The *default* cables that come with a PS2 are analog. You can find a digital set of component cables fairly easily, and assuming your TV supports that connection it removes the analog aspect entirely. Now, that doesn't get around the fact that most games are still going to be displayed in 480i, but even those games get a benefit from non crap cables.

My favorite PS2 controller is the wireless 'Katana' dualshock... basically just a standard Sony controller but runs on AA's.

While I agree that a quality tube like a Sony will look good being analog on analog with the old consoles and native resolution, I do prefer a quality LCD over them. Most LCD TVs have a 4:3 480i mode which helps and have better color saturation. And don't forget that most games made pre-PS2 era were less than 480i resolution and would be upscaled on a 480i tube anyway. Why some look so blocky. And it helps to get the best cable type for your console too.

Hahah, try Touch My Katamari :) But yes, the Vita needs more love. Surely in the future it'll get it. Sony has been focusing on the PS4, and it's already a fan favorite at the moment, so after it comes out I guess they'll be able to focus on advertising Vita games better. I hope so, at least. The system has the potential to be the best handheld ever made, and it's right THERE, but they don't know what to do with it.

Yes but widescreen was entirely up to the developer and was really mostly seen near the end of the console's life time. The fact that SOME HDtv's display the ps2 'fine' doesn't ignore the fact the great majority of games on PS2 were developed to be displayed in 4:3 screens which are mostly seen in old tvs. I think the point I'm trying to make is that the fact that there are some exceptions to the rule doesn't undermine that most of the library of ps2 games will look better on an old tv.

Yeah I agree generally speaking. Granted, even on old CRTs, PS2 via composite wasn't the best either. I always opted for s-video or component if my old tv could support it.

I think he means the fact that the ps2 uses analog cables to connect to the TV and since the aspect ratio it displays at is 4:3 it just looks better in the old tv's than what it would in a modern widescreen display.

Some CRT TVs simply don't have scanlines like that, I don't know why. I've recorded (but not uploaded) quite a few videos of my CRT tv with not even a single scanline.

Don't mention it. By the way, playing Soul Sacrifice by yourself severely gimps the experience, I can assure you that. So it's a shame you couldn't get to see the strength of the game. Also, what I meant by checking out is looking up some gameplay videos to see if it's your kind of game. You could do that, but I'm with you on the trailers thing. They can be very deceptive X)

PS2 supports widescreen displays actually. Not all games do obviously as some are strictly 4:3. Gran Turismo 4 for instance can be played at 1080i resolution via component and the Ratchet and Clank games after the first one support 480p widescreen. Some HDtv's display SD content fine. Others don't so really I wouldn't think playing a PS2 on an HDtv as being blasphemous.

Consoles such as the PS2 aren't analogue* - only the video output signal is, which is converted from the console's digital video signal, so there is some latency involved. Compared to a system with digital video output (PS3/360/WiiU) connected to a digital TV, there's more latency with a CRT. * an example of an analogue console would be Pong!

Hate to criticize Lord Karnage, but this review was incomplete and irresponsible. - What is that button below the red light at the center top left of the controller? - Why did you not test that controller on SOCOM II US Navy SEALs? That is what such a pink controller is for! For stone-cold operators thoroughly confident in their masculinity to mercilessly kill foes with a pink controller. Please make a follow-up review to address these omissions.
