After Max is forced to kill the fiends, the way her eyes well up with tears and that broken "WHY" she yells out is so sad. She is trying so hard, but the wasteland just isn't cooperating with her. I really hope she is able to keep true to herself during the second season, but I'm also eager to see how she grows now she is traveling with Cooper, and is really starting to come to terms with out to survive on the surface.

@@sully.mathis I'd argue the contrary, honestly. If you're talking about how there has to be systemic and cultural aspects that make up a genocide, a dehumanization, a ghettoization, a layered system of law, etc. then I would point out that the very nature of VaultTec, Vaults, and the Wastelanders makes it genocide. There WERE these cultural aspects! Vault-dwellers were incredibly classist to wastelanders, and it's undeniably a remnant of the old world enclave, which is explicitly genocidal in the scholarly sense of the term. This is all evident through how much Lucy changes throughout her experience in the surface world, you see something that looks very much like a deradicalization in her character arc. She, like the Buddha, left the gates and saw suffering, and it ignited her fire. She began to understand surface dwellers not as enemies and Others, but as just sorta people. Even the ones with the fucked up faces and the radiation problems, and even the dipshit brains in jars. That's what it looks like when someone who was raised into a cult gets out of it, and all genocides are occult in nature.

I was genuinely surprised on how much I liked and empathized with Lucy as a character, I was full on expecting the show to make Lucy an idiot just because she is “bubbly and awkward” a happy go lucky character with no layers whatsoever. Imagine my surprise when I watched her journey as a protagonist and looked at her rise against the odds all the while maintaining her core beliefs at heart, showing what her character flaw was since the start, she wasn’t dumb, nor stupid, Lucy was naive, naivety is VERY different from stupidity. She literally grew under a rock, under a lie, a fantasy that she full heartedly believed and carved her as a person. What I genuinely love about her is her resilience, her beliefs get beat and dragged down every single spot of dirt in the wasteland and throughout all that she gets back up again. If I had suffered even a fourth of what Lucy suffered, I very much doubt I would have the strength to get back up and maintain my values as a person. Sure, she grows, she isn’t naive anymore at the end of season 1, but she’s still her, she’s still Lucy. I want to be like her, I want to be as strong as her, I want to know that even if I suffer, even if I’m likely to not gain anything in return, even if the world is against my belief as a good person, I want to be a good person, and I want to believe that people can still be able to give kindness.

I think the next step for Lucy's evolution will be for her to kill someone. If you do not count the rad-roaches, her only kills were the feral ghoul in the Super Duper Mart and her mother who was also a feral ghoul. The first instance was self-defense and both instances were mercy killings. I believe that it was not just the fact that Hank is her father that stopped Lucy from killing him, though I obviously believe that played a part, but it also had to do with how she was raised and the values she holds which makes the very idea of taking a life abhorrent to her. And I think it would be interesting to see her struggle to reconcile that value with the unfortunate necessities of the wasteland. One thing I would love to see happen with Lucy as her story progresses is for her to help inspire people, bring them together, and over time it helps restore the New California Republic. Lucy lived her life before leaving the vault believing that Vault-Tec and their supposed plans were the best hope for humanity, it is what kept her and the other residents going. And while highly flawed, I think the NCR can fairly be described as "the best hope for humanity" at least on the west coast. It would also be poetic that her father dashed that hope and for her to renew it.

@hinasakukimi6 ай бұрын
i agree with lucy and hank, although i'd place maximus as chaotic neutral and cooper as neutral evil. maximus is greyer than lucy and can power trip a little (understandably). but that's why i think neutral works... his goodness or badness is very situational. cooper, meanwhile, *did* sell lucy to have her organs harvested. for his own survival, yes, but by that point only his survival and goal matters. he doesn't even consider other people to be human (walton goggins said that's how cooper views lucy, at first). whether or not you agree he's evil, i definitely think the neutral column fits him most. he just puts on a chaotic front to instil fear in others. that said, they're probably both hovering between alignments somewhat (tho maybe that's a cop out lol). cooper mostly acts out of self-interest for a purpose, not just wanton sadism, and he is still capable of feeling remorse/disgust with himself. and maximus just needs some kindness/stability in his life. he has the potential to be what a true 'knight' should be, not whatever the BOS thinks knights are.
@candyh42846 ай бұрын
I think Lucy starts lawful good but shifts to neutral good during the series. I (full disclosure have been spoiled, but have been holding out on watching 7&8, so sorry if i miss smth) think Coop's chaotic good. The worst things I can think about are the cannibalism (from a ghoul who he just mercy killed as kindly as he could, having him think about foods he liked, before he turned feral), distrusting his wife (which he was right about, to be perfectly fair), and the general sort of bounty hunting, philandering (non-sexually, i think?) crap we all do in the fallout games. It's what the games are, really, is just taking bounties en route to your overarching goal. The worst thing about the cannibalism, to be honest, was that he didn't cook it first, for two reasons: 1) as someone who's survived the wasteland for two centuries now, he should know that you get FAR more caloric mileage out of cooked food as opposed to raw, and 2) at this point he had ostensibly no reason to injure Lucy (besides preparing her for "Hey its bad out here and you're in a vault suit, you gotta drink gross water and stuff") and raw meat from wasteland animals is always radiated, especially ghouls for crying-out-loud. Max on the other hand I would argue has the most complex moral arc, going from lawful good as a kid, to lawful neutral as a scribe through when he stops impersonating Titus to whats-his-nuts the bully, at which point he's back to lawful good, then through the sort of "Act II and III" episodes, slides dramatically away from the lawful, and then by the end hits chaotic good.

I totally agree, we also have to consider the education and brainwashing they have done to make the dwellers subservient. Conditioned to be prepared against visible threats, instead of surprise attacks like the raiders impersonating vault 32 dwellers. Lucy is far better conditioned as a result of her upbringing and the efforts we learn about earlier in the first episode. She takes a more active stance most likely because she is the child of the overseer of vault 33, this creates a mindset of being a better example and leader to her fellow vault dwellers. If Bud's Buds was working as it should, the residents of Vault 33 would have been capable of defending themselves.
@djx71346 ай бұрын
Seemed almost like it was supposed to produce two separate and distinct pools: 1. people like Lucy, who, while positive, are also capable of making their own decisions, and 2. people like the two wannable overseer guys, who may have booksmarts but mostly just follow orders with a smile and rarely ask questions. Norm would be the type they'd want to avoid: unmotivated yet independent-minded people who prefer to challenge the status quo. Overall, Bud's buds was destined to fail because it's quite unrealistic, but I understand what he was trying to achieve.
@Scyth0r6 ай бұрын
They do make it pretty clear that Bud is....well....kind of a moron. They're producing the Fallout version of what they say ideal corporate managers are 'on paper'. Idealistic, co-operative and communal, relentlessly postitive and completely oblivious to the darker aspects of human nature. The hypocrisy between what people proclaim and actual reality is a recurrent Fallout theme. Vault 33 is what you get when you breed people to try and match the 'on paper' ideal in the real world.

I don't think they were supposed to, right? It was supposed to be a three-layered caste, 31 as the upper echelon managers, 32 as the farmers and laborers, and 33 as the breeding stock/cannon fodder(?), was how I was seeing it

Seems to me that the people from vault 31 were more than likely vets. There would have been a lot of them running around and coming from a world where they had just fought off an invasion would give them a world view that would lead them to fighting for their home. This would explain how hank knows how to use power armor and where the bases of their weapons training comes from.

Okie dokie (or oki doki) is just a really fun and friendly way to say "Ok", which is useful when talking online because so many versions of ok sound condescending or slightly aggressive or annoyed. Nah we hate terribly written shows, Fallout TV show is another example of both critics and audience loving the show and its characters, they were well written, they had flaws, they had character development, it had intrigue and imagination and still remained true to the source material and its core fanbase. I like to ask if Lucy or Norm were an only child, would they be able to go as far as they did? I do not since either one would have been forced to fit into the mold that the vault 33 dwellers decided upon them. I don't think Lucy would be independent without Norm being fine as an outcast in vault 33. Norm would not have the confidence and courage to challenge the worldview of vault 33 without Lucy's support. The only way I could see them being much better than the others in vault 33 was simply because they have each other. I don't believe their father would be as supportive of Norm like Lucy would have been. I do not think Lucy would stand against Hank as much as she did if she didn't meet with Norm, Maximus, and Vault 4 dwellers. They didn't become the people they are because of the vault, but from each other.
@SplunkmastahАй бұрын
I love how the clothing of our three characters reflects their inner monologue by the end. Lucy's vault suit is torn and bloodied, but it's still there, her white undershirt stained but still mostly intact. She's been hardened by the wastes, but hasn't forgotten where she came from and makes to attempt to hide that she wants to do good. Maximus's white undershirt mirrors Lucy's. He's ultimately a good person who has done some bad things in the name of survival, but he's also been selfless and makes the choice to do the right thing on several occasions. However, this white shirt is always covered by Brotherhood insignia. His true colors are hidden by the cult he's been assigned to for his entire life. Sometimes his entire being is encased by that brotherhood identity. In the end, he wears the insignia reluctantly, having to hide. The Ghoul's outfit stays the same, because the Ghoul stays the same. The old Coop is still in there, and he pops out every now and then, but there's little place for good men in the wasteland.

If the regular vault dwellers are docile wouldn't this imply that one of Lucy's grandparents on her mom's side is also from Vault 31? Since Lucy's mom discovered the truth and escaped with her children, which a normal dweller most likely wouldn't have done, perhaps in order for the experiment to work each generation must breed with someone from 31 to eventually create a super manager?

Important point. Hank knows the surface is populated. He also knows the factions still exist. So is his explanation (in EP8), how is he expecting to 'get rid of the factions' within one generation, so Vault 33 can 'recolonise'? Hmm? 🤔 I suspect he knows something. Something like, maybe, there is a shadowy group of people who are nearly ready to finish 'wiping the surface clean' in preparation for compliant Vault dwellers to emerge and work form them. Norm's got very high or extreme perception and extreme intelligence I think. He instinctively knows when something is not as it should be, has a thirst for knowledge and is capable of intuitive leaps. Low strength and endurance. Not much charisma. Not sure about his agi or luck though. He might be quite lucky actually. Hiding under a table and his sister turns up at exactly the right time. Yeah, he gets a couple of lucky breaks and with so many low stats he probably needs one more high one. The Ghoul is the tough one. Regardless of his SPECIAL, he's going to have all his skills capped out and a bunch of perks, giving big advantages even if his SPECIAL is lower in the same area.

I was so worried Lucy would become yet another "boss babe mary sue" but i was pleasantly surprised amd i really like her character. Sure she's moralistic and naive but she ACTUALLY lives by her ideals even when it's inconvenient for her to do so. The scean where Max admits the truth to her was powerful in her character development as she gained the experience to know people in the wasteland are trying to get by the best they can but rather than become bitter or resentful and become just the same she shows that she still values human connection and trust while having immense empathy and compassion.

I clicked on this video knowing nothing about fallout or this show. i got intrigued a few minutes in and went and watched it. the whole thing. in a day. This show was so amazing, and Lucy was such a compelling character. Lucy using the morals she was taught to realize her father was a bad man reminded me of myself. Growing up my parents made us go to church every sunday, but it was those morals i learned there that made me realize they only wanted my kindness and generosity to be given to them, or people like them. but the thing about being good-- choosing to be good, and kind-- is that it is endless. it is naive to think everyone will return that, but it's a lovely life to live, believing that people are good, deep down. Anyways, thanks for putting me on to this show haha. I'm gonna be thinking of this for ages.
