Claudia and David are such a good combo. I'm not too ashamed to admit I never "got" Claudia Winkleman at first. I figured since she wasn't a stand-up, so I took her seriously and didn't think much of her. Stupid and arrogant of me. Was only after a few more viewings that I realised how aware she is of what she's doing, how good a performance she gives and how thorough an entertainer she is.

For those wondering, according to all scientific studies done on this matter (and there were a few) the picture of the dress was taken in artificial lighting with more blue than natural light. The picture is white and gold-ish for that reason (you can zoom in on each individual pixel to check). Around 15 to 20% of people's brains, however, think that the picture was taken in artificial light and thus show them what the dress would look like in natural lighting. Apparently this happens more to people who are used to work in articficially lit environments. There is a third even smaller category of people who can switch between both at will and also many other categories in between (all yellow, etc). edit: depending on the picture (there are different versions of it circulating on the internet), individual pixels may appear yellowish brown, while others may appear white or light blue. Changing the lighting also changes how people see the picture. Also the percentages of how people see it vary according to the version of the picture and the lighting.

The brain adjusts the colours of the dress depending on whether you are used to working in artificial lighting. Thus a lot of people adjust the colours to blue and black to what they should be, but the majority think it's white and gold due to the effect of the natural lighting.

@@StinkyBuster Its not about "understanding" lighting, I've seen all three versions (from the same photo) - the first time I saw it, it seemed *obviously* and clearly black and blue (with no weird lighting look - that is what David is seeing). Many times I see it now like you see it - a black and blue dress in bad lighting - and sometimes if my mind is just in the right frame that day I see it as *clearly* white and gold. Like night and day difference and its the *same* photo. So its literally to do with your brain applying certain processing rules regarding the light. Some people are predisposed to see it more one way than another, but I promise, its possible to see all 3 versions. The version you're seeing is what Ayoade was seeing by the way.

Due to the warm lighting and washed out colours the black kinda looks like a dark gold colour, but the background is clearly warmly lit so it's easy to work out that it's meant to be black. The blue though very clearly looks blue, not sure how people can mistake it for white.

The dress thing: Our brains assign colors differently based on lighting. If you see that as a normally exposed image, it looks pale blue and brown/gold because the blue part of the dress is roughly as bright as the whitest parts of the image. If your brain instead works from the other direction and compensates for the overly bright exposure by telling you that the dark part must be quite dark to look even kind of dark in that lighting, then you see it as black and the light part as blue.

The dress is blue and black, so the studio will look blue and black for everyone. But the picture is the illusion. Basically, the artificial lighting in the picture is blueish, so it's tricking your brain into interpreting the colours as if it's in natural light - and your brain thinks it's therefore white and gold.

It's kinda purple and grey. It only looks blue/black or white/gold because we humans use context clues from the surroundings to interpret the lighting. Some people get the context clues wrong and see gold/white.

And while the 'blue'/'white' color is a bit grey/bluish, it's at the very light spectrum #7e8cbb and #828495 are average examples. The blue white debate, I understand. What I do not understand, is the gold/black debate; sampling these colors gets brown/orange/mustard/taupe colors. Colors like #64574b and #534135. I'm puzzled why anyone would perceive these colors as 'black'. But what kept me wondering the most over time, is what kind of crap camera was it that took this picture. How could the colors be so off that it would even be debatable? (And how I wish youtube would not represent hex colors as hashtags).

My brain thinks the dress is darker than what I'm actually seeing so it interprets it as blue/black even though I know that's not what my eyes are seeing. KZbin is pretty terrible with sharing links, but if you google 'blue black dress theyenews' there's an article with a diagram that might clarify the two points of view by showing different lighting interpretations.
