Mike Jameson was our pest control guy who serviced a building I used to work at in San Jose, CA. Dude was super cool and humble. I knew him for about 2 years before he casually told me he used to box during a conversation. When I asked if he had ever fought anyone that I’d likely heard of, to my surprise I learned he went 5 rounds with Tyson in 1986, the longest anyone had ever lasted with Tyson up to that point. Just goes to show, you never know what people’s past experiences are. Either what they’ve accomplished, or what they’ve been through and survived.

I asked him and he told me he did and at the time it was the longest Tyson ever went. He told me a funny story. He asked if I remembered Frank Bruno and I told him yes. He said got a call from his manager if he wanted to take a short notice fight in the UK against Frank. Now mind you this was before social media. Tysons hand speed was absolutely ridiculous for a heavyweight. This fast, quick twitch tyson imo was the best HW specimen there ever was in the history of boxing. And what the world didn't know at this time.of his career, was that his stamina was superb, and his chin was made of iron. In these early fights, approx his 1st 20 to 25 fights, he seemed to be just faster paced and on a fuckin war path.

And had he not married Robin, or went with Don King, he probably would have never wound up in prison (thus depriving us of what should have been his prime years from 24-28), and continued to take the sport seriously. He would have been unquestionably capable of beating Holyfield, Bowe, and Lewis.

@brucescott4261 Tyson has no one to blame but himself, he allowed those snakes in the grass to infiltrate his circle. Tyson had little self discipline and mental toughness imo, he needed guidance. That's what his original Cus/Rooney/Jacobs/Cayton team gave him. All he had to do was soak up knowledge and skills being taught to him. Team Tyson was made up unqualified men who did whatever Tyson wanted to do. If Tyson didn't want to train hard certain days, rather go out and about, chase p#ssy, etc, we're they gonna tell no, absolutely not. Tysons conditionin and elusiveness were immediately affected by making up his own team and cutting ties with the original team. He was not the same, if people cant see that they are blind. But I agree, Tyson has no one to blame but himself. No excuses.

Jameson was able to absorb some serious punishment. Also, this earlier version of Tyson was such a well-conditioned student of the sport. Physical stamina much better than he is credited for, an iron chin, and he was patient here. Used mostly body punches until about round 4 when the head started opening up, and Mike himself showed no signs of being tired. I still contest that we never got to see Mike in his "prime." Had he kept his corner instead of going with Don King, he would have remained a hungry student of the sport and would have hit his true prime about the time he (instead) showed up hungover against Douglas and subsequently went to prison. He may still have lost some fights in his career eventually, but he definitely would have been capable of beating Holyfield, Bowe, Lewis, Morrison, and Foreman.
