Since we know she did not get famous for her dancing or her visuals...she made her mark purely through talent and her emotion driven singing. Her "breathy" technique is what makes her songs intimate and absolutely breathtaking to listen to. Different countries have different preferences, we just need to listen with an open heart.

Classical singers are (most of them) too "strict" at their knowledge. Sometimes I feel sad thinking about how some of the guests can't feel the song and the passion because they're "searching" for mistakes or "seeing" from the "classical thecnic side of the window"
@ivanjonahcarpio21386 жыл бұрын
To be honest, she's not at her best at this episode and I personally did not like the approach on the notes she hit at the start but that does not make me a lessee fan. Her blending with the contestants were good but the classical vocalists were too busy analyzing the contestants' capability that they ignore IU's skills at blending with these three guys at the same song.

you shouldve stopped at "i dont know anything about singing" bc just bc someone is the nation's lil sister doesnt mean theyre incredibly great at singing technique wise. people just love iu's voice color and her songs but her technique isn't all that special. obviously people have different preferences ( on the vocal color ) but at the end of the day what really matters is the technique someone sings since that could fuck up ur vocal chords if ur doing it wrong
@sarah13pink6 жыл бұрын

The thing is, she IS incredibly great singing technique wise. I'm sure you'll be able to find a "vocal coach reacts to iu" or something on KZbin. She is literally known as one of the best female singers in South Korea, if not the best. I don't think you can achieve that by just having a unique vocal color. She has an amazingly powerful voice, maybe not seen in this video, but again, just KZbin it. IU has been singing for years without having problems with her voice and she has been trained professionally, I don't think you need to worry.

Breathy singing doesn't always mean it's well supported. Singing should involve the whole body, and when you sing with just your throat by producing a "breathy" soft sound, you don't have that. We're used to that style of singing because it sounds nice in pop music where you're recording and have a mic. Whispery singing is kind of like a cookie; it's sweet and delicious, but not always good for you. Without proper technique and support to produce a soft volume in a healthy way, you could damage your throat. Obligatory: it's all personal preference based off what kind of singing/tone/color/style you enjoy. This is just my opinion coming from years of chorus + my personal taste. Enjoy the music everyone!

I have been a fan of IU for years. She is definitely not a great vocalist but she truly is a good singer. Fantastic Duo is a program where the artist picks the contestant who will join him/her in the last round. Thus, the one that the artist will pick may or may not be the best vocalist among the contestant. Most of the artist picks the person they can duet with. If you'll watch the video, you'll know the reason why she pick the security guard, it's because he and IU can blend together and create synergy. I agree that technically, the cook is the best among the three but this is Fantastic Duo, not a competition among vocalists. The cook has a powerful voice that may drown IU's voice, hence the choice as both the guard and IU has this whispery sound. IU is a singer-songwriter, she knows what she is good at and she probably knows her weakness. She is most suited with jazz that's why her Modern Times Album was truly exceptional. By the way, the song in this round, "Dear Name", is co-written by IU, it has a beautiful lyrics and is rumored to be dedicated to the victims of the Sewol Ferry incident where many people/youth drowned and died. Hence, the song is somewhat saying that there name will not be forgotten. I also agree that the taekwondo girl is technically good. She is even technically good than IU. But again, this is a program where the singer chooses who she can create a good synergy. IU is a singer who can touch your heart, especially with her lyrics and her emotions. Again, she's technically not a good vocalist but she will always be a great singer in my opinion. I love her writings and compositions. 😊 All else considered, I love the reactions. As classically trained vocalist, I did expect the reactors to react on what they know and what they are good at, thus, classical training. The reactors did well on that area. 😊

Yes breathy singing can sound nice to some people, it's a preference. It shouldn't be used when ones vocal techniques aren't developed, it's a stylistic choice meant to be used by experienced singers. ^^
@ashablue786 жыл бұрын
TheTappss yeah but every genre has a different kind is singing. There’s a reason why R&B singers don’t sing like Classical singers. There are definitely some things in technique that are universal, but some are made for stylistic choices
@TheTappss6 жыл бұрын
Asha Blue yes, I definitely agree that they are stylistic choices made by the singer, but my point is that the whole series (in my understanding) is about these guests analysing proper technique in singing (not classical). And, in the past, they've appreciated singers with good support and clarity in voice. A few singers in this performance video don't have those skills which are necessary for you to be called a good vocalist (not artist, performer, singer), and that's why they are pointing it out. I thought that their job was to analyse the singer's techniques irrespective of the genre that's being sung (I know it's impossible to not consider the genre, but I think basic techniques of breathing, intonation, articulation is used in all genres of music). And, I think they're doing a decent job...
@rententobi38526 жыл бұрын
TheTappss the thing wrong with that is that breathy voice is legit the style of the song. Other of her songs are different.
@ainrsttt6 жыл бұрын
Well well... I love IU above anyone else in the music industry. She's queen in my heart. I love her, genuinely. BUT, in that song, she does use that "breathing technique" a lot. It goes with the flow of the song. If you want to hear proper technique, listen to other songs who don't have this ultra-sad vibe. In Dear Name, at the end, when the song climaxes, you can clearly hear her voice using proper technique. What I love about her is that she's actually able to change her voice depending on the vibe of the song/moment. Best exemple is Dear Name : You want all that technique, powerful and strong vocals ? Last chorus of Dear Name. If you want something very emotionnal, expressing deep sadness, weakness, that's the main vibe of the song. If you listen to Ending Scene, she uses this breathy technique as the song is really sad, expression almost despair. She even makes her voice crack at a particular moment in the song to express how heart broken she is. IU is not only a good and strong vocalist, but she is also good at conveying emotions. And also, most vocalist tend to restrain their abilites on this show (because otherwise you're considered as rude to show off in front of amateurs). So people should also take that in consideration.

@richardhague8016 жыл бұрын
these people are actually 'being' trained - they are 'in the process' of studying music and they will continue to learn long after their formal education finishes. learning the best way to draw a straight line doesn't make you appreciate art, learning the correct ratio of ingredient in a recipe doesn't make you appreciate a taste. these guys argue that professionals who make artistic decisions are wrong (not specifically in this video but throughout this whole series) just because they're learning one discipline in an educational environment. In my experience (and I've been connected to the music industry in my country for nearly 2 decades) professionals tend to raise up their fellow artists rather than criticize their work. judging IU's artistic choice of who is best to compliment her in a duo as wrong, and even going so far as to say IU would have been in last place for vocal ability is immature and rude and a prime example of how ignorant some of these 'students' are.
@minak61696 жыл бұрын
Richard Hague The series really isn't that deep. It's only a KZbin channel which they do for fun and clearly they have a lot of support to do so. The entire concept of this channel is to give their unfiltered views rather than sugarcoat to pander to the audience. If you want a reaction channel like that then there are plenty out there that would suit your tastes. As a fan of IU I find no issue with them saying any of this as they are entitled to their opinion, whether or not they've finished their education.
@richardhague8016 жыл бұрын
yes ofc they're entitled to their opinion, i'm just pointing out that it's from young music students some of whom believe they're experts which is a what this channel plays off of. The whole premise of this channel is that they're students of a prestigious music school viewing the pop music of another culture and compared to other reaction channels this is deeper than most. Plenty of these reactors recognise and point out the things that set kpop apart. They're amazed at the different approaches producers have to music from the west and they praise creativity and ability ...and then there are those that don't. Those that offer insights into what makes kpop unique are the reason I'm here, I don't need to be shepherded off to other channels thanks.

ONE person did and she did say later on that IU has a ''gorgeous'' voice. It was out of annoyance really that is shared with most of us on how IU ditched taekwondo girl, who freaking slayed. But I get IU's reasoning for it. People are allowed to get annoyed. I love IU but I could understand the girl's comment. I actually like her opinion because she comments on the technique of each of the voices too and she does hate the breathy style singers do sure, but she gave a justified and technical reason for it. She said her preference is when IU actually closes her vocal chords from air so she can actually hear her sing. Its not like she just slagged IU throughout. Everyone was frustrated here because we're all human after all so its hard to stay neutral. IU is my bae but I still think they had some rational arguments here and it all comes down to preference. IU is surprising to me bcz i prefer more alto- singers like Lee Hi and Taeyeon but I still love IU who may not have the same range as them but she can still hold her own cause her songs allow her unqiue voice to shine even more than theirs do sometimes. Compared to Twice's video, this is pretty constructive. Although I understand their reaction Twice - who I dont hate but Im not really a fan of bcz I dont like excessive aegyo. Another reason as to why i like IU so much bcz she hates being forced to be excessively cute too. Id prefer an artist who connects her emotions w the audience than an artist who perfectly knows about singing but w no sincerity.

4th prince So that’s completely subjective, I respect your opinion, but this is classical vocalists react, which means they are trained... it was obvious they would point out their techniques

I just wanna say the point of this show is to find which voice suits IU's voice the most, NOT who sings the best. I know her voice might not be too powerful and sometimes be criticized as well. Everyone has different opinions, which makes you guys distinct from other reactors. But for me, i'd prefer listen to her moderate but deeply emotional voice rather than powerful but emotionless one.

They're missing the point of the show!!! It's Fantastic Duo!!! IU is looking for the best one to compliment with her singing. And the song..... it's supposed to be emotional and IU's style is intimate and perfect for that. They don't know anything I'm upset :/

I have a whole ass music degree and everyone but the guys in the red and green shirts were decent. Y’all are pretentious and rude af. This is why no one fucks with vocalist. They should know how the dynamics of this works and IU isn’t going in because she is listening. Dude. Get off your high horse.
@kenchedaroy2 жыл бұрын
just saw this video, and I was like...duh? do you even know the context of the song? the show? I mean yeah, you're more on the technicality of the singing part, but I guess singing is not all about technicalities...your reactions just show how different IU is compared to other singers. She's a great singer. She sings with her heart.

I'VE BEEN READY FOR THIS SINCE LAST YEAR!!! IU AND HER FANBOYS, SLAY! NO MATTER WHAT THEY SAY. 💜💜💜 p.s. Not a fan of this reaction at all to be honest because they seemed harsh towards non-classically trained performers/fans, but to each their own.

She really isn't. IU still has issues in properly supporting her notes, instead constantly opting for a breathy unsupported sound. This is not good for her voice and can damage it in the long run. Sure, it sounds nice but her technique is still poor.

1. The security guard sort of looks like Eric Nam. 2. Why did the camera cut to Psy? Is he a special guest judge or something? 1A. EDIT- nevermind. I guess that basketball player was there too. 3. Does this video demonstrate that "good singing" is completely subjective? How can none of these groups of classically-trained vocalists trained at the same school agree with each other?

@takoyakai72116 жыл бұрын
Han Ng Since this is a competition, IU was going against Psy, that’s why he is there xD and also the “basket ball guy” aka Seo Jang Hoon was there as part of Psy’s supportive team. And the way from I see it, the different pairs of reactors weren’t looking at the video in the same mind set lol. One pair were focused on stage presence, another focused on solely the voices, and a pair that looks at who’s going to get chosen for the last round.

I don't know what technique is supposed to be wrong or right. She sings this song in many different way i think by the mood or music arrangement like in the Melon Music Award she sang it emotionally but powerful which is different from this stage. If you have time I would like you guy to check it out. Anyway I still like how she sing because I can feel what she wants to express to the audience. Ps. Thank you for making this content. I still like to watch it ^ ^
@SnowCrasher6 жыл бұрын
Please be aware that Fantastic Duo is not about picking the person who sings the best, but the person the main singer wants to duet with the most. The voice has to mesh well with the singer and also their performance/vibe/emotion should be in tune with each other. They only have very little time to practice once they are picked, so it has to be someone that can also handle the last minute arrangement. Also, they tend to pick the one that would fit the final song the most. They could sing the first two songs perfectly, but might not be suitable for the final duet song.

Because that's the point of the show? Lmao. This show is called fantastic Duo. It's to pick someone who can blend well with the singer's voice because at the end of the show, they will compete with the other guest singer and his chosen contestant. They are not justified for being angry. It's Umu's fault for not giving context. This isn't to choose the best contestant, it's to choose the one who will best complement the singer's voice so they can win over the other singer-contestant pair.

Good techniques and voice isn't enough to make people listen to music. Hope you know that. I understand that you are a musician but, hey, you should know that when you sing without emotion, no one or less people will listen to you. I also don't understand why you are being harsh on her? She's not in her good shape when she attended this show and FYI, the show and PSY, convinced her a lot of times just to be on the show, she's not IU for nothing. The comment is very rude, this is a reaction video, but it's below the belt. Hearing those curse words, make me think if you are really a musician or just some kind of dude who unintentionally heard a kpop song then throw some shitty word, cause they don't understand the song. I feel like their opinions got swayed immediately because of their previous picks. The comments weren’t as constructive but rather dissy with no respect to other singing styles. Breathy vocals is not a sign of vocal weakness but rather a tool to show emotions. I came here for the usual educational classical music input but rather just felt uncomfortable from the close-minded comments. Super disappointed.

honestly, kpop stans... can't hear criticism from people who understand what it is to have a good singing technique that they go berserk. breathiness in singing isn't good for your throat/vocal chords so even if it's stylistic and for emotional purposes it's still damaging and hello! these are classical vocalists who are judging vocal skills and in the end they have an opinion and different preferences but above all they're classically trained and have a pretty good idea of what they're talking about
