Acclaimed social psychologist Claude Steele discusses his book, "Whistling Vivaldi and Other Clues to How Stereotypes Affect Us," presented by Harvard Book Store. Steele shares the experiments and studies that show that just exposing subjects to stereotypes impairs their performance in the area affected by the stereotype. Steele's conclusions shed new light on a host of U.S. social phenomena, from the racial and gender gaps in standardized test scores to ideas about athletic prowess. More lectures at forum-network.org
This talk took place on May 25, 2010.

Segregation was so damaging. I remember going to Georgia as a child of about the age of 10 to visit relatives. I was one of 7 children (white) who’s parents taught that ALL PPL WERE EQUAL. No form of racism was tolerated in our home. I was astonished to see white’s only restrooms at gas stations, separate drinking fountains for white’s and black’s. I had no idea that these things existed and it made me sad. Still does, but I personally don’t harbor any guilt for these things. I don’t have racist friends, I didn’t grow up in a racist neighborhood.

Thank you sir. I'm really trying to absorb this idea about stereotype threat because my professor is stereotyping us students because of our course.

This is awesome... But where are all of the comments?? Not much to discuss when people aren't bashing one another...

I have no doubt that Mr. Steele is a highly intelligent man. He strikes me as someone with good intentions because he wants to reduce the negative impacts of some stereotypes. Something just doesn’t seem right about his assertions on human behavior. Maybe i just just don’t buy into social psychology.

What kind of critique do you have? With all due respect, who are you, or who do you think you are to disregard an entire discipline?
