In "King's Speech", the Beethoven was used in several ways; it was a steady, slow rhythm that he could follow, it was psychologically steadying to him when he was speaking while stressed, and finally, when he delivers the entire speech, and the theme is allowed to develop the way Beethoven wrote it, it helps show the scope of what the King has just done.

For me, the award for most beautiful soundtrack moments goes to LOTR. However, the award for the soundtrack that best adapts to the various moments of its movie has to be Star Wars. Most action movies just blast the main title theme whenever the main character shows up or does anything remotely interesting. John Williams just weaves the character’s theme into whatever music he has already established for the scene. The Star Wars soundtrack tells the story of Star Wars, with all its emotional nuances, almost as well as the actual movies.

Don't get me wrong, both are extremely solid. However, the lotr theme adapts and evolves even better to the story. Not only are the themes used to portray the thematic elements, but they also evolve with the plot. For example the theme for the fellowship becomes grander the more people join until it bursts into its complete form when the fellowship is fully assembled. Star wars has some good themes, however, at least in the later movies they have become more and more superficially used.

Completely agreed. Obviously, it's a comedy video so it doesn't "matter," but the rankings are meaningless when Lord of the Rings gets an auto S because "the whole thing is amazing" and Lion King gets reduced down to "Circle of Life" and Titanic to "My Heart Will Go On." Both movies have amazing hour+ long scores. The Lion King score is absolutely some of Hans Zimmer's best work ("This Land", "Stampede", "Under the Stars", etc), and Titanic's whole schtick is being "all borderline cheesy" music for the first half so it can absolutely crush you with its sinking ship score in the second half ("Hard to Starboard", "Death of Titanic").

He created this Symphony concert that compressed the musical world of Middle Earth into a two (three?) hour production, and started conducting performances all over the world.

I think I would personally just rank one soundtrack higher and that's definitely Your Name for me. I agree the piano is repetitive in the beginning but I think especially the beginning of the song is more focused on the singing. To me it just perfectly fits the mood of the movie and the piano in the beginning just does all it needs to do and that's to support the emotions created by the movie. Also the song has more orchestral parts later on and for me personally it just has the perfect balance between focusing more on the singer and slowly integrating a full orchestra. So at least for this movie I wouldn't know what other film music I could ask for because whenever I listen to it I feel the emotions of the movie again :). I'm up for other opinions on this though.

I really would have liked to know your thoughts on the Dune soundtrack. It's so far from traditional "western" orchestral music, but it fits the scenery soo well. Part 2?:)

I'd rate the Dune soundtrack as S-tier. The textures and sounds that Hans Zimmer and his team created with the film sound design team are just fantastic and truly iconic. Denis Villeneuve really brought the best out of everyone in the crafts category. All their Oscar wins were so well deserved. Just too bad Villeneuve didn't get nominated, he really should have been nominated when all of the craft teams did such a great job bringing his vision to life!!!

I really like the main theme and the love theme of Cinema Paradiso, one of the greatest film themes by Ennio Morricone and very Pleasurable to hear whether it is by Orchestra or by any other arrangement. I really liked Ma Youyou and Chris Botti's interpretation of this piece of music, and although the jazz part is quite unorthodox and I didn't like it at first, but when the Orchestra joined in with the cello during the love theme at the end, it really is heaven to my ears! Really agree with Lord of the Rings being S tier because of its quality. Howard Shore really is a musical genius! Some of its theme songs, such as "May it Be" also take the movie to the absolute top tier. All in all, great video!
@mep19902 жыл бұрын
I was a bit disappointed that Ennio Morricone got only one entry, and they rated it only B. To me, Ennio is an S tier, compared to John Williams and Hans Zimmer, who are A tier, Morricone is a much more refined and original composer.
@centeura14352 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree, never knew that they had such low standards, Ennio Morricone is the greatest composer in the cinematic world for sure. They seem to judge like a bunch of kids that watch anime all day and listen to radical chic music

Star Wars should be S tier. The amount of motifs and themes used through out the original triligy and prequel triligy alone is astounding. It would also be cool to seem them rank individual pieces from the films too.
@kathyo.62172 жыл бұрын
This would be cool. Take a few movies or television series and rank like 5 or ten pieces per franchise.

Funny that they used the Prequel poster art and as much as I LOVE Duel of the Fates the rip-off of Dvorak’s New World Symphony is pretty obvious. Still magnificent.

They did a video on movie music that was blatantly copied from classical composers. Almost whole video is full of Williams work, with evidence on how he stole his music from Stravinsky, Holst, Tchaikovsky, Dvořák... Watch it. No dear, it is not an S.

Cinema paradisio (1989) score is by Morricone. (Main theme actually by his wife) How on earth would you not have it in the S category? Im deeply offended. It’s one of the most memorable scores in the last decades.

For Lion King, I definitely think it should be higher up for that one soundtrack where Simba has the vision of his father reminding him who he is. The music swells so much and the amount of emotion is just insane.

The thing about Howard Shore's score (LOTR ❤) is that he really worked closely with Peter Jackson and developed the music together with them shooting it. Of course, I'm glad you put my personal favourite composers up (a lot of John Williams, Joe Hisaishi and Hans Zimmer) ❤ Great taste, you guys, you are not banished in my eyes 😁

Just want to point out that the composer for a lot of iconic Ghibli films was Joe Hisaishi; Miyazaki was the film maker.

Can you do video game composers? Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy), Yoko Shimomura (Kingdom Hearts), Jesper Kyd (Assassin's Creed), Jeremy Soule (Skyrim), etc. I've been to a few live orchestras that play video game music and it was stunning.

Maybe I'm just driven by my childhood memories and feelings but i think Lion King is one of the best works of Hans Zimmer. It is epic, it is catchy, it incorporates african folk vibes quite well, you cannot not love it. I listen to that soundtrack very often even nowadays.
@neolithics69022 жыл бұрын
Interesting take, especially since it's from a mostly musical/technical perspective. My ranking would be vastly different since I've seen most of these films and would tend to judge the music and the film together. Say I'd place Cinema Paradiso at a higher rank because of how it intensified the bittersweet emotions of the film. Some film scores I'd also rank highly because of how effective they were as cues to a character or situation, so that they've become characters themselves (e.g. Psycho or Jaws). Though yes, I think we can all agree LOTR is defo Ling Ling tier :)
