Gosh, right from the very beginning of the film, with the beautiful opening shot of Arthur quietly trying to force himself to smile, this whimsical yet bittersweet piano music, and the vintage title card suddenly appearing in front of a beaten down Arthur, I was absolutely mesmerized!! It was such a shock to see the movie so prominently display its title and transition into its haunting musical score right after Arthur takes such a beating--those opening shots and music arrested my attention immediately, and really set the tone for the entire movie. If you're looking for some excellent classical/jazz fusion, you should definitely check out more of his stuff (it's pretty much all on KZbin, and some on Spotify), in particular his Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio, and his Concerto for Classical Guitar and Jazz Piano Trio. His name has never been that big, due to the fact that he was releasing more standard jazz at a time when Davis and Coltrane reigned supreme.

Joker proves that sometimes, simpler is better, rather than overdone. There’s no SFX (not that I’m against SFX). I LOVED the raw, stripped down and dark 70s tone of the movie. The beginning was wonderful, especially how they introduced the classic red, black and white WB intro, followed by the gritty, faded font titles and this simple ragtime playing in the background. Kinda reminds me of Tarantino’s style. I’d be so thrilled if DC would make more movies like this, PG-rating, be damned.
