The pitchers got the ball and threw it again within a few seconds. This game was about 2 hours long. Unimaginable today.

Wow, great quality, Allen at around the very start of his legendary sportscasting career (he's perfect for this game because he actually started broadcasting regularly in both leagues - Giants and Yankees home games - starting around 1939 ) but where is his trademark "Southern" drawl?

Even though he retired a week earlier Lou Gehrig was included on the roster for this all star game so technically this would be his last game he was on the roster for even though he did not play.

Interesting that it was Arch McDonald who nicknamed DiMaggio "the Yankee Clipper".

Myril Hoag wore a size 4 shoe on one foot and a size 4-1/2 on the other?? (52:05) Incredible! Did they size shoes differently then? When I sold them in the '70s, I think size 6-1/2 was the smallest men's size "in the run." Hoag would have been swimming in them!

Interesting. Did not know they originally rotated umpires'. positioning at the ASG after four-and-a-half innings. They don't do that now. Also, interesting that the appearances of the pitchers were apparently pre-arranged and announced by the managers in advance. subject to change of course, and pitchers (unless the game went into extra innings) were apparently limited to three innings. So while they may not have had pitch counts back then, they sure did have "innings counts!"

They only had "innings counts" in the ASG. The starting pitcher was only allowed to pitch 3 innings.

Poor Joe D ended up at only .381. But Mel Allen was right, Hank Greenberg ended up at .312 and Joe Cronin .308.
