well, Heston MISSED, and ATE! Wernt no PILGRIM; knowt the diff'rence tween fat cow and old bull!

Shane is without question the best one on your list. Overlooks. Well known Yellowstone Kelly. Probably Clint Walker’s best film. Rarities: Two from Gary Cooper: Wolf Song and Fighting Caravans. Wolf Song is one of Cooper’s least seen westerns ( although actually available on KZbin).

You could have left out The Last Picture Show. Still feel this film has no redeeming plot, Ben Johnson performance was probably the best part of the movie. Still would love to have seen Young Mister Lincoln on this list, a John Ford directed and Henry Fonda movie that is always overlooked now a days. So glad you included 12 Angery Men, some consider one of the best movies ever made along with Casablanca and Maltese Falcon. And what about It's A Wonderful Life. How about some classic black And white movies that don't have a bleak ending.

The premise of the movie "Man Hunt" (the Allied assassination of Hitler) may have been good emotional fodder, but the reality was the Allied High Command forbade Hitler's assassination. This was because they believed the Allies had a better chance to win WWII with Hitler alive, as he was countermanding the sensible advice of his own high command. This is one reason the German high command tried to assassinate Hitler themselves.
