The phone rings at 14:23 and 14:57, and Hayato's sensibility to introduce the sound into his arrangements shows he is a piano and musician genius.

in my humble opinion, this is what a performance of rhapsody in blue should be: A wild mix of classical and true jazz.
@yukio-s22226 ай бұрын
It's wonderful that his music and cadenzas are not for the purpose of showing off his skills, but simply for the enjoyment of the listener. I would also like to give my deepest praise to the maestro and the orchestra for their sensational performance. Bravo!!!!!

I've heard many fine and great pianists over the years, but Sumino stands as one I've never heard before. He somehow mixes spontaneous improvisation seamlessly, without missing a beat, back to the main flow of the score. Pure gold ! And you can see he was caught up completely in the sheer fun and joy of playing Gershwin !

6:36 Melodica appears 8:38 Melodica leaves Mr. Sumino and all the players seemed to enjoy the fast tempo of the music. This Rhapsody in Blue is a historical masterpiece !!!!!
This is EASILY one of the best interpretations of Rhapsody, in my honest opinion. Cateen and RSNO were all equally on point. Soloists within the orchestra were immaculate. And I never tire of seeing that spontaneous cell phone duet. (the timing of that going off during the last piano cadenza is something else, and his response was just pure class AND dignified poise.)

I am very partial to the bernstein recording where he both conducts and plays piano as it introduced me to the piece but this one might just top it for me.

@@eliasbachner1898 Fair. I dislike the Bernstein interpretations, because of the further cuts made to the piece - so I prefer it when Rhapsody is played in its' entirety, like here and many other versions (including the original jazz band arrangement from 1924). I'm partial to performances of the original jazz band version, but same

@@dukeofrodtown1705true, but the interpretation of Bernstein’s was more classical. However, the interpretation here is more jazz+classical with jazz being slightly more overpowering.

I’ve NEVER HEARD anyone play this piece LIKE THIS. I used to not like this piece. UNTIL I saw this performance. IT’S JAZZ!!! Maybe that’s why I didn’t like it before!!! Everyone else “CLASSIFIES” it! Meaning they make it sound classical. I heard this piece for the first time thanks to Hayato. Now I have a new appreciation for this music. 😊

It’s a very rare experience for me that Joy brings tears in the middle of a performance! Hayato personifies music and rhythm, he’s purely natural. The conductor and the orchestra worked magnificently together as one! Congratulations!! Oh and he reminds us that the Melodica can be the centre of attention in the Royal Albert Hall!

Gershwin would be grinning ear to ear!! I have a special place for Rhapsody in my heart because I played clarinet for years. I was born with a cleft lip and palate and managed to become quite accomplished. However when I turned thirty I had a revision surgery done and was unfortunately unable to recover my embouchure. I sadly had to walk away. I’m blessed to have made it as far as I did!

I can't think that it isn't a coincidence that the melodica was used as a reference to an old japanese anime called "Nodame Cantabile" on classical music. The students wanted to give a Jazzy sound to the piece by using a melodica in the anime. With this smile on his face when he took the melodica. I can't believe that he was not referring this specific moment. I might be wrong, of course. But I like to believe that it was the case.
