Classroom management styles are broken down into four different styles which include: authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and indulgent. This video lesson presents the various classroom management styles for educators and teachers to compare to their own style of management. The authoritarian classroom management style is known for strict enforcement of rules but very little involvement from the teacher. The lesson continues with the authoritative style, where teachers do have control of their students, and the teacher cares for their students as well. Other styles include the permissive styles. One of the least effect style in education. This style shows a teacher that doesn't really care for his students, and doesn't control their behavior either. Lastly the indulgent teacher, which cares for the students, but doesn't have any behavior expectations, classroom rules, or procedures. This video is part of a teachings in education playlist designed to help educators develop into better teachers. Other vides from the channel include the flipped classroom, project based learning, lesson planning, differentiated instruction and more.

Authoritative 100%. My kids either love me or hate me. I care for them deeply, but will not be manipulated.

I've been subbing for three days now and have realized I'm somewhere between authoritative and indulgent. Hopefully as time goes on, I'll become more and more of the former than the latter!!

Authoritative. I like to have high structure and expectations, but I am willing to hear students out and reconsider things as needed, but only after careful consideration and clear communication on why things will change. I also love discussion and strive to give as much positive feedback to kids as possible to keep them motivated and encouraged to keep going.

I go between all 4, but just because I am permissive at times, doesn't mean that I don't care, or don't prepare. It means that if a student has an idea that's better than mine, my kids just can't learn today, or it would be better for their mental health to do something else, we'll do something else. In Indulgent, I've allowed students to take over and teach the class for me, to show what they know, and how hard it is to be at the top of the room, to foster empathy and to check on their level of knowledge. You need to be very confident in your classroom culture to do so, but I would still catagorise it as permissive or indulgent. I normally try to start out Authoritative, accidentally step into Authoritarian when things go too far in Indulgent, but I try and stay in those corners. But sometimes, Permissive is the way to go to foster student relationships, to care for all parts of their being, not just their brain, and to ensure healthy kiddos.

Indulgent teacher. May you help us to go deeper with the weakness and the strength part of each class management style? and how can we improve our own teaching style?

I think I'm more of an authoritative - I have a Russian background, so I'm used to a very strict education style, however I also grew up in Canada, so experienced the other end of Permissive and Indulgent. Now I work in an IB PYP education model, so I also strive to have students have freedom in their learning, which is well thought out.

Hello everyone, how can I change my teaching style from indulgent style to authoritative ? This is my 1st year as an intern and I'm new teacher at the school I'm working at the moment. The problem is that I don't know how to move from a warning to consequences. I'll be happy to read your comments. Thank you in advance.

I feel you create several black and white fallacies in your presentation especially regarding teacher involvement. An authoritorian teacher isn't automatically lesser involved and a permissive teacher isn't necessarily one who doesn't plan or doesn't care about the teacher. I am very strict with my students but I'm also very involved in their learning and my leadership style, which has changed over time, is an reflection of the type of learning environment I find myself in b

This is the equivalent of saying only one political philosophy is right, and everyone else is doing a terrible job. Do you really think all good teachers have the same style? And yet, the way you group classroom styles, you imply only one way works.

Right. I was democratic during Quantum Learning Era. Then shifted to indulgent during Mozart Effect era - many games and music in class. Then shifted to authoritative when I found out that direct teaching works best for exams and fast. Now I like to be 50% authoritative, 40% democratic 10% indulgent. But if all theories doesnt work with my toughest class, I'll go care-free style - I wont go too tough on myself for failing that one.
