The bomb that fell was probably a cobalt bomb, a nuclear weapon that has a cobalt casing. The neutron radiation from the explosion would generate a massive amounts of irradiated cobalt. This will contaminate the site of the explosion for centuries afterwards. In our timeline, cobalt bombs were never produced, but in the Fallout timeline they probably were.

That’s right, weren’t those among the weapons that got shelved by the SALT talks? I’m guessing those never happened in Fallout seeing as we have both dirty bomb nukes and hear mentions of gratuitous use of bio weapons. Wonder if they’ve got a variant of the Thor system...

Regarding Virgil. In my playthrough, when Kells sent me to kill him, I informed him that Virgil is human again, since I'd let that week pass and returned to Virgil to speak to his human self before I got that mission. So Kells commented in response to that something along the lines of "Wait? He did? Is that possible? Well okay, then, we'll keep him alive and monitor him, he may end up being of some use." So no, killing him isn't mandatory if you play as a Brotherhood character. - And I don't think it's because of a mod, since that line is fully voiced and everything. Maybe just cut content? Doubt it though. Maybe Ox just missed that.

The fact that most of the places in the glowing sea are just something like “forgotten church” or “decayed reactor site” makes the glowing sea even more ominous and depressing. Most likely, the sole survivor would have known multiple of these places before the war, but the bombs have distorted the area and buildings so much that they are almost unrecognizable.

This works so well on first playthrough, like you may think "Ok, corner of the map isn't that far" and then you go and go and go through this glowing desert, where is nothing but death everywhere, then you open the map and finds out that you already far away from "invisible wall" you supposed to meet long time ago, but you still didn't complete your way

That eyebot temporary companion reminds me of this "glitch" I had in my game: I found an unmarked bunker near the starting area of my game, hacked an eyebot there and he became a friend. Heres the weird part, even tho I deactivated him in sanctuary, I made a little place for him there, I would constantly find him joining me and my current companion on our wasteland adventures, until recently when this courageous little eyebot fought super mutants head on, he died and even though I used console to bring life back, he wasn't the same. Now im using a mod to build eyebots in the Robot Workbench and have my little guy come back as a full companion, I even took his parts to put inside the eyebots storage so he actually lives on inside the new eyebot

i actually have an hypothesis about all the radaway/radx, if there's lore i'm probably wrong but the fallout universe is basically a nuclear powered, stuck in the 50s world. you can see small nuclear reactors in the basements of buildings, so my guess is that there could be accidents and people would just treat it as if it were simply a scratch.

Yeah, that seems kind of logical. In the Fallout universe, Radaway is most likely used as a radiation bandage while Rad-X seems to be more like a radiation resistance supplement in a way, especially in Fallout 4 and Fallout 76. This would explain why using Radaway in Fallout 4 seems to have a bandage-like sound effect while using Rad-X seems to have a taking pills-esque sound effect.

Utilizing my basic geographical skills and general understanding of the area, in game and in reality ( I'm a masshole ), I have another explanation as to why the glowing sea is... glowing. But first some background. The glowing sea is probably made up of Framingham (formerly the largest town in the U.S., but now just a lame city) as well as Sherborn and Ashland (my hometown, hooray?) Using Natick as a reference point, these towns are directly west and southwest of it. Framingham is indeed a jumble of factories and housing like you said, take the old Dennison Factory (which is actually apartments now) that is right next to several residential neighborhoods. (Most of the factories are defunct today though.) As for a military presence, you have the Framingham National Guard Depot next to the Musterfield at Concord Place ( A residential area which was originally intended for military families but is now low income housing, it looks nice today but it was about as dumpy as the glowing sea when I was living there circa 2002 ) Down the street is a school which indeed has one of the many playgrounds mentioned. The Abandoned Shack and its bunker could be based off of MEMA (Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency) It's the first of the Cold War era State Emergency Operations Centers commissioned by President Kennedy. That interstate is probably Route 9, basically the mother road of Greater Boston. Not sure about the nuclear domes or that Sentinel Site, never seen or heard of them around here and I really hope there aren't just a bunch of nukes chilling near my house. Nevertheless, the impact site being southwest of Natick could very well be Ashland. My explanation as to why the biggest bombs went there is that Ashland is the home of the Nyanza Chemical Waste Dump (of which I live right down the street from :/ ). Back in its prime as the Nyanza factory, toxic waste byproducts were simply dumped without much concern (this was before environmental regulation was a thing). In 1978 it was listed as one of the top 10 most toxic places in the United States. Even after massive cleanup attempts, you can still feel its presence in the area in ways such as signs warning not to eat contaminated fish out of the Sudbury River. By blowing it up, perhaps it would unleash the chemicals still buried under the site and allow for the toxic storms seen ingame to wreak carnage among the land... and my house.

In a comment I made earlier I gave directions to an unmarked building behind the Gwinnett Brewery. In that building is a terminal, on Foreman's Log number 4 it says, and I quote: "I was sleeping in my chair when it happened. They must have missed the city with the big one - Framingham's gone from what little I heard on the radio before it went quiet." So yes, you are right.

At early levels, the Glowing Sea is terrifying since so much can kill you so easily, and you're always there on borrowed time since the rads will get to you. At upper levels, it's a food run. So much delicious radscorpian and deathclaw just waiting for you to harvest, and you get double the meat with the surivial guide you fine.. I'd actually go out on that raider power armor from the cave in there just to make it more challenging.

Going into the Glowing Sea in a hazmat suit in the low to mid 20's and a decent weapon I found it easier than times when I've gone in around level 60 or higher due to how the game tries to adjust enemy levels to the player's level resulting in most enemies being at their basic level. It also helps that you can get pretty far entering the area at the western or southern map boundary before encountering radiation, especially if you're dealing with rain weather effects from the swamp.

You want to know why it's so bad in the Glowing Sea? Take a look at what's pretty much next to the Crater of Atom. A reactor. Decayed Reactor Site. They hit a nuclear reactor with a nuclear bomb. Try to grasp the amount of radiation that unleashed as a result of that. Sure there are other craters in the Boston area, but they're not that bad in comparison to what the Glowing Sea became. I mean, it was heavily hit, more so than any other area. But it also hit a reactor. Try to grasp that.

I love the Glowing Sea myself. It highlights a point I often bring up with people when designing and writing settings. You can't make things All One Thing. Even if you're trying to be thematic it kind of blends together. Fallout 3's wasteland isn't really memorable to me (outside of how you can get trolled by random encounters at low level and come across a lot of stuff waaaay above your weight class). No matter where you go outside of like, Oasis... it all kind of has the same palette, the same textures, the same sort of bleakness to it. Their dungeons really suffered from that as well where you come across things like Bethesda Headquarters and it... has all the same assets and textures as every other ruined pre-war above ground building. Contrast makes things pop. And probably why the Glowing Sea struck such a chord with me. Compared to say, the relatively tame areas like Farms up north near Sanctuary, or the still mostly intact buildings of downtown Boston, etc... the absolute devastation and radioactive craphole that is the Glowing Sea really stands out. It's intimidating when you first come up to it. Wandering it stays in your mind. To me it's the same feeling New Vegas had when I got out of the very samey brown desert and into the mountains near Jacobstown. Even though it was more "lively" with the greens, plentiful trees and plants, etc, around there. It remains an intimidating area to me that does stick out. In part due to the massive amount of Cazadors there if you go off the road, yes (Funny enough the first time I went to find the Khans at Red Rock Canyon I cut through that area and the masses of Cazadores there to get into the "Back" of the place instead of the route you're supposed to go...

Yo Ox! I'm finishing my major in both archaeology and geology and can help you out a bit with the meaning of and conditions the lead to pyroclastic flow and liquefaction. First, unfortunately liquefaction needs a certain amount of sustained motion to properly occur, and especially so if it was to sink buildings or vehicles. Additionally, sediments need to be well saturated with water to allow for the vibrations to increase the space between the soil grains and create the liquid-like environment. Therefore you would need a location that creates the conditions for naturally waterlogged sediments like a delta or sea or sub-sea level terrain where there would be substantial water throughout the soil above the bedrock. Due to this not only would there have to be the proper conditions of waterlogged sediments, but an atomic blast would not likely create the amount of time of sustained motion needed to liquefy the ground. As far as pyroclastic flows they are not really characterized by the caving in or falling of a rock face or mountain side as that would simply be a landslide. Rather a pyroclastic flow is characterized by the incredibly hot suffocating volcanic gas and fine volcanic ash (what we call tephra) that moves like a massive wave across the land or mountainside. A large portion of land and solid material may move down the mountain with the pyroclastic flow, but the flow itself is just the wave of hot ash that is produced. Hope you read this! And If you are interested I have a university log in to the entire online resource of usually restricted academic articles so if wanted access to any on any topic I can shoot you them!

I have a single Pavlovian memory of this place. I remember backseat gaming FO4 with my dad, and he had a little tune he would sing while in the Glowing Sea. I remember it went like, "It's just you and me in the Glowing Sea..." And whenever I hear about the Glowing Sea or if it was mentioned, I would hear that tune. Nice little memory from this game.

I noticed a Child of Atom, haven't seen those guys since D.C. Those were some good times back in the capital wasteland. Tranquility Lane, that "Gary" vault, Grandma Sparkly's cabin. Y'know, if memory serves, she had quite the arsenal in there. Lot of 12-20 gauge weapons and ammo in there.

wish bethesda put a broken vault you could explore in the glowing sea or an underground cave system that is also a settlement. While they did put alot of stuff in the glowing sea there was alot of space left for more that they could've done something with.I really liked the concept and the area itself but I feel there wasn't enough places to explore and it leaves me wanting more :/

I just did the quest to talk to Virgil yesterday -- on survival difficulty -- on a stealth character -- using only a hazmat suit for protection (max radiation resistance, 0 physical and energy defense). It took me 5 or 6 tries, but I finally made it there and back. A few things I learned: there is almost no cover to effectively hide anywhere. Also, there are no non-irradiated beds, so no saving until you are back out; even Virgil's cave has only an unusable super mutant bed. And, since all enemies are altered to be tougher, some enemy groups are more difficult than you would normally expect. For example, deathclaws are relatively easy, but the most difficult group of enemies for this character, by far? a swarm of bloodbugs.

@@criticalthinking1144 I like it because of the nervous attitude you get. A lot of games have these kinds of environments but they don’t really have that much of a threat…but in the glowing sea it’s a real threat. For one, you kinda need power armor to survive, so if you don’t have to many stocked up, you’ve got this time limit esc thing. And at any time a high leveled rad scorpion or death claw could show up and rip you to shreds.

Oxhorn, when talking about why the glowing sea is still highly irradiated today, you said it was shallow. But there is also another very important reason. Nuclear reactors. When nukes detonate, they give off a massive amount of radiation in a short period; it dissipates mostly in a few decades. But nuclear reactors are different. Instead of the radiation being released in one powerful burst, it is released slowly over time. So the radiation stays for a much longer period; centuries or millennia. Did I mention there are a TON of nuclear reactors in the glowing sea? Also btw, you saying the glowing sea is like it is is because it's shallow is also a very good answer. I think it is a combination of the shallowness and nuclear reactors that make the glowing sea the way it is.
@MeepChangeling
@MeepChangeling 7 жыл бұрын
Actually, nukes radiation lasts for ~90 days. It's months, not years. At least, with modern warheads. Hiroshima and Nagasaki got the short end of the stick what with being stuck with crappy G1 nukes. If you don't believe me on that, get a US Army survival manual and flip to the section on Nuclear Detonations.
@oxhorn
@oxhorn 7 жыл бұрын
There is another nuclear reactor, by County Crossing. It is highly irradiated, but that area is not as irradiated as the Glowing Sea. I think the unique topology of the area has more to do with why the place is still irradiated so highly more than anything. None of it has been able to wash out to sea.
@MeepChangeling
@MeepChangeling 7 жыл бұрын
Actually no. It doesn't. At least, not much. It depends 100% on the half-life of the fissionable materials used in the bomb. These decay at a fixed rate for each nuclear substance and believe it or not, you don't have to wait for all of it to go away before it's safe. Just most. This is because you're ALWAYS being bathed in radiation from space, our own sun, and the cosmic microwave background. All lifeforms possess some level of resistance to radiation damage. You just need to wait for something to fall below the threshold humans can tolerate for ti to be perfectly safe. Since most nuclear weapons don't add more fissionable material to make a bigger explosion (Cuz enriching uranium is EXPENCIVE), but rather use more advanced techniques to ensure that more of that same amount of material reacts and detonates (Early bombs wasted most of their enriched uranium via scattering it to the winds, totally unused.). As such, a 15 Megaton bomb, and a 25 Megaton bomb will have the same amount of enriched uranium in them, and thus due to atomic decay, their blast zones will be safe at the same time (roughly) assuming they detonated at the same time.
@joeb5316
@joeb5316 7 жыл бұрын
Here's a theory given that even the purported cobalt bomb should have faded to background levels after 200 years. Suppose the impact site at the Crater of Atom was a storage site for industrial radioactive isotopes with long half-lives. If the Chinese knew about the Sentinel site and couldn't commit enough weapons to crack it, if there was a disposal area nearby they could blast that with a small warhead in a ground burst and neutralize Sentinel through extreme toxicity instead. Given the proximity to Sentinel and the other reactors, and the general availability of atomic power, I don't think that the existence of such a thing is outside the realm of possibility. But I little about nuclear physics and explosions in general so I could be totally wrong, too.
@killawhale8726
@killawhale8726 7 жыл бұрын
Nico No Chill It also has the do with the nature of the Nuke dropped. The bomb that was dropped on the glowing sea was likely a lesser yeild, with a smaller explosion. This smaller explosion meant that fallout would not be spread very far or fly up into the atmosphere to be carried away by wind. The fallout would therefore be concentrated in the glowing sea.

My first thought when seeing the warping effect in certain spots was that it is a reference to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and the Anomalies in that game which give off a similar effect. Also, I'm fairly certain it was confirmed that the Commonwealth isn't in as much of a mess as other places because only one bomb was dropped in the area, and it _missed_ the intended target of Boston.

Not only missed, but was a ground strike, which is much less efficient for physical destruction. As an air burst you get a much bigger death bubble and most of the radiation is dispersed. Whereas with a ground burst a huge portion of the energy is used to obliterate the immediate area, making a massive crater and imbuing the rubble with radiation, creating actual fallout which can rain back down onto the ground.
