Clay would enter with a record of 18-0, Henry Cooper 27-8-1. Henry Cooper had wanted to face current World Heavyweight Champion Sonny Liston, but his manager, fearing for his fighters safety against a monster like Liston, would not pursue it. Instead, they accepted the challenge of a young arrogant boxer named Cassius Clay. This was to be Clay's first fight as a pro outside of the United States and his last fight before beating Sonny Liston, becoming World Heavyweight Champion and changing his name to Muhammad Ali. Cassius Clay held little respect for Henry Cooper going into the fight. He claimed Henry a bum, and if he could not beat him in 5 rounds, he would not return to the USA for 30 days. Henry was only a warm up to the brash Cassius Clay. Henry Cooper's record although not great was respectable and he was the reigning Commonwealth and British Heavyweight Champion with 19 of his 27 wins coming by way of KO and most by way of his devastating left hook known as "Enry's ammer". Late in the forth round the young Cassius Clay was floored by the aforementioned punch and saved by the bell ending the round. Although Cassius was able to get to his feet, he was noticeably wobbled and the break between rounds was desperately needed. For Cooper however, it was too little too late. His face a crimson mask, cut wide open from Clay's repeated jabs with a torn glove, the referee had no choice but to end the fight in the following round when Clay turned up the heat. Clay's prediction of a 5th round KO had come to fruition but also a new level of respect for the veteran British boxer, 1 of only 3 men to ever drop Clay/Muhammad in his 61 fight career.
Interesting side note, 3 of the 4 knockdowns Muhammad Ali suffered during his career came by way of a left hook to the jaw... Sonny Banks, Henry Cooper and Joe Frazier. And 3 of those 4 fights in which Ali got knocked down, he went on to win... Chuck Wepner, Sonny Banks and Henry Cooper.

When he came home a week later he said 'uncle' Jimmy kept his hamsters in his pocket and he taught him how to walk like John Wayne, which he did for weeks afterwards, the show off he was back then.. @David McFrost but if you watch Lewis, Joshua and most of those boxers you mentioned have learnt a lot from Ali. They all Stick and Move ( Jab and dance ) even though they could never perfect Ali's movements they still learnt a lot from him . Play Ali Liston first fight and watch Lewis fight they all learnt one thing from him STICK AND MOVE. Only after Ali did people adopt this Technique. Before that people fought toe to toe in a straight line. When I watch all these boxers , I see a lot of Alice movements in them. Yeah and he also said Ernie Shavers is the hardest hitter he ever faced and he also said Joe Frazier hit like a truck and made him feel like he was dying and he also said Ken Norton gave him the toughest 24 rounds of his entire career. Ali was that kind of guy. He always spoke highly of other fighters including the night Foreman fought 5 men in one night. They were all average at best but Ali complimented each one of them as really good fighters.

Not exactly. The transatlantic satellite picture (relatively new in 1963) distorted the physiques of both fighters. In the first four rounds, Clay chose to fight Cooper straight up and in close, not moving much at all to his left or right. Bad strategy. After the knockdown, Clay got serious, peppered Henry with the jab, keeping him at a distance and eventually ending the fight. This fight reminded me of the two Leonard-Duran fights. In their fist fight, Leonard chose to slug it out with Duran and lost. In the rematch, Leonard moved a lot better, using his speed and jab for more often and more effectively, frustrating Duran to the point where he said 'no mas.' Against Liston, Clay kept himself at a distance (Sonny had an 84" reach), moving superbly to his left and to his right, using the jab to great effect, against a fighter who could take him out with one or two punches. Clay split Liston's face open and that forced Sonny to quit. Clay didn't take Cooper seriously, however, he had a great deal of respect (understandably) for Liston.

E lo ha dimostrato nell' ultima ripresa dove ha stracciato Cooper (non un pugile qualsiasi). Ali' in carriera (anche nel suo momento di declino), non ha mai perso per Ko: nell' incontro contro Holmes (tra l' altro gran pugile!), non c' era Ali' sul ring ma un uomo malato che non e' stato colpevolmente fermato poiche' non era piu' in grado di combattere. I primi segni del Parkinson erano evidenti ma Ali' faceva mangiare in molti e lo hanno dato in pasto ad Holmes che conoscendo Ali' per esser stato il suo sparring partner dopo la prima ripresa si era subito accorto che qualcosa non andava nel suo avversario e si e' regolato. Ma Ali' aveva ancora un grande cuore ragion per cui non voleva smettere. Non si manda mai un uomo malato su un ring: mi meraviglio che quell' incontro sia ancora oggi considerato come un incontro regolare. Ali' finche' non si e' ammalato non ha mai perso per Ko: questa e' la verita' (nemmeno nella sua fase di declino e nemmeno non essendo piu' al suo apice dopo il ritorno dal carcere). Avrebbe potuto chiudere la carriera di 18 anni pugilistici con solamente 2 sconfitte ai punti contro Joe Frazier e Ken Norton se solo l' avessero fermato prima e se non l' avessero fatto combattere da malato di Parkinson. Un record secondo, solamente a quello di Rocky Marciano (imbattutto). Purtroppo lo hanno spremuto fino all' osso: e cio' gli e' valsa l' etichetta di pugile poco potente. Non avere un pugno singolo da Ko non significa non essere potenti: Ali' aveva combinazioni da Ko. Il primo Ali' ha vinto quasi tutti gli incontri per Ko: il secondo, era un Ali' depotenziato e meno potente con una grande astuzia, intelligenza tattica, meno mobilita', meno velocita' e quindi meno potenza ma con grande resistenza e un grande mento piu' il suo talento innato. Cio' gli e' bastato per dominare anche negli anni 70'. Senza il carcere, avrebbe ottenuto piu' Ko a suo favore (che comunque non sono stati pochi in carriera). Tuttavia, anche se si fosse ritirato quando doveva farlo (in quanto non doveva dimostrare piu' niente a nessuno!), Ali' non avrebbe potuto evitare il Parkinson: forse, (sottolineo, forse), la malattia sarebbe andata meno spedita ma la malattia non e' dipesa certo dalla Boxe come tanti che non fanno sport da contatto e che sviluppano lo stesso il Parkinson. Per me dopo Ali' il piu' grande pugile e' stato certamente Mike Tyson nel suo prime ma per la durata della carriera dico Lennon Lewis (per me, superiore a Tyson o, almeno al suo pari nel periodo del primo Tyson). Precedentemente, oltre a Marciano inserirei J.Lewis e Liston. Foreman, Joe Frazier, Ken Norton e L.Holmes tra i piu' grandi ma non sui livelli talentuosi dei sopra citati: idem per Holyfield. Almeno fino ad una certa epoca: oggi, parliamo di un' epoca completamente diversa con piu' tecnologia, maggiori integratori, alimentazione ancora piu' curata, stazze diverse, ecc. Clay was boxing and toying with Cooper in the first 4 rounds. You can go back and look in the 3rd round he was teasing Cooper, and the announcer said he was ungentlemanly. He was gettin in his head. Cooper's lucky Clay hit em in the face so much and got his eye gushin. The ref stopped the fight to save Cooper gettin knocked out. You can say what you want, but there wasn't nothin easy about this fight. They both boxed well, and had a great fight, but Clay came on strong in the 5th. That knock down got em motivated in a major way, and you could see play time was over. I just went back and watched the 5th round again and counted the punches. Clay threw about 37 punches to Cooper's 6 punches. And Clay landed almost every one and Cooper didn't land any. It was about a minute and a half in the 5th round before the ref stopped the fight, and clay landed about 35 punches and Cooper didn't land one punch. I'm tellin you, the ref could see what was comin, and he stopped the fight to save Cooper from gettin knocked out!!!

Cooper's cut changed the dynamics of the fight. Up to that point, he had the edge and was getting the better of the exchanges. He never got enough credit for his ring craft. He had a good reach, decent jab and lethal left hook, with a solid amateur background. There was no doubt Ali was the greatest of his generation, but during his prime, no one gave him a stiffer test than Copper. RIP two timeless legends!

What most people never appreciate was that Cooper wasn't really a heavyweight by today's standard. He only fought at around 13 stone or around 182 lbs, so he packed quite a wallop for his weight.

Had Cooper got a chance to challenge the champ Sonny Liston before Ali did the following year, he would have had a great chance to beat Liston, who was in decline at this time (1964). Internationally Cooper was/is very much underrated. Unfortunately he got cut so easily and therefore lost some important fights, he otherwise could have won, at least on points.
