As a complete newbie to the world of wrenching, I'm so glad I came across the Dirty Garage Guy channel before I came across Del's. To someone starting out, he sounds knowledgeable and confident. Thanks for saving me from listening to false information =)

I worked as a machinist in a marine engine reman shop and had to do helicoils daily. Getting rid of seized bolts and or broken taps is where the real fun lies.

Is that a zx7r in the background? What a great example of a classic motor bike, so nice to see a rare red one. I hope he restores it and doesn't make a real Kent of himself destroying into a "cafe racer street fighter" thing. Would love to see what it looks like in 5 years after he's done 100,000 miles on it, I'm sure it will be factory perfect.

Fitting a helicoil is something described in the instructions - piece of cake. As for the forces acting on the threads when a bolt is tightened down, an accurate description is given in Automotive Engineering by Heinz Heisler.

It's pretty clear... To start with he gave two examples and then said "and others", so his example didn't need to be a through bolt example. He also clearly stated that the bolt head is tight against the [whatever it's tight against], and therefore the bolt cannot go any further. It can't go any further without ripping the head off the bolt. It doesn't need to be bottoming out, and it's clearly not bottoming out. Then you tried to prove that "stretching the thread" means "stretching the bolt" by Googling specifically for "stretching the bolt" and looking at pictures of stretched bolts. Lot of stone you're throwing in that glasshouse that you're sitting in. Careful not to get cut...

Time-serts are much better, but also much, much more expensive

Both the sump and sparkplug would be far better to use a time sert or a copy. Wouldnt ever use a helicoil on those 2. Or anything that holds liquid or is pressurised. And im an absoloute novice with basic tools.

The 'applicator tool' seems like more of a hinderance than anything tbh. For one, it limits the depth you can go to ... and it seems to offer no benefit whatsoever 🤷♂🤦♂
