Classic Game Room reviews EXERION 2: ZORNI for the MSX computer from 1985 from Jaleco and Toshiba. Exerion II is the sequel to Exerion, an old school shooter like Space Invaders, Phoenix or Galaxian.

MSX Rules! Mad collector of said system right here :) Definitely one of the better MSX 1 shooter titles, one I keep near the machine to play in fact.

It’s not the only sequel to Exerion, either! Jaleco followed it up with Exerizer, released in American arcades as Sky Fox by Nichibutsu USA. It’s like Exerion, but with bizarre women riding dragons and stuff. Exerizer/Sky Fox is easily one of the strangest 80’s creations.

Can't wait to see some Konami cartridge game reviews for the MSX. That's where the true gems are. I dare say those games had music that beat any other home game systems hands down. Especially when the SCC was involved.

OMG, I remember playing this game! Although, it was the Arcade version. I only recognized it because of the bird-like enemies at ~3:15 mark...Mark.

The MSX 2 games will make you eat those "jerky scrolling" words, mark. Also i think one of the reasons why MSX games are a bit rare is because cassete and disk drive games were quite commonish for it.

The MSX 2 still can't do smooth horizontally scrolling though. Good thing I liked vertically scrolling shooters better, back in the day. ;)

Irondome It can, but its a bit kludgy. The MSX 2 have a "vertical/horizontal tv adjust register" that allows to shift the whole picture up to 8 pixels to the left or up. And certain games like space manbow and higemaru use those with some well timed fullscreen tile map update to deliver and smooth bidirectional screen scroll (higemaru delivering that at 60hz). The problem is that you get a bit of pop in on the screen corners, but nothing serious.

Actually, just to correct, its 8- to 8 pixels on horizontal/vertical picture adjust. It's on the register 12h of the VDP.

You should get Exed Exes for the Famicom, if you love games with X in the name. Or maybe the arcade game? Although that was called "Savage Bees" here in the west, so... yeah.

I did not know it was savage bees here in the us. Its in capcom classics collection on my vita..but on there its called the original name.

I get what they were going for, but the graphics look really wonky to me. It's like you're playing a verticle shooter with a behind-the-player camera, and the jerky animation of the ground does not help.
