Star Trek the Motion Picture was Paramount's 1979 lackluster answer to 1977's Star Wars. For the first time the crew of the Enterprise arrived on the big screen and confronted V'ger, a giant space-something-or-other heading towards Earth! Watch out! Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Sulu, Uhura, Scotty, Chekov and numerous nameless ensigns piloted the brand new Enterprise into battle against a model surrounded by cotton balls and fake spider webs. The result was about three hours of some brilliant filmmaking mixed with a terrible script and some bizarre outfits. The result was a unique Star Trek film that doesn't quite fit with the series. Star Trek The Motion Picture the video game for Vectrex has little to do with the movie at all, in fact it has more in common with Star Wars. Players shoot Romulan and Klingon space ships with a laser cannon, refuel shields at a space station and fly through black holes. Smooth controls and vector graphics make the game fun and playable, although very repetitive. Fans of old school space ship shooters should enjoy Star Trek on Vectrex because of the old school gameplay and fun Star Trek overlay.

This review could've been about 1 minute long. But it's 9. Why? Because Mark went on his amazing rants again. The rants I have grown to love. The game itself became a mindless color in the background as Mark told us about his idea for the greatest Sci-Fi movie ever. This is why we love Mark.

I'm amazed that those graphics are 30s old. It's really smooth. btw, R2D2 WAS in the new Star Trek, floating amongst space debris (serious!) The new girl Uhura is nice, but Nichelle Nichols has so much class, and is a completely different league

This is one of the sickest first person space games I've ever seen. Someone needs to make the Star Trek 7: The Wrath of Mecha Godzilla a home brew title on the Vectrex.

I love how in retrospect, throwing the Star Trek writer in a room with Jar Jar Binks is pretty much exactly what wound up happening. Mark is confirmed a prophet of our time.

It seems like they sorta revived this game in Godzilla: Save the Earth because there's an underwater minigame with Godzilla 2000 with this kinda gameplay and you fight a submarine at the end.

Somehow good that the game was called "Star Ship" in Europe. Being from Europe I realized first much later that this ought to be a Star Trek game. But once you know it you realize the klingon/romulan ships and even the starbase. But I'm not sure if this is sufficient for a real Star Trek - feeling. However: it was a great game for its time. Clearly one of the best on good old Vectrex!!

Actually Mark, R2-D2 was in the Star Trek movie, it was in the scene where the Enterprise was entering the debris field. Apparently the special effects guy was one of the people from starwars and tossed it in as an easter egg.

Great review, i love your knowledge of star trek, i love it myself, the scene in the motion picture, when the shuttle flys over the enterprise, does go on for too long, i never saw the new star trek movie, though.

The only Star Trek I saw was the new one that came out recently. That was pretty cool, although the enemy was a little lame. He seemed like a pirate more than anything else. Since when could a pirate challenge the Galactic Federation or whatever. Anyway, it was still good, looking forward to the sequel.

I agree this has nothing to do with Star Trek The Motion picture other than the sweet over-lay lol! And you asked what the heck the movie was about? I believe V-ger was the mother of the borg... think about it. A machine collecting mass amount of info and merging with flesh of man. V-ger probably headed to the delta quadrant where the planet of living machines probably rejected and tried to destroy v-ger. Having his urge to improve v-ger's self the borg began....

Vectrex rules. And don't worry. Paramount's made it clear that the new Trek movie occurs in a separate continuity that doesn't overwrite the old one. After all, they want people to buy the Trek MMO, which is set in the old universe.
