You mentioned why I prefer classical guitar to traditional electric guitar. You can play entire songs. Finger-style guitarists can also. I just prefer nylon strings and classical technique to steel string acoustic guitars. I love being able to play a solo arrangement of a pop song or jazz piece. It's very satisfying

Classical guitar is very difficult, it is probably impossible to play anything without having some notes not sounding clearly. It is a very hard instrument to play. I listen to the best classical guitarists and I always hear (especially at the faster, harder parts of the composition) notes not played cleanly. I disregard them and I can still admire the technique but I constantly feel tension of 'not making a mistake' when classical guitarists play. Not so with other instruments.

I think it is the word Salon that you were struggling to pronounce in English. The "sa" is pronounced like the start of salad. For the "lon" part the "on" is pronounce like the on in "the book is sitting on the table". You speak excellent English, but salon is not a word used very often, so it makes sense that you might have difficulty with it.

@@beatrixguitar That is true. The origin is French, and in French the pronunciation is a bit different from the English pronunciation.

I'm not so sure. "Saloon" actually means "public room".... it does NOT automatically mean "bar" in other words. One of its uses is in yachting... the yacht will have a "saloon" which is the proper nautical term ,and is the gathering area for the crew, but yactstmen tend to convert that to "salon" because it sounds less blue-collar and more elevated.

Classical guitar is underrated for several reasons but at the end it only shows the ignorance of society or people. To being with, the most famous composers (Beethoven, Mozart, etc) never composed something for guitar but mainly for piano, violin, cello etc. Then, in our modern world, guitar is mostly associated with rock, folk and in the best of the cases jazz. So for many people guitar means strumming and singing. All this has contributed to this ignorant idea about guitar. However, when you show to this people that basically all that can be played on piano (classical or whatever) can be transcribed to guitar, in many instances, even more beautifully, then these people are in awe. Moreover, you can transcribe anything to guitar and the results are unbelievable but most people are ignorant about it. Paola Hermosin, an amazing classical guitar player, has shown over and over in her videos the amazing versatility of classical guitar. In my opinion guitar is in many cases the most worderful and difficult instrument, even over piano. But thanks to these channels this wrong opinion about guitar will change sooner than later. For those who have doubts, just check Bohemian Rhapsody by Steve Bean in classical guitar. Your mind will be blown out from this world. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. Check Paola Hermosin channel (for instance her Zorba the Greek arrangement or the William Tell overture) to have an idea about the infinite possibilities of guitar not to mention the beauty and enormous complexities of the instrument.

I kind of agree with that first comment, the classical guitar can be a little soulless and not emotional as it hasn’t really got a lot of resonance and sustain to express the music with. It has a tendency to sound intimate but can also be dreary and boring.

The Classic guitar (nylon guitar) is not popular in English based Western countries, but in Spain and Latin America (and some other parts of the world) is the main musical instrument. You find it everywhere you go!
@bluebirdsigma
@bluebirdsigma 7 ай бұрын
Also it must be said that in these countries, it's played just like a steel string acoustic guitar, for everything, not in the orthodox classical style for the typical repertoire. It's just "the guitar" for us in LatAm, in contrast to the electric guitar. Not many people are even aware of the steel string acoustics.

Hello ! I'm the person who made the post about classical guitar being underrated and I would like to add something that i should have said in my original post. I wasn't speaking specifically for classical music , but for music in general. For example , when a band/artist wants to play a melody ,let's say Metallica on Nothing else matters, they will always use the acoustic guitar and never the classical. Why is that ? Am I missing something about the acoustic guitar that makes it so great compared to classical (I know that the acoustic guitar has more frets )? Is it because the acoustic guitar is more famous in North America so my whole post is pointless?😂

How did this comment get missed? I’ll reply to you lol I think it boils down to what sound you want. Every instrument has its place, regardless of popularity. So it was seeing my uncle play a rendition of Nothing Else Matters on a steel string acoustic guitar that inspired me to become a musician. I started on guitar, and yet that quickly became my secondary instrument, I’m a pianist first and foremost. And I can play nothing else matters on both instruments. What does it sound best on? Acoustic guitar for sure. In fact, I recently bought a Hartwood Sonata Fx, it’s an electro acoustic with a preamp built in speaker. Touch of reverb and chorus effect and strings tuned just below standard E, but not quite Eb, and THAT sounds exactly like the studio recording. But take other pieces. Take that Asturias, or Cavatina… they sound perfect on the classical. Even though the acoustic has more resonance, the tone is just not right for it. The classical guitar won’t be used much in modern bands etc because of volume. And that’s how it might seem underrated. It’s less known to the average person

Guitars having one coloured string could indicate the player has learnt that not all strings are equal. The properties of the string, its tonal character, intonation & tension are individual to each string (6 strings). So, some sets of strings may give great results on five strings, but one string is consistently problematic, no matter how many sets you buy. Most players put up with this, but the perfectionist looks at other brands, other chemical solutions. Some have found a single string made from sugar fixes the problem or perhaps composite string. I tried flamenco strings from a well known brand which have composit 1st, 2nd & 3rd strings and they are black. I disliked them and chose classical string high tension by Augustine, for my flamenco and they play very nicely. By the way, Some manufacturers of repute make them in ruby. Prof Ruben Diaz of the contemporary school of flamenco music in Malaga, also online, has a lot of knowledge and experience regarding strings and has influenced how strings are produced.

Not underrated, the problems are repertoire and technical purism. It is rare to hear something that is neither an Em reshuffle of some old Em idea nor "modern" music. And I mean "technical " in what concerns liberal use of amplification. Of course, instruments would have to be built with that in mind. And don't worry, the hair is looking good!

I only can agree, I used to think that classical guitar is superior because of the harmonic complexity……. Well I was young and naive for sure 😅 although I understand that we want to play keys and chords that fit the instrument comfortably so we can focus on the voicing and phrasing and such. Tough topic but definitely something worth talking about!

Flamenco is more improvisatory in nature so the concept of a "song" (or more correctly; a piece) like a solidified work of art is less important, and while the original comment about "playing" the first four chords probably meant the most basic strumming, flamenco incorporates a vast repertoire of different strumming techniques and most complex rhythms, in addition to the usual classical picking techniques and pulgar and picado. It is true that you don't need many chords to take off, but it's not really a proper metric of the difficulty involved. Modern (postmodern) flamenco has heavy jazz influences so all the complexity is there. Then again, I don't call that flamenco.

@@syntaxlost9239 I'm aware that it was a jest, but I took the opportunity to put some information out there anyway! I come from a "classical background" (self-taught on piano) and listened to almost exclusively western classical music for about a decade. I discovered ethno music at some point and finally flamenco by accident, and nothing quite speaks to me like it. Have fun, and don't injure yourself!

I moved to classical because I found all of the rock / hard rock stuff so boring, and really repetitive. For me, classical guitar opened up a whole new world of music I haven't heard in a way of playing guitar that is so expressive with so much variety in tone and dynamics. It may not be popular, but even here is Australia we know that it has a core of enthusiastic and passionate supporters (many of whom are players of various levels) and the whole scene is doing ok. I've been to plenty of rock gigs with 20 old guys watching....

You really overestimate the effect of a well designed concert hall and really underestimate the effect of being within 10 feet of the person playing. Sitting outside in an intimate environment you hear the guitar very clearly and at a nice volume. In a concert hall you get less of the first pass of sound waves because you are farther away than 10 feet. You get the slap back from the walls, and that can add SOME volume, but it is out of phase with the first pass and is delayed. So it makes the sound muddier and less clear. In a well designed concert hall made to seat say 2000 people you might have a full second of reverb and about a 50% increase in volume vs just the first pass. But by sitting 20 feet back from the instrument you have lost twice that in total volume vs someone sitting right next to the instrument. I have been in concert halls. I have played in them. People always overstate how much their design helps make unamplified performances audible. No, you cannot hear a whisper from someone on stage while seated in the back row. If you stand in just the right spot within standing waves nodes, you can get someone else on the other end of the building also hear a whisper... until they move a few feet this way or that. Y'all are not nearly as loud as you think during performances and everyone behind row 10 is getting a subpar experience.

Funny, I find a large room or small chamber hall with a live acoustic works well for decent classical guitar performance. When I play classical guitar I get people who are not used to the sound liking the warmth of it. Most around here are used to electric or steal string acoustic guitars. Nails - we don't need no nails where we're going. I play no nail as I prefer the sound and working close or further away from the bridge can vary the sound as required. For me, nails just sound harsh. Obscure instruments - Viola soloist. Would love to do some small ensemble work with folk down the track but then, just as happy plugging in the classical guitar and working with electric instruments too. Horses for courses but at least I got sound if the power goes out.👍😁

Underrated is mostly used as ignorance, or lack knowledge, and seldom int it's literal meaning as in rating the quality of something. Overrated is mostly used as overexposed, lack of critical insight/tecnical insight, therefore something or someone gained too much attention or credit for what it really is. I think the whole everything is subjective view is a load of bs though, there are certainly objective metrics you can rate art with (although subjectivity can not be entirely avoided). Augustin barrios was a better guitarist and played superior compositions than Ed Sheeran ever did or is ever able to, for example. That someone prefers something over the other, there you enter the realm of subjecitivity for the most part.
