My name is Josh. Subtitles:16 languages. I was not prepared for what Tatiana can do. I've never seen a female vocalist do that with her voice. It was a powerful performance and the guitar part was awesome! I look forward to more Jinjer reactions. Thank you for your support.

This was fantastic to see you running into Tatiana... Some facts about this: there is no processing to achieve this voice, there are only some doubles and some slight tuning for the overall sound. This video was meant to introduce the at this time relatively new drummer Vlad a little bit more and this version is a little bit revised in arrangement and style by him and they liked it so much that they made this video. Later they regret a little bit to call it "Live Session" because even its a live sung version in a studio there is some minor post-production what is now mentioned by a lot of reacting people. Tatiana had never vocal lessons, only some when she was around 8 years old and she got bored by this. She is able to switch between clear and extreme voice from one line to the next and back and can reach even a much deeper extreme voice than in this video. Tatiana calls this one of her most personal songs, she is a Pisces and in this video she has even a plug in her right ear tunnel with a fish in it. Tati said when she has problems with her voice it is easier for her to use the extreme voice than sing higher notes in her clear voice. There are all 4 fantastic musicians, a fact that often missed because of Tatis voice. In before corona times they made 150-200 live gigs per anno. Live they are unbelievable, there energy on stage is beyond compare. If you want to see more there are two primary suggestions: "Perennial" live at Wacken 2019 (---> kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKnMZJxvrN-EeM0 ) and most recent a one take recording of "Judgement (and Punishment)" (-----> kzbin.info/www/bejne/h2bVmJJsaLibp8k ). The one take of "Judgement (and Punishment)" is perfect for reactors to see what shes really doing and how effortless and seamless she is able to switch. Go on with your great work, I love the way you are also going into the vocals and I am always perplex how short your pretty long videos feel because there is never a boring part in it and your honest admiration for other singers makes them fun to look. Stay safe and healty, best regards from Germany!

Her sound is real, no effects (except of layering two recordings at some moments, low and high pitch scream) She is just using her false vocal cords. The mic adds to it, because it gives a lot of amplification, so actually the scream does not have to be loud to bring the effect

Fun reaction - subbed. I've been fortunate enough to see them twice and they are even better on stage. This is one of the few studio videos you'll get recommended for them. Like Nightwish, their concert performances are where it is at. And from what folks who are in the industry have said there isn't much that can be done to alter vocals like this live, especially when mixing them with cleans. Plenty of studio recordings of both male and female growlers have the growling vocals lowered in pitch, but Tatiana goes even lower in live performances of various songs, and sometimes in parts of Pisces as well since she does the growls differently in every performance. Perennial live at Wacken is of a similar level of heaviness to this and with lots of great clean vocal technique - though no belting in that, she switches even faster and there is an impressive held note sequence. Judgement & Punishment one-take vocal performance has great belting and is brand new, which is significant because Tatiana's technique is always growing both in cleans and growls - she does make a small error early in it, but it is still incredibly impressive. Not an expert, but from what I understand there are two main ways that sounds like that are made. One is using extreme vocal fry, but she has said she's not doing fry screams and the way she describes it (that she feels like she has "two throats" one for cleans and one for growls) sounds like false cord growls. She is self-taught and says she doesn't really know how she does what she does, she just went with whatever worked that didn't hurt her voice, so until she has someone do endoscope video we won't really know for sure. The best way I can explain false cord growls is that the vestibular folds aka false vocal cords close the throat against exhalation. If you try to breathe out while releasing that closure, you'll make a bit of sound. It is a matter of spending months learning how to control that sound to produce words, and then years perfecting that control to be able to sing with it. There are quite a few women using this technique, though Tatiana is imo the best. I'm not biased at all haha. Floor hasn't specialized as deeply into growls but does use the technique occasionally for example Yours Is An Empty Hope. Spiritbox's Rule Of Nines one-take vocal performance video is a good example of another band who does a great mix of cleans and growls. Otep Shamaya does both too and was one of the early adopters of the technique among female vocalists and inspired Tatiana to sing metal and learn to growl when she was 15 - I'd recommend Ghost Flowers off the Confrontation live DVD. Angela Gossow of Arch Enemy is an OG female growler with demos going back to 1991 and arguably even more beastly with her false cord growls than Tatiana though not as flexible with her growls but doesn't do cleans - We Will Rise live in Tokyo from 2008 is a good example. Alissa White-Gluz the current singer for AE doing Nemesis live at Wacken is a good example of fry screams. The band that paved the way for female growling was Kittie starting in 1996, don't know when their singer started though and haven't found anything by them that makes me feel like I have to recommend it specifically - I feel like the industry wasn't ready for it and their stuff is kinda toned down compared to Angela and Otep, and the later female growlers.

Check out Perennial Live at Wacken or Judgement and Punishment One Take. Both are fairly straight mics. It’s all her. I think it’s a false chord tone she’s using. That’s why she can go from growl to clean with no problem... because she’s not really using the vocal chords for the screams.

This is a one-take live session. No effects apart from a slight doubling in the verses, but not the chorus. It's entirely natural. A few more fun facts - she's 100% untrained, she doesn't practice, she doesn't warm up, she drinks and smokes. Yet her technique is absolutely perfect. Tati is just an anomaly. They are from Ukraine, so Chernobyl may or may not have something to do with it...

This is actually a re-recording of an older song, specifically to show off their (at the time) new drummer. So this recording has proper post production polish done to it, like doubled vocal layers in some parts, but if you are asking if she is making the actual growling sound, then yes, yes she does - she's using her vestibular folds, aka false cords for that. Her throat is actually completely relaxed for this, Kardavox Academy has a video going through this song, explaining the technique in more detail with some live examples, but it is basically a completely separate vocal technique to learn and master, where you kinda let the vestibular folds flab around freely. I'd suggest you try Perennial Live at Wacken next, which is more true to a proper live performance with just subtle mixing, but I will also drop my usual starter recommendations in case you want to dive in deeper. Official video suggestions: Teacher, Teacher Perennial I Speak Astronomy Pit Of Consciousness Judgement & Punishment Cloud Factory Retrospection Sit Stay Roll Over Live suggestions: Perennial live at Wacken Who Is Gonna Be The One live On The Top live in Kiev Pit Of Consciousness live in Kiev Judgement & Punishment live in Melbourne Teacher, Teacher live in Melbourne Sit Stay Roll Over live in Melbourne

Hey Josh, I'm not classically trained in singing, just a garage band in the 90s. Watch her head. She positions it well. You'll see she tilts her head forward to help open up the larynx to go deeper, and she probably squeezes her throat tighter for the higher notes. As for the growling, it's not as loud as it sounds. You'll notice she uses the mic very well, getting closer during the growls, so she's actually quieter. And yes, it's all vocal fry. They added a few effects post production and probably another guitar because the distortion fades while he's back to playing the clean - amazing guitar riffs, btw, especially the last one - added some flange or phase to parts of her vocals and some doubling, or just reverb. It's nothing too amazing she's doing, she simply does it very well, although I will say I think it IS in fact amazing that she doesn't wear out her voice - vocal fry can be done safely and I'm she's doing it, but after a full, long concert, I'm surprised she can still sound clean when she wants to. That part is amazing, but the rest is just years of practice.

So, that is her actual voice. It's done by growling using your false cords. To see how this is done, basically think of making the sound of a gorilla or a grunt. Your not using your vocal cords at all. If you do, you would damage them. So, basically imitate cookie monster. You form the sounds of the words with the placement of your tongue and the positioning of your soft palate. She is also probably the queen of this style. So, don't be too surprised by her skill at it. The only effects on her microphone by the way is a slight delay. Also, this 'Live' recording session is actually a re-recording of the song using a new drummer. So, you will hear post production vocal dubbing.

"...you'd think other was a completely different vocalist." That's what I thought when I listened Jinjer from CD, and of course I didn't read the sleeve and honest to God, for days I thought that "oh, they have two or three different singers, like Amaranthe". Then I watched a video and my head exploded. And I am no stranger to bands like Amorphis or Opeth which have vocalists who transition between growl and clean, and also I like female growlers like Alissa White-Gluz so the concept was not alien to me...but the disconnect between her 'different voices' is just so extreme that it's almost unsettling even for someone who knows the genre.

That's all her. From what I've learned about her. She spent 4 years developing the technical ability to do that without destroying her voice.

welcome to JINJER! many thanks for your intense REACTION TO THE SONG, and also for the lyrics, Tati all writes herself. And besides all 4 musicians are world class. I'm listening to music since about 50 years, and I myself be a musician in different genres, IMO this band is one of a kind!!!!!!!! Maybe you can do next "JINJER - Perennial (Live at Wacken Open Air 2019) | Napalm Records" and a newer upload: "JINJER - Judgement (& Punishment) - Tatiana Shmayluk - One Take Vocal Performance" many greetings from germany and stay safe!

Having the lyrics read off like poetry. Niiice! For me, "Teacher Teacher" is always the next step.

Tatiana is awesome!! Besides her beatiful clean voice, her growling technic is amazing, i must say she growls even better than some male singers, and supported by a great guitar, amazing bass and powerful drummer, and of course the lyrics (Tatiana writes the lyrical part) you will find more great songs, example: - judgement & punishment (live-one take) -waltz (live beastiarium - on studio) -cloud factory -retrospection (official video) -outlander -on the top Etc, etc.
