Great to hear the sounds of Tiger Stadium. Ernie was practically sitting right over home plate with nothing but a net in front of him. His seat had to be the closest vantage point in the majors for a broadcaster.

Excellent sound quality on this particular recording. No better baseball broadcast team than Ernie Harwell and Paul Carey (and don't forget their engineer Howard Stitzel!) Great to hear Ernie giving birthday greetings at 6:50 to the Mechanical Man Charlie Gehringer.

As a 12 year old boy in Detroit I was obsessed with this team. This broadcast is perfect. Thank you.

Oh gosh this is beautiful. I'll come back and listen to the whole game soon as it's past midnight in Columbus, Ohio. I would always listen to the Tiger games on WJR 760 after the Reds games during the 70's. Ernie Harwell is the best baseball broadcaster I've ever heard and I heard many during the 70's. Loved Mr. Paul Carey also and also Ray Lane before Paul.

Listening to Detroit Tigers radio broadcasts in Chicago meant WJR after sunset and Kalamazoo's WKZO for day games. Varying degrees of static depending on the weather was always involved. Always did this whenever my Orioles played against the Tigers.

A big game for "Banana Ben" Oglivie. The Detroit Tigers have made many, many good trades over the years, and a few real clunkers. Their trade of Oglivie to the Milwaukee Brewers for P Jim Slaton following this season was in the latter category. Thank you so much for posting this gem!

A belated birthday present for my girlfriend Carolyn! (Her birthday is May 11 which of course was yesterday.) That was the same day the Angels hit 3 consecutive home runs in a game--Bobby Bonds (yes, father of Barry Bonds) was one of them! May 11, 1977 fell on a Thursday.

Tigers should have never traded Ben Oglivie as the upper deck in right at Tiger Stadium was his friend. I remember seeing Frank Tanana’s Tiger debut vs the brewers in 1985 and the only hit he allowed was a smash off the 3rd deck by Oglivie. I remember it like yesterday

Not to shame a legend, but Ernie's trivia question at 36:48 has a flaw, in that his subject actually had eight 21-win seasons. We'll see if this gets rectified in the broadcast.
@JohnSmith-op1tc3 жыл бұрын
Paul presented the right answer, no follow up to identify the 21 win seasons, (Ernie said the total is seven, again) for that hurler who retired to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
