❤❤❤ Saw her in recital just two years before this - seemed like there was nothing in the lyric rep she *couldn’t* sing. The easy command, endless breath support, thrilling embellishments… there were 7 curtain calls after her final encore. Caught one of her final Marschallins at the Met in 2017 and she was still ridiculously great without a wobble in sight and the same beauty of tone she’s had for 30+ years - she’s cared for her voice and it shows.

This opera is such a poignant yet raw exploration of the human condition, melodically beautiful yet dramatically uncompromising - it is criminally underrated!

@Classicvideofan Obviously! Esclarmonde is very exciting, as is Robert le Diable. And Faust. Just to name a few. But Thaïs is special. The other three are florid fairytales. Thaïs, on the other hand, has all the human relatability combined with the technical demands of bel canto opera

@ Well, I am speechless, mesmerizes and spellbound!!! I often prefer live performances to listen to as they are in general more Soulful but this scene, which is my absolute second favourite after Saint Sulpice in Manon, is quite dramatic even on the cd. This however was absolute GOLD! So so grateful! Singing almost as prestine, free and energetic as in the 90:s but here the dramatique expression is fully mastered and, as I said together with the Soul imprint it makes it a unique maybe once in a lifetime performance where everything is in extreme artistic excellence. I am even spotting Itzhak Perlman as first violinist but I guess that would be to good to be true.🥴 There is so much so say about the voice and the splendor of it and the way she uses it but you know all about that so… And the chest notes… The nuances making it an interpretation. A musical genius. Her beckoning for merci as she can’t help her ways and then the most dramatic part where she reveals her fear of death is just to die for if you pardon my expression. Actually very well expressed in the Met production as well but the sound on that recording (dvd) is not top notch. The story of this opera may have historical flaws but to me the transformational process is very well captured in the music and phenomenally captured by Renée. A process close to my Heart. Thank you again from the bottom of my Heart! Might be the number one treasure on KZbin at this moment IMHO. The 2004 Mirror aria from Great moments of opera is a jewel but no video so…🤩

Luckily, I’ve seen Thais several times, from Beverly Sills to Renee Fleming, and a few others in-between. Fleming had by far the most gorgeous voice, but Sills conjured up an even more tortured and heartrending soul.

@@Classicvideofan Sills was way long retired by the time I was born! I was wondering if wotan10950 might have caught her in Manon, as I know he is located in NYC. I think both Fleming and Sills sang Manon there.
