Savage comment from the Doctor. Tegan (on Aunt Vanessa): You’ve seen her? Doctor: Well, a little of her.
@TheElderBlotch6 ай бұрын
I'm so excited you've finally made it to Tegan, she's one of my all-time favourite companions. Sometimes she gets called out by fans for endlessly complaining but that fiery streak and willingness in her to challenge the Doctor is exactly why I enjoy her so much, that and how fiercely loyal she ends up being to both the Doctor and her fellow companions. While he does often veer into pantomime, Anthony Ainley is a terrific Master and that sinister chuckle of his is a huge part of the character's legacy. What fan didn't freak out when that same laugh came from Yana's fob watch in Utopia or when the Saxon-Master referenced the upcoming "please attend carefully" line? And the Master doesn't get enough credit for how scary he is here as this insidious killer lurking in the shadows and cold-bloodedly murdering random passers-by, unseen and only that infamous evil cackle signalling he was ever there at all...
@paulhammond69786 ай бұрын
Tegan is great. I think by the time we got to a future companion with the sixth Doctor the constant writing of Doctor/companion bickering had gotten to be very old hat. As far as Tony Ainley goes, he was the original Master to me (I wasn't around for Roger Delgado), and I reckon a lot of the way his performance ended up was down to the directors telling him to go for more, and not necessarily just his own choices.

_Really_ geeky musical fun fact: in ep.2, when the TARDIS lands on the river barge, the rising arpeggio on the synthesiser is taken from Wagner's opera Das Rheingold, and signifies the river Rhine.

"We got to be prepared for the worst" - Logopolis is an epic finale to a superlative season, thanks to its weighty subject matter, foreboding atmosphere and the enormous sense of scale. What really makes this story excel is the phenomenal score by Paddy Kingsland, which perfectly adds to the foreboding, mysterious and haunting atmosphere. Janet Fielding as Tegan is one of the quintessential Classic Who companions and one of my personal favourites. Showrunner John Nathan-Turner introduced her as means of drawing in Australian audiences (JNT was all about hype and publicity).

Fun fact: The location with the motorway Police Box is the Barnet bypass and it was chosen because it was one of the last remaining real Police Boxes left in the country. All was well on the location recce, however when the crew turned up to film they found that the box has been demolished and had to use the previous TARDIS prop to stand in for it 😅
@sdball016 ай бұрын
Yes, the location was inspired by the producer noticing a real police box still standing on the Barnet Bypass. Unfortunately, by the time that production started, the police box had been demolished. They then chose the alternative filming location , roughly 25 miles away from Barnet, of the Amersham Road (A413), near Denham in Buckinghamshire. 🙂
@NClarkCreative6 ай бұрын
@@sdball01 Ah, noted! First heard that story through the DVD commentary some years ago but it’s always struck me as odd that the location they claimed to be the Barnet bypass looked suspiciously unlike any photos I’d ever seen of it at the time. Now I know why 😁

Logopolis is one of the most iconic stories ever (Even though it's a bit thin on plot) the sense of tension and drama is one of parts that makes it great. Tegan is one of those companions who is consistent and has depth but has a personality that can be a bit divisive. Janet Fielding portays the character brilliantly but Tegan for a long time was one of my least favourite companions. In fact Power of the Doctor was the story that actually made me warm up to her and understand her motivation more. So Chibnall had that going for him! The Master is especially menacing in this story and I love the TCE in this episode. Logopolis is one of my favourite worlds. I love the civilisation and how it has an entire society built on Mathematics. It's a unique 'planet of hats' concepts.

This was the first time in years (rooftop in The Sunmakers-?) to film in London-??? When the Doctor has his wacky idea to sink the TARDIS, landing on Cadogan Pier on the Thames. This pier on the side of Chelsea, opposite Battersea, has a Rock music heritage. The Clash filmed video for "London Calling' at night, in rain, on Cadogan Pier in 1979. The bridge, Albert Bridge has been filmed in a number of movies, including The Who's "Quadrophenia". The Irish/English band The Pogues had their ballad "early morning Albert Bridge". The 90's+ band Supergrass were filmed in video hopping on Po-go-stiks across the Albert "late in the Day" in 1997, across into Battersea Park, where there is a fine Buddhist shrine. Up the Thames, by a Half-mile is the Battersea Power Station, used on the cover of Pink Floyd's "animals" in 1977. (and seen in modern Who in a Cyberman episode) -I've been to London a number of times, over the years, and visited locations.
@sdball016 ай бұрын
Never thought of that before but yes, you're correct, season 15 was the last time they had filmed in London. 👍 The actual rooftop location for 'The Sunmakers' was filmed on a tobacco factory in Bristol. However, they did film in the Deep Tube underground tunnels in Camden Town. Also, the TARDIS swimming pool scenes for 'The Invasion of Time' were filmed in Hammersmith. 🙂

For the most part I like Tegan. She doesn’t take crap. In some stories I want to yell at her to get ahold of herself cause she can get hysterical and panic. But the stories where she holds it together, and especially when she is actually enjoying herself in a locale, I like her. Even so most of the time when she panics it’s kinda understandable if still annoying. But of this crop of companions Nyssa is easily my favorite. She’s calm, nerdy, reasonable, and not to be crossed lightly. Her stoicism also nicely counterpoints tegans passion.

I've been waiting for this ever since "Power of the Doctor"! (...as I'm sure many other people watching this were too.) Teagan has always been one of my favorite companions with her return in Jodie Whittaker's last story being one of the highlights since the shows revival in 2005. I have a million things I want to shout, but...spoilers... and yeah that music😮... ... I remember when I first saw this back in 82 I think it was. I was 12 years old and had been watching the show for about 2 years on my local PBS station Channel 6 CMU public broadcasting in Michigan. I was still in my first round of seeing any Doctor Who whatsoever. Like many PBS stations in the late 70s early 80s when Doctor Who really started taking off in the United States they started with Tom Baker, I knew nothing about the show beyond that. I had no idea what was about to happen or for that matter what was happening in this story as it was so out of the box for anything on television I'd ever seen up until this point. This is to me one of the shows central core lore stories with questions I had since Tom Baker's first story "Robot" getting finally answered. Season 18 through 22 is my favorite era of Doctor Who. Like many others with similar experiences, this story was the one that set the hook for us being fans forever, sort of like Stockholm Syndrome LOL. I say this not because it was bad, but because it was good, terribly good😢...🤭🤫🤐😔😥😭...Damn Michael Myers... I so love you for that! Laughter through tears is a wonderful thing. Thank you. You know... I wonder if Patty Kingsland ( pretty sure that was the composer, please someone correct me if I'm wrong) was inspired by John Carpenter's Halloween music? Very appropriate in a cheeky way. This Master posessing Tremas and his creeptastic laugh, the horrific way the police officer is dragged into the Police Box(which at the time I had no idea what one of those actually was)/"TARDIS", Tegan's Auntie unceremoniously murdered, the Watcher(Michael😅), etc, etc, and the SPOILERS... this next week is going to be even longer than the last one LOL I think your break is very well timed as you might need it after this one. "Brave heart..."...Sesska.😊😮😢

I love how scared you were of the Watcher. :D And you mentioned the Tardis spa! I think the only reason the Doctor wouldn't let you be a companion is because you'd say "this is some f*ckery" in every episode. I'm liking Adric more than I remember. His confusion about expressions like "standing on their heads" was very Jamie-like (and I'm sure some fans think it's sacrilege to compare Adric to Jamie). I'm so confused about how Tegan ended up on the Doctor's Tardis after she was on Traken though. The Doctor didn't go back to Traken and by that point, the two Tardises seemed to have "unlinked" from each other.
@paulhammond69786 ай бұрын
Nyssa? She mentioned that "the Doctor's friend" had brought her to Logopolis. The other Tardis belonged to the Master, it wasn't him who brought Nyssa. We find out who she means by "the Doctor's friend" later in the story.

@@paulhammond6978 No, Tegan. Tegan gets into the Doctor's Tardis on Earth and starts wandering around and getting lost, right? We don't actually see her get into the Master's Tardis but I'll let that slide because we can assume she just wandered in there while she was lost. However, she gets OUT of the Master's Tardis when it lands on Traken. She sits around for a little while, then presumably goes back into his Tardis when it lands again. The DOCTOR'S Tardis never lands on Traken. It goes from the boat on the Thames to Logopolis. But Tegan somehow gets into it on Traken.

This story does have a lot crammed in it. Nyssa was added in as a companion at the last minute due to Producer John Nathan-Turner really enjoying the character and thus, had actress Sarah Sutton sign on for a full season. However, Janet Feilding had already been cast as Tegan Jovanka, with her story and encounter with the Doctor already mapped out. So, last minute rewrites had to be made. This also was one of the rare times the Doctor traveled with three companions. I believe it is the fourth or fifth depending on if you count Vicki joining the team separate from Susan.

I was pleased to see Nyssa back, and the fact she was originally intended a one-off character for only Keeper of Traken would have been a shame in billions of ways and also Keeper of Traken bringing back the Master as the principal villain was awesome too he was not the original intended principal villain for Keeper of Traken the fact he came back after nearly 5 years away after Deadly Assassin was a nice surprise. I do say Seska the actor who played the elderly keeper in Keeper of Traken who was called Denis Carey was IMO reminded me of Patrick Troughton.

Follow for a long time is an understatement as it's been like almost 10 years right?

The start of (in my opinion) the best Tardis team. And Adric. Lol.
