I feel honored and blessed to have witnessed this remarkable interpretive dance by Liesbeth. She taught our group so much , about this ancient art form that contains so many secrets of the universe.
From Liesbeth:
Dance is the heart and soul of India. No worship, no public or private event would be auspicious or complete without the presence of dancers and the performance of dance. Dancers dancing would accompany the Gods in procession, the bride and bridegroom to their new house, the ambassador to the king.
Indian dance comprises of two intertwined forms: Abstract geometrical and rhythmical patterns and movement, as well as storytelling, through the use of meaningful hand gestures and the expression of emotions. Rasa, meaning juice, taste or essence, transforms human experience into a transcendental event through the medium of dance. The dancer is the conduit. The stories told are of the gods and heroes, the ancient kings and the many dramas from India’s long past.
Dance as an art form finds its origin in Shiva, the Divine Dancer. When Brahma created Drama from the essence of the four Vedas, Shiva contributed dance to this new art from his Tandava, the vigorous dance of Cosmos. His consort Parvati added the Lasya, soft feminine movement. And dance was then introduced to humanity as part of drama. Over the past few thousand years Indian dance has evolved into various regional styles. Bharata Natyam is the form which evolved in the last century from the temple and courtly dance traditions of Southern India. Liesbeth Pankaja has been an exponent of Bharata Natyam for over thirty years.
