Sorry there isnt a simple value fix. Everyone will have different brightness settings on top of panel variance, so its best to just try and adjust it yourself to your own liking. Here is a link to the pattern I used in the video,

Really lucky to have found this video. Will try it soon. I keep switching back and forth between dynamic tone mapping on and off when I happen to be watching dark content, because sometimes it's just really hard to see anything even in a perfectly dark room. I'll be very happy if I can leave that in the past.

Hey Classy you really put out some excellent videos I have learned a lot from your channel and you make things easy to understand. I liked the video about why Dolby Vision seems dark and OLED seems dim to some people. I personally don't need a super bright image to enjoy watching content. To me the brightness is enough for me in a dark or dimly lit room. I make a few adjustments in the settings and I'm good to go.

2:26 "from bottom right, to top left, invisible" hey, on my LG C3 in game optimizer/pc mode i can see the top-left, but not the one right below it. I'm hoping that this is correct, or am i suppose to be able to see the one below it, but not the absolute top left...because if that's the case... well for some reason, no matter how much i crank the "black levels" setting up, i still can't see the one right below the top left one. also, dynamic range is disabled in GameOptimizer mode it seems, how do i proceed? also, the download is titles "16-30" is this for SDR content that starts at 16-255? I've been playing intentionally, with everything set to SDR because HDR seems like a rabbit hole that i haven't wanted to go into yet.

It looks like for the game optimizer setting you need even more correction to fix b crush. Unfortunately, as you have already explained in the video, you can only raise the colors so much, until it starts to cause a large number of them to overshoot. It really sucks that using just a little of raised color only helps a little bit with severe crush.

If you are really anal about shadow detail, Autocal and using the OLED Shadow Detail feature that's implemented in Calman Home for LG is honestly a lifesaver. Enabling that after the Greyscale calibration will fix all black crush. Of course, this requires a colorimeter and Calman Home for LG which isn't exactly cheap, but I think it's worth it.

I have the LG C1 and Calman software. I see the adjustments for shadow detail, but not exactly sure how to adjust. I’m curious about what test patterns and settings you are using. The recommended settings for SDR are 23/320 and HDR 14/320. I find this to be too dark.

@@ach1ll3us72 I spoke to Portrait Displays, and they sent me a link for a test pattern that can help dial in shadow detail. I can tell you with my display that my settings were around 23/450-500 SDR and about the same ballpark for HDR 14/450-500. When you are in the shadow detail settings in Calman, you have to make sure you check the "enable calibration" box or nothing will adjust. Once you have that test pattern, you raise/lower the shadow detail value until you see box 65 (HDR/SDR) just visibly blinking. I did this in a pitch dark room, btw. Basically, I was adding value, and hitting commit a lot, haha. Dolby Vision was a slightly different pattern, and is very dark. I'm still learning this stuff myself. Hope any of this info helped.

I just raised it until I just started to see the 65. I guess a good rule of thumb would be to raise until you see it in the 65 box, push it a little further until you see artifacts, then pull it back until those artifacts disappear. Wish I had a better response, but it did improve my shadow detail.

Im just wondering.. Setting brightness above 52 does add slight greys to the black bars on letterboxed video, but this is noticeable ONLY when i'm looking inches away from the screen in a dark room. I actually don't mind turning it up to 54, and maybe 55. Still looks black enough from a distance, BUT I'm worried, if this constant slight grey in the black bars will cause burn-in over time. They're very faint.. but any thoughts? Cheers.

An important understanding Question: I have now raised red green blue as in the first video, i.e. 2.5% +12 / 5% +12 / 7.5% +12 / etc. to 30% as mentioned in the video here . Is it correct that way ? So that you get this almost clean curve. With this settings, about 2-4 boxes do not see top left corner So don't go up to 40% like in the first video? And you have to be able to see all the boxes except the diagonal stripes, right?

You have to be in a very dark room and should barely see the darkest ones. The values needed will be different depending on how bright you have the TV set. It's better to error on the side of less than more, which will still be an improvement over nothing at all.

I am hearing impaired and to avoid arguments with my wife, she listens through the tv speakers (Panasonic Plasma) and I route TV RCA audio output to a Sony receiver and hook up wired earphones. I now can independently control volume. As far as I can tell the LG C1 has settings to allow TV to output speaker sound and audio out at same time. But I don't think the Sony A80J allows this. Curious if professional calibrators can bring up the black detail in dolby vision as well? Last time I had a TV calibrated they weren't as focused on HDR and DV but that was 3+ years ago. I know some got confused with Vincent's statement about how sometiems low luminance scenes can be overbrighrened. He made sure to release a statement to tell people the blacks on the a90j are perfect. He was like people heard one thing and took it how they wanted to. He made sure to say there aren't raised blacks. So I figured it was the same for the a80j as he mentioned it the same way. He said its that occasionally some low luminance scenes overbrighten but he made sure to tell everyone the blacks were perfect. Left a long comment responding to someone also on the a90j video about it. But hey man didn't expect the a80j to actually lift. I figured it just came out of balck to fast at times and would overbrighten some low luminance/above blacks scenes. I figured with how sensitive whisper status is to raised blacks like he was with the c9 with dolby vision he would see it but he hasn't yet. I'm very sensitive to raised blacks also I remember my c9 having raised black letterbox bars lol. Luckily lg this year doesn't have that issue. And my Sony doesn't either.

@@JumpRopeLift weird man I specifically asked keep it classy if he had raised blacks blacks his a80j and he said no. Just that it can come out of black to fast and would create more shadow detail as that's what Sony goes for. I never have witnessed actual raised blacks with any of the sony tvs this year. I have seen above black scenes being slightly brighter then they should be. That's an easy fix. Raised blacks I haven't come across. Kg also said he hasn't had any raised blacks with his a80j.

@@JumpRopeLift completely agree with you on that one brotha 💯 luckily I haven't seen any grey blacks yet. Black letterbox bars are always black also thank god. Things that are meant to be pure black are pure black. Now low luminance scenes with above black for sure can be a bit to bright at times but luckily alot of the time it isn't noticeable. As you said also it's an easy fix regardless for either set whether it be Sony or LG for either of the way they display above blacks. Whether it be Sony who comes out of black faster or lg crushing.

doesn't the first available setting labeled "adjust brightness level of the selected signal level" of the R, G, and B brightness settings at those near black points adjust them up together, rather than having to go to each one and adjusting them by the same amount? seems like that would save you 3 times the steps to achieve the same thing unless you needed to tweak the white balance further for those individual brightness points kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipqZXnV3jJh8mKM (when your adjusting stuff around here)

just got a 65 c1 a few days ago. Should i be using test patterns to break it in? Not getting it calibrated... Ive read after break in period the brightness will increase? Will this mitigate the crush a bit? Atm, using this pattern, hdr shadow detail seems great for me. Sdr seems decent at 54 brightness. Atm i am thinking setting it at 52 for a bit, as a sort of middle ground. And check this after a while and maybe adjust... or is it better to just use 50 thil break in period is over? or is all this break in period stuff not something i should have in mind?

there are some lower issues when not calibrated correctly with the near blacks but not in the way it is described here... the testchart 16-27 levels are so low you should not see anything in the whole quarter of the left top corner on normal ambient light conditions for rec709 gamma 2.4 you should only see slightly 2-4% of video level (black pludge type is +4%) should be able to be differentiated from true black 0% . in 8 bit bitdepth the 4% level is around 25 the testchart goes from 16 to 27... so anything extremely close to black like bitlevel 17-18-19-20 is also not visible it starts by around 21 depending on your ambient light and the peak brightness (100 nits) 10 nits amibent light, so the fix is nonsense, the fix produce other artefacts you do not want but only be seen in some other special images... better solution is to calibrate the whole gamma curve

Having an issue with my LG C1 where 4k playback is occasionally very dark. Curious if you have any thoughts. Sorry it’ll take a bit to explain but I appreciate any feedback. This is with HDR content on a 4k Blu-ray being played through a PS5. A perfect example is when I was watching the 2021 movie Dune. Around chapter 16 when the main character Paul and his mother cross the desert, most of the scene was unbelievably dark. To the point where you couldn’t make out much in the scene especially when the worm comes up out of the ground at 2:11:00 in the movie and fills the screen. It’s practically black. Paul is supposed to be seen in the foreground, but he’s indistinguishable from the worm. It just looks nearly black through the whole screen. I then went to the HBO max app and played the same scene in Dolby vision and the scene is significantly brighter. All of the scales and wrinkles are visible on the worm and you can see Paul (main character) in the foreground. I’m using an LG C1 and the RGB setting on the console is set to auto and the black level is set to auto on my TV. I also even had HDR tone mapping set to ON on the TV which I’d prefer not to. Someone had suggested setting the input that the PS5 is in, on the TV, to be recognized as a PC instead of a game console. Oddly enough this fixed it and brightened the scene right up. However this isn’t ideal and many features are greyed out when set to a PC, especially all motion dejudder settings. So I tried switching the input setting back to game console and low and behold the scene was nice and bright like it should be. I rewatched the scene several times and at one point it went back to being ultra dark. Like some sort of rest or energy savring or something mode that darkens everything up (despite having energy saving set to off on the TV). Switch the input setting back to PC and then to game mode again and it’s fixed, but only temporarily. Has anyone come across this odd inconsistent behavior? All my energy saving and AI settings on the TV are off. Followed HDTVtests setting recommendations. It’s driving me a little crazy not being able to figure it out. Thank you if you got this far and have any ideas.

Near blacks looks ok. Not great but decent on my c1. I am wondering about right bottom corner on this pattern because too many rectangles are too bright. They look like a grey stain. It shouldn’t be like that but I can’t do anything about that. Edit: ok at first I was watching KZbin test on my Apple TV 4K. Then with the same pictures mode I tried native KZbin app. Guess what. Near black test on native app with brightness 53 looks gorgeous. Even near black corner is way better. So strange. I usually use Apple TV because I found out that most content look better on it. Better colors better quality. Better in every way. Not every movie or tv series. Old Curb Your Enthusiasm look pretty pretty good ;) on both. But the office looks way better on ATV. Native HBO max app brings strange orange skin tone. Batman begins also better on Apple TV. New 4K movies look similar but still some advantages to ATV

No, you'll just have an elevated black level and less contrast. Change the gamma if you want to. People don't seem to understand that these parts of the image are supposed to black and near black, not an elevated grey. I think this whole issue stems from people being used to crap like 1000:1 IPS monitors.

These test patterns can be misleading sometimes and cause you to think you have a black crush issue when you don't. Oftentimes blacks are fine with real content and looked crushed with test patterns. On OLED to completely fix crush blacks you will sacrifice other aspects of the picture quality. Its better to accept that there will be slight black crush with OLED if you want the rest of the pq to look good. OLED has flaws and you will never achieve perfection.

With limited band with of 8 bit the detail is better because Oled is not bright enough to show the full bandwith of 10-12 bit color. I dont know how can people hype so much about the gaming on oled as they suck big time in bright screen, can never utilise 10 bit color if you dont want black crush, not to mention how the annoying ABL. Except the red color, the rest sucks on oled. All you can see from oled screen is just dark, dim theme of black and blue, losing all the detail from a powerful pc with high end VGA or next gen console.
