My English teacher bought me Alice in Wonderland in this edition as a goodbye gift, when I was nine or ten years old. It's really my most beautiful book ; I would read it with awe as a child. So glad we still find such beautiful editions today. You have a fantastic collection, congratulations !

That cover art really is gorgeous, I've never really looked at these closely. I tend to prefer Everyman's library, or Oxford world classics (if translations are good). Can't wait to see more of the series!

Great review! I absolutely love these for all the reasons you mentioned and am cognizant of the negative (thin paper, small, a couple are abridged, etc,) but for the value/prize these are pretty awesome! I’m in my 50s and have a daughter and a little niece that are bookworms and can totally see myself passing these on to them at some point…just adorable collection

I have been collecting Collector’s Library put out by Barnes and Noble in early 2000s. I also love small books and they were very affordable. I believe they sold to MacMillan and rebranded them. They are very similar to original except for cover designs. Also prominent color was red cloth bound with red ribbon. It had a silhouette of a schooner as part of the old brand. Love them and still look for them used.

Love those old Collector's Library ones so much! Many a long night poring over the tiny print was well worth it just to have each book in such an aesthetic edition

The Secret Garden is one of my absolute favorites too! I finally read Sherlock Holmes about 2 years ago, and they are SO GOOD! They don't really read like classics, other than the setting. They feel like they could have been written in modern day. Just really good mysteries with fantastic characters. I've read most of them now.

Thank you for sharing this collection with us! They are beautiful editions. I appreciated the look at the contents and font, etc. I had seen them at a bookstore before and they aren't to my taste due to the small size. I collect the B&N paperbacks and the Penguin Black spines - I like that they aren't precious so I can throw them in my bag, I like the art on the covers (mostly), and I like the font size and paper (and I don't feel guilty highlighting or annotating). For my absolute favorite books, I also collect a hardback edition if I can find a nice one that is just to page through and not to highlight or annotate in (like the Rockwell Kent illustrated Moby Dick). I can't wait to see all the rest of your collection, I just love looking at people's books. :)

LOVE the Tess book. Although that quote makes me cry every time. "Which do we live on--a splendid one or a blighted one?" "A blighted one."
@cassiopeiathew74062 жыл бұрын
The thing about The Age of Innocence is that half the plot happens behind the scenes, part of the value of the book exists in its reread value because you can trace this plot. It’s possibly the best example of how Edith Wharton works in subtleties, one of the benefits of it being only about 350 pages is that it’s not the biggest commitment to reread in order to find the details and symbolism that Edith Wharton hid in the book. It’s definitely not for everyone and for people that go into this book without knowing this at first it can be such a slog (I know from personal experience), but if you are looking in the right places when reading this book it becomes apparent why it’s considered her best work. I also want to mention that I love your channel, it’s such a great source for Russian literature info and recommendations which was helpful because I was very confused and intimidated by Russian Literature (I assumed it was very difficult). Have a great day!

I haven’t got any of this beautiful collection but I think I’m going to have to get one soon, the choice of which one is such a difficult decision though! I love that the New York library stamps the book, my local bookshop Blackwells in oxford stamps them as well, I think it’s such a wonderful thing so you remember where you got your book. I’m always searching for new places to go that stamp the books you buy :)

Lovely collection! I just got my first Macmillan book- Gaskell's North and South last month and I found the font too small. I was disappointed to realize that because I absolutely love the cover illustrations and gilding and the lovely blue. Thanks to you I just ordered some of these gems myself. My only mild concern regarding the Macmillan Collector's Library edition is the fact that some of the published novels are abridged ( the Count of Monte Cristo, Les Mis, The three musketeers). Does anyone have a list of the unabridged/abridged novels in this edition? I want to read them but if they are shortened i would prefer buying the penguin black classics or the oxford classics ones

If you could see what a classics selection of 40 books looks like in french or german, maybe you'd be surprised. Or any other language for that matter. Some of these books would never find their place there. Like importance of being earnest, or happy prince, for instance. Only in a broader collection, of say 100 titles. As there are so many incredible books and writers not included here. The likes of Goethe, Cervantes, Manzoni, Mann, Hamsun, Proust...
