Odie's theory wouldn't actually work. If the rings did slow the earth's rotation, then we wouldn't be destroyed like his computer model shows. What WOULD happen is that we'd slow down so much that for a short period of time, the planet would stop moving, and then we would reverse direction. The oceans would NOT suddenly wipe us out because the rotation speed would slow us down enough that the physics law wouldn't apply.
