My office mate at Atari, Judy Bogart, wrote this. I helped a little (mostly we just talked about how to implement some of the game's features, such as the "killer color" used for collisions and some of the update logic). She did a great job.

The twin Atari 2600 controller adapter enables two controller use with the 8 bit computer...works great, sound is good and it is fast. The Atari Lynx, & 7800 versions are also pretty great.

The Robotron 2084 port for the Lynx is also a pretty great port of the arcade version for a handheld.

Pretty sure you can use two Genesis arcade sticks like you can for the 7800 version. Placing the two arcade sticks on a flat surface, like a TV dinner tray, would be more enjoyable than wrestling with two control pads on your lap.

Mark do you like this version more than the 7800 version? This version still looks fatted like the 5200 version.

This is great on the Atari 5200 too. A rare occasion where the horrible 5200 controllers actually made something better! They even made a joystick coupler to hold them in place, very nice.

I really want some of those atari 7800 game pads...they released those in Europe, while in North America, we got crappy controllers instead. The only version that is better and that is not emulating the Arcade roms is the Atari 7800 version.

You should duck tape or screw two Atari 2600 joysticks together and to something flat like a wooden board so you could use both joysticks to play this game just like in the arcade and not have to hold both controllers... That way it's easier and better and much more enjoyable! Or you could just play Super Smash TV on the Super Nintendo instead... Just saiyan =w=

Guywhosayswisestuff I don't doubt it really... But well, the Super Nintendo could have a perfect port, or superior version of it, that I guarantee! And the Super Nintendo controller makes it even better with the diamond configuration ;3 16 bit Robotron for the win! If only it was made for the SNES...

So is the XE version better than the 7800 version?
@MrRetrogamingBard
@MrRetrogamingBard 9 жыл бұрын
The way I see it, the 7800 is atari's ultimate oldschool console since it can play both 7800 and 2600 games. The XE is atari's ultimate oldschool computer since it can play every Atari's computer game cartridge (to my knowledge). I say it's a tie yet I'm just more familiar with the 7800... but wanting more games for the XE system.

whats better, 7800 or XEgs? They look pretty similar..
@retrogamerfamily
@retrogamerfamily 7 жыл бұрын
hehe, sorry I wasn't more specific. I was speaking specifically about the Robotron game, but your comparison of the two systems was very good. Despite the intent of the question not being about the systems themselves ironically I am actually wondering if I should pick up a XEGS or an atari 800 at some point in the future, I am teetering on it though because I have a C64 and there is a lot of overlap gamewise. I also have an Atari 5200 which is basically an 8-bit atari in console to some degree itself.

I don't know if you've gone and bought one or not, but it's not a lot of difference between the 800xl and the XE. The 800xl is more compact and takes up less space. You can buy some cables for composite output for the 800xl. The XE has composite built in. Some games will not run on an XL or XE and you have to have a 400 or 800 for and here's the list: www.atarimania.com/faq-atari-400-800-xl-xe-what-programs-run-only-on-the-400-and-800-models-and-why_68.html However, it's not very many. There are games that have more colors on the XE than when played on the 800 XL (David's Midnight Magic is an example). I have both and I leave my XE hooked up and the 800 XL in a box for back up (if that tells you anything).

This does seem like a cool version of a great game. Did the Atari XE have a good version of ET on it?

I know, I know, but that's what the Atari XE could've done to redeem the Atari name. If they made a great E.T. game for this, they would've been celebrated in story and song. Still looks like a good system that didn't get much attention though.
