🚨 Special release! This video was blocked earlier this week, but has now been UNBLOCKED, so we’re bringing it to you today 🚨
In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm listening to This Land by Gary Clark, Jr. As February comes to a close, I'm seeking a powerful conclusion to my monthlong celebration of Black History month, and Gary's song definitely provides it. The song is an outgrowth of backlash that Gary received when he bought his new home outside of Austin, TX...and it chronicles some of what life is like being Black in America. It's a tough message to fully take in, but it's worth the time. Thanks for watching!

It is his house. The other inspiration for this song was a local calling his daughter....I don't think I need to day the word. There's a lot of cool wordplay here, too. He is actually friends with a governor, but in the next line "you can meet my other friend, the Judge" is referring to the Taurus Judge revolver, which is one of the most powerful handguns ever made. I love this song because he went right for the jugular. He was even told at the Grammys to change the chorus, and he didn't. And you're correct about the Native imagery, my wife is Native and picked up on that immediately.

Jimmy Vaughn, Stevie Ray Vaughn's brother, is Gary Clarke Jrs. blues Godfather. Really helped him in the day when he was a young man coming up in the life of a bluesman.

Thank you for taking the time last month to cover all of these wonderful songs and giving them the historical weight they deserve, because, like you said, without it they're all just songs. My parents raised me on Oldies, so of course I knew the tunes from Sly and the Family Stone that you covered last week, but I grew up thinking those were songs to celebrate how things already were, not how they wanted things to be. You've turned those completely on their heads and I never would have taken the time to analyze any of these on my own. You know, if even one of my old music professors was as passionate as you are about sharing the joy music brings you then I absolutely would have finished.

Have heard he lost ‘fans’ because of this song, but if that is their reaction, who needs them! Saw him perform this live in Tampa in 2019, and had seen him previously. Cannot wait to see him perform again! What talent!

WOW!!! That was amazing Doug! Thanx so much for sharing this very powerful and moving song and video. This track will definitely need a few more listens and the video will need a few more views also so I can absorb and process this great track. As you said .... it is so hard to believe that this kind of thing still goes on in the 21st century. We are all in this together and the sooner we all figure out it will be a better world if we all work together to fix the mess we have made. Thanx so much again Doug and keep up the good fight for a better world!

✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽...Thanx4 your BHM selections. Far lower views than the straight rock stuff, so clearly the tribute month is heartfelt. Alvin Singleton is a Classical composer that I find interesting.

Great analysis, especially of the imagery. To think, Gary was warned not to release this because he’d appear as ‘an angry black man’ … that it wasn’t who the record label thought he should be. Smile and take the awards. And really glad you did your homework on that news story, was wondering if you’d know it!

With passing of Wayne Shorter today, May I suggest a tribute reaction to some Weather Report? A Remark You Made from Heavy Weather would be the perfect choice.

I got into Gray Clark Jr about a year before this album came out, thanks to his appearance on Luke Cage (great music on that show). And was immediately hooked by both his talent and variety. You should consider an extended play lounge of part of either this album or Blak and Blu, pick 5 songs and you'll hear at least 4 different styles, Sonny Boy Slim is great but it's a blues album so the breadth isn't mind blowing, everything else about it is though. But I remember when this single dropped. I was so excited for something new from this amazing guy I'd found. And then there was the absolute gut punch that is this song. Woh. It still smacks me around. And I'm glad it does. Thanks for talking about it.

I don't know if you take suggestions from KZbin comments, but I think that you might enjoy some finnish progressive rock. A group called "Tasavallan Presidentti" and the song "Milky Way Moses" from the album of the same name. Other than the group name the songs are in english and if you were wondering the group name translates as "President of the republic".

as a classical composer and fan of metal, id love to hear you react to a band called Haggard. theyre symphonic metal, but go way beyond your average symphonic metal band, theyre basically a small orchestra with classical musicians as full time members of the band, as well as multiple singers, rather than the programmed synths that most bands use. compositionally, they also incorporate more classical, with some passages being entirely classical, as well as parts combining the classical with metal. they do use harsh vocals, which i know youve said you dont reallly like, (although theyre not as harsh as some) but i think its well worth checking out at least one song to hear their sound. i recommend the title track from their album Eppur Si Muove, which is a concept album about galileo. (its got a smaller percent of harsh vocals. and its a really good song.)

Texas has a complicated history with race. But there is no doubt many great musicians have come out of that state. Albert Collins, Freddie King, T-Bone Walker, Janis Joplin and Johnny Winter all born and raised in Texas. Janis was born in Port Arthur Texas. There was an active chapter of the KKK there when she was growing up. No wonder she split for California.

Gary Clark, Jr. was part of an annual late-Summer, music festival, in Nashville, back in 2019. Though Nashville is a heavily center-left city, Tennessee, of course, went for Trump. I’m quite sure word got to Gary, that he probably shouldn’t sing “This Land”, there!

Are you open to consider reacting to a classical work? I've loved your analyses of my favourite rock acts like Pink Floyd, Genesis and Zappa (not to mention Gong who I saw several times), but you're leaving a big gap in my education. Hint: Sunday is the 70th anniversary of Prokofiev being taken from us. Given your usual time slots maybe Overture on Hebrew Themes. Maybe the kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6iwY6SFo893qqc&ab performance. Just a thought.

I come from a totally different reality, from a little country in Europe. I can't understand racism in a country that's supposed to be so advanced. Ignoring the black influence on the world of today is like turning the clock back to an age where music was only the domain of the philistine rich few who employed composers (whom they kept for petty salaries) not for their art, but for the prestige. Art is made where it can be appreciated by all. It is part of the democratization process.

Totally different reality? Take your blinders off my European friend, Europe is full of racism and perhaps even more, antisemitism. It's just that Europeans forget and ignore it. African Americans quite rightly refuse to let the rest of America forget or ignore.
