I spent two days on set as an upright bass player in Hank’s Band for this film. We filmed at the eerie Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles where Bobby Kennedy was assassinated!!! In the end, the director wanted us all clean-shaven, but the pay wasn’t worth my cutting off my mane!!!🦁 Needless to say our scene was cut from the final production. Still, it was a hell of an experience!!!

Thanks for the movie. I had not heard of hank Garland only chet Adkins who is considered greatest of all times I believe hank garland might just beat him never knew who wrote the sugar foot rag as the musicians he was jamming he was just an all around awesome musician

I hadn’t heard of him. I wonder how factual this is? Lots of great music. Interesting how he played in two camps of musicians, and he was not going to see a black person as anything but equal. As someone else stated,,, ahead of his time. All the great artists are and they walk a fine line. Wonder who took care of his daughter? Great flick.

You never hear of the men or women who make the music, he was a good man, that guy didn't have to date the man's wife that is nasty, a wife should never put themselves out there like that she should have gotten a job, lots of wives look at old photos before you married them and act that way, it is only the past that we have before we became a family. I really liked the movie to see him let that black man sleep in his house because there was no place around town that would let a black man have a bed, the wife with an attitude about it.

An incredibly sad story for such a talented man. Women can be every bit as evil and vindictive as any man, he deserved so much more. And the music executives, at least back then, and probably now, are as unethical and ruthless as they come. I could listen to this mans guitar playing all day long.

The Byrdland that they're talking about at 1:04:00 is a real guitar, made by Gibson for Hank and Billy. It's one of the finest electric guitars ever made. You MIGHT find a new one for around $10,000. The cost is much higher for a good condition older one.

Waylon's mother is the late great singer Sammi Smith (Satin Sheets) and daddy was Jody Payne drummer for Willie Nelson's band for many many years....Waylon's godfather is Waylon Jennings....Hank Garland and Billy Byrd designed and built the guitar known today as the "Gibson Byrdland" one of the finest guitars ever made.
