Joe Garagiola said it can't be a fluke for the Rangers to be in first that late in the season. Alas, it was a fluke. Texas plunged from 1.5 games ahead of the White Sox to 22 games behind at season's end, and they followed that up with consecutive last place finishes in 1984 and 1985. They finally won a division title and made the postseason for the first time in 1996.

Rangers ended up under .500 this year with only 77 wins. The White Sox won the West with 99 wins. That means the White Sox must have been kicking some major butt after mid July of 1983 if they passed up the 1st place Rangers.

Exactly 35 years to this date I wouldn't mind going back to that date but I sure would miss my computer.
