Tuomas wrote the song when his Father passed. I feel the emotion as my mother passed at 90 years old in 2023. My father passed many years earlier. I can't listen to Lanterlight without tears rolling down my cheeks! Absolutely one of Tuomas' masterpieces. Thank you for your insight!!!

I'm 73 and I am the last man standing in my family. So Lantern Light runs deep, cuts deep. I understand the loss, yet I still live with hope and intent. Nevertheless, Floor's voice and this composition is akin to an emotional depth charge to the heart. There is a tenderness and vulnerability there that I have not heard before, and it just breaks you. And her face, good Lord, her beautiful face so expressive and adorned with nothing save her heart and soul just melts me to my core. The poetry of this song is also heart-rendingly exquisite. It is a poem, a prayer, an elegy. Listen to it. Just listen to it. Tuomas’ poetry can easily stand alone. Some of you get it. Some of you don't. I do, and that's all that matters. Kiitos to all of you in Nightwish for delivering such epic and emotional story telling.

Thank you for these words. I couldn’t agree more. Listening to Yesterwynde is a journey to the depth of one’s soul and Lanternlight is all that you said. Before I listened to the album, I read all the lyrics and the multilayered poetry is exquisite. Tuomas is a gifted poet as he is a gifted composer and musician. Nightwish is a gift to many but especially to those who appreciate its depth on many levels. Kitos to Tuomas and Nightwish, to Floor, Troy, Empuu, Kai and Jukka. And all the very best wishes to you :-)

I know I'm late to the party here, but Lanternlight has become not only one of my favorite Nightwish songs, but one of my favorite pieces of music ever. My parents both died when i was relatively young (dad when i was 10, mom when i was 28), and i miss them terribly but am so grateful to have had them. Lanternlight brings it all back to me, my wonderful parents and the incredible memories i have of them, as well as the grief that still presses in on me. Thank you for your reaction, to both songs. The whole album is just spectacular, though, and you should really react to the whole thing.

This must be the most beautiful amazing meaningful poignant composition ive ever heard. It flows seamlessly from tuomas dads death to the message from his dad then tuomas speaking at the end. I lost both parents in march 2016 and the words and music of this echo much of how my grief journey has been so far. My dad always said we never truly die, we live on in memories, hearts and genetics but most importantly in the messages and teachings we get from those before us and in turn pass to those after us. My dad often spoke of stories he heard from his grandad and ive passed those onto my kids and grandkids. So thats 6 generations (so far) touched by stories told by my great grandfather. ❤

Tuomas calls it a love song (written just after his father died in fact on Feb 4th 2021). The love of all those who have gone before and been lost (a major theme of the album). All the ways in which people live on in nature and all around you. The album starts with the projector (the "magic lantern") and ends with it. That first track has basses who really stand out, almost like Russian Orthodox basso profundo.

Pure Floor. I love this song. Btw, this song was Floor's pick for a single, it made her cry when she first heard it (I had the same reaction to this song, it's so touching). Tuomas lost his father a few years ago and he wrote this song out of that emotion. The message is to enjoy life, as it's beautiful and should be celebrated instead of grieved when it ends. Nightwish is their own genre and no other band comes close to the level they are at. Never, in the history of music entertainment, have a set of skills and talent collided in such powerful manner. Tuomas is a true genius as a composer and with lyrics.

Great reaction! Lanternlight is the most beautiful, soul gripping, heart stringing, fulfilling, masterful celebration for and remembrance of Tuomas’, anyone’s, father ❤️‍🔥 Tuomas is an absolute genius! My father, the strongest man I know and the cornerstones of my entire being/life, passed on cpl of years ago; on the waining hour of my Birthday. He had endured physically and emotionally for over 20 years after multiple strokes and other health challenges. His peaceful passing on was a true blessing; so much so that I had yet to shed one tear; until now! The combination of Tuomas’ yet another compositional and lyrical masterpiece and its manifestation by Floor and Troy finally opened, on a good note, my floodgates 💦💦😭 No amount of Finnish 🇫🇮 inner strength enhancing, emotion blocking, words (sisu, saatana, perkele) could hold back the desperately needed and necessary outpouring of emotions; reflections, remembrance, appreciation, flashbacks, re-lived joy and eternal love. Genuine tears do have healing powers! Tuomas, Floor, Nightwish, “Lanternlight” - ❤️‍🔥and thank you to The G.O.A.T. IMHO, there has never been, there will never be, another Nightwish!

@@doubleohdutch2108 This has been mentioned by various people (quoting Tuomas I believe). I have understood is deliberate, but obviously not everyone likes it. Tuomas has also said that he was in awe of Floor singing her parts so beautifully given the circumstances and they got it done in six days instead of two weeks. Being such a perfectionist, why would Tuomas (and the rest of the band) accept something that was below par in his opinion? He has mentioned he wanted the album to be heavier, and therefore the orchestra and the band play a bigger part.

@@tanjanikola9489 The album is more eclectic than heavy (which it is, but Dream Theater would be heavier)) since we have orchestral arrangements and also (children?) choirs, but the result is very good. The only disagreement I have with Tuomas is that grief and celebration can exist together. And I thank Nightwish for the permission for and musical expression of complicated emotions. Sorrow and quiet joy exist together in my heart when I think about my oldest son who died 4 years ago in a car accident. He was to me, and many others, one of the kindest people we had ever loved and lived with. I am a retired psychiatrist and worked with many people in unbelievable pain who still laughed and cried in equal measure. We taught each other how to be more human. We shared music and poetry as often words failed us, Nightwish was right in there in both artistic "categories". I simply love this album.

Musical maturity is exactly it. The entire Floor era is marked by it. Tuomas has grown immensely as a composer, the band has grown immensely as writers and players, and you can really hear it in their last few albums. Imaginaerum was the start of this growth, and it was a great album, but Endless Forms was a flourishing, and everything they've produced since has been simply incredible. Anyway, hey Doug, have you been introduced to Diablo Swing Orchestra yet? Might I recommend checking out the song "Lucy Fears The Morning Star". Tomas wrote this song not long after his father passed away in, I believe, 2001. I think he said it was the first song he wrote for the album. Then, Floor sang it 6 weeks postpartum, when she was in too much pain to stand. Yes, it is a special song. Not only is it one of the most gorgeous songs that Nightwish (Tuomas) has ever written and produced, but great pain and effort were given to bring it to light. This song, this album, is a masterpiece.

Thanks for your elaborate perspective. The melody of Lanternlight reminds me of traditional Cumbria/Northumberland music. That could well be Troy's influence (he is from Cumbria). You are right about Floor's voice: I could listen to her all day, everyday.

The Day Of… Adults spreading fear to the next generation is represented by Floor as she sings to the children, then she is singing with / alongside the children. This matches a theme from a previous Nightwish song - “Weak Fantasy” Lyrics: “Fear is a choice you embrace”. Lantern Light is so beautiful. 🤍 The first song written for the new album - Written by Tuomas in memory of his father. The film imagery in the video also shows “Pope Leo & it’s the earliest and oldest film recording”. The first person ever filmed. Then, did you hear the Gregorian Chant at the end of the song? (also included in The Greatest Show on Earth (the history of music section). “Gregorian Chant - This style of chanting is not hampered by restrictions of time and measure, and that gives it the irresistible power it possesses over the feelings, as an eloquent discourse carries away the heart. Gregorian music undergoes no change; like Latin, the language of the Church, it is always and everywhere the same”. Tuomas has spoken about having “no religion” but was born into a Catholic background - many Nightwish songs describe his journey through life, faith & religions. Life, timelessness, petrichor, weave, evocative lyrics that interconnect elements throughout this album Yesterwynde (In the lyrics, the videos, the music and even links to previous albums). Tuomas mentioned there are Easter Eggs to be found throughout!! Yesterwynde concludes a triology of the Human/ Nature/ Timeless themes. Listen to the whole album from beginning to end - we will watch! 😊

Doug, you really got this connection between Covid and this song Lanternlight. I can't tell for sure if Tuomas' father was killed by covid in 2021 but I'm sure my father was in 2022. Anyway, your analysis is great.

In incredible album came out and I really love it. Doubled orchestra from back years , arragements from James Shearman , the man at the button of London Philharmonic for their projects and not their orchestrator , Pip Williams, recorded in the studio 2, at Abbey Road Studios in London, that recorded first time Ghost Love Score, with the same man in tge button then. Tuomas went powerful , more epic and more lyrical until now . An example of of the orchestra recorded Yesterwyde album is 50+ strings , epic brass section, doubled than before ( 7 Horns , 2 Trumpets, 4 Trombones , Tuba/ Cimbasso ) , pairs with doubles to woodwinds , Timpani and 5 percussionists , 1 Harp, and the band, and 60 piece choir of adult voices and at big kid's choir. Epic scale project? For me yes . Nightwish forever! And much love to the our Queen. She deserves it❤❤❤

Laternlight was written when Tuomas's father passed away last year. This will be played at my funeral.

Finally someone uses the correct terminology. Tuomas is a composer. He creates pieces of music (not songs) with brilliant lyrics. Great review. Thanks Doug.

Once they come back to stages, it is easy to imagine them turning the Lanternlight to band performed ballad. Also a showcase for Tuomas' piano playing.

The projector sounds are included on the official full album in the first track as a start, and in the last track as the end of the album, like the story throughout the album is shown via a projector. So, it is included on the actual album. Since you like the ochestral parts I can recommend listening til the full orchestral release of the album. It is included as the "2nd part" of the streaming releases (tracks 13-23), at least on TIDAL, and can be found on KZbin on unofficial channels. No vocals except some choir, and no heavy drums, and it's composed specifically as an ochestral piece. Could very well be a movie sound track.

The first minute of "The Day of" absolutely sounds like a Rush song to me. Could easily imagine Geddy Lee's voice in place of Floor's until the first chorus hits.

Yesterwynde is, imo, their best album ever. The trilogy are all great but this one is their best.

The projector get started up at start of album, and gets turned off at the end, and i think it fits qlbum, as the album is a grand journey, from start to finish. The day off.. yes a song as you decribed about fearmongers, and that we should try grab for beauty in life, symbolised also by the coloured rose in video. Lanternlight is written by Tuomas, for hes father who passed away in 2021, its a song about as life fully lived, and passed on to the forrest of yesterwynde.. If you want to know what yesterwynde means, listen to 1st track, and also listen to bandmembers explaining it, my take is that its the secret stream basicly, the memories of all, and the energy in life, and death..and the time itself i could miss something here, but my take on it..
